  • Common Practice Period Harmony

Common Practice Period (CPP) refers to classical European music from roughly the 17th to late 19thcenturies

The basis of harmonic movement is the idea of functional harmony

Each chord in a given key has tendencies of resolution, and chord progressions follow a cycle of tension and release

Necessitates existence of a tonic pitch

  • Functional Harmony

  • J.S. Bach Komm, ser Tod

  • The 20th Century and 12-Tone Music

20th Century events such as World War I, economic depressions, etc. contributed to a rejection of CPP music

The German-lead style of 12-Tone composition was based around permutations of a tone row using mathematical operations

  • Arnold Schnberg Am Scheideweg

  • Observations from Contemporary Music

The style of contemporary choral music analyzed in this research usually revolves around a diatonic pitch collection used in a nonfunctional, pandiatonic way

Pitches belonging to a diatonic scale are used without adhering to classical resolution and voice leading rules

Harmonic movement and voicings are inspired by jazz and pop music

Strong focus on predominant harmonies and quasi-modal structures, as well as diatonic clusters

    Common Practice Period

    Diatonic pitch collectionFunctional harmony

    Serialist/Atonal

Chromatic pitch collectionIf harmony exists, it is nonfunctional

    Contemporary, Neo-Impressionist

Pandiatonic pitch collectionNonfunctional harmony as the

    forefront of texture
