The above insert comes from the state website explaining the difference between TOPS University Diploma and Jumpstart Diploma. All Freshman entering high school in 2014-2015 and beyond must choose between two high school diploma tracks:

1. TOPS University Diploma: prepares students for a 4 year university and is aligned with the TOPS curriculum.

2. Jumpstart Diploma: prepares students for a community college, technical school, or the workforce.

a. All students working on the Jumpstart Diploma curriculum must also complete a Job Specialty passing 9 classes in a certain area AND

b. All students must obtain an IBC which is an Industry Based Certification in which ever Job Specialty the student and parent chooses.

All students entering in high school in the 2014-2015 must choose which diploma track he/she will follow, and it must be approved by parents on scheduling sheets.

The Louisiana State Department of EducationGraduation Pathways

Graduation options

The Louisiana High School Redesign Commission has adopted the following graduation options.

The TOPS University Diploma is designed for students who plan to enter a four-year college or university upon graduation from high school. Students selecting the TOPS University Pathway will continue to pursue core academic credits that mirror the TOPS Core curriculum. Among students’ core course credits, students may pursue CLEP or dual enrollment credits where available. Students graduating on the TOPS University Pathway may also complete Jump Start courses as electives.

The Jump Start TOPS Tech Diploma is designed for students who plan to enter a community college, a technical school, or the workforce upon graduation from high school. Students pursuing the Jump Start TOPS Tech Pathway may earn basic or advanced credentials in statewide or regional career areas or equivalent credentials earned through dual enrollment coursework. Students graduating with a Jump Start TOPS Tech Career Diploma will be required to attain Jump Start statewide or regional credentials. Through elective coursework, students may also earn the TOPS University credential. If this pathway is selected, the student and his/her parent or guardian must meet with the Professional School Counselor to discuss the student’s options. This meeting can be held as early as the student’s first year of high school. Both the student and parent(s) must sign the Jump Start Participation Form. The principal signifies approval of the request with his/her signature.

For Scheduling, Please make all course selections very carefully. Students will be held accountable for choices once schedules are completed. Schedules changes will only be made at the discretion of administration during the first week of the year, and these changes will only be granted in rare circumstances. Contact your Guidance Counselor before the end of May to change your schedule requests.

The tables on the following pages show the course requirements for TOPS University Diploma and Jump Start TOPS Tech Diploma.

Students on probation will be re-evaluated after a semester by a conference of teachers, administration and parents. If the student has not demonstrated improvement during this time, he or she will not be allowed to complete the LHS Honors Program. A student is only allowed one probationary period.

Guidelines for Ranking Honors Program Students

for Graduation Only students who successfully complete the Honors Program will be eligible to

compete for Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Master or Mistress of Ceremony, and Distinguished graduates. Stoles are presented to all Distinguished graduates.

Students who complete the Honors Program with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 unweighted or better will be recognized at graduation as the Distinguished Graduates of the class

Page 21: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

and will sit on the first row for the graduation ceremony according to their respective weighted GPAs.

For graduation purposes only starting with the Graduating Class of 2018 and beyond, grade point averages will be weighted according to the amount of Honors and Advanced Placement (not including English GT) classes for each student that finishes with at least a 3.5 GPA or above unweighted in the honors program. This will determine seating order for graduation.

Graduation Recognition for the Honors Graduates for

the Class of 2018 and Beyond

Graduates who successfully complete the Honors Program will be recognized at the graduation ceremony.

Cumulative grade point averages (CGPA) for all students are calculated on a four point scale using final averages.

Weighted grade point averages (WGPA) will be calculated on Honors Program students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher only. This will determine the order that they sit on the first row.

A maximum of 22 Honors credits can be used to determine the weighted GPA.

o Step 1: Determine the difficulty factor (DF)

( AP Courses x 1.35) + (Honors x 1.25) + (Minimum # of credits required – Honors credits taken) Minimum # of credits required

Step 2: Determine the weighted grade point average (WGPA)

Multiply the student’s cumulative GPA by the difficulty factor. (CGPA x DF = WGPA)

Graduates who have a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better and are in the Honors program will be designated as Distinguished Graduates.

o Distinguished Grads will be seated in order according to their respective weighted grade point averages (WGPA) on the first row and will be recognized individually.

Honor graduates that have below a 3.5 CGPA will be seated behind the first row according to their respective CGPAs.

Page 22: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

Valedictorian Requirements Valedictorian(s) will be the Honors program graduate(s) with the highest

weighted grade point average. The valedictorian(s) will give the commencement address.

For graduation purposes only starting with the Graduating Class of 2022 and beyond: In the event of a tie for Valedictorian, the student will be determined by the individual term grades instead of the final grades. The Salutatorian will be the Honors Program graduate with the second highest individual term grades.

The valedictorian (s) for the graduating class of 2024 and beyond will be the Honor Graduates with the highest weighted GPA*. In the event of a tie for valedictorian, the student will be determined by the individual term grades instead of the final grades. The salutatorian will be the honor program graduate with the second highest individual term grade. No salutatorian will be named if co-valedictorians are designated. In addition, a composite of a 25 on the ACT must be achieved by February of their senior year in order to be considered for the distinction.

Honors Program Extras:1. Grading scale for honors courses:

100 – 90 = A 89 – 83 = B 82 – 75 = C 74 – 70 = D

2. Only honor courses taken on campus at an accredited high school in which you are a full-time student during the regular school term will be counted for the honors program. Honors level Carnegie unit courses for high school credit taken at the eighth grade level can be counted towards the Honor’s Program requirements provided the student still meets the minimum required honors courses at each grade level.

3. Homebound students and alternative school students who cannot fulfill all of the requirements of the Honors Program because of curriculum requirements will be ineligible to participate in the Honors Program.

Individual Graduation Plan Requirements

Act 257 of the 2009 Louisiana LegislatureBy the end of the 8th grade, each student shall develop, with the input of his/her family, an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP). The purposes of the IGP document and related activities are as follows:

Explore educational and career possibilities Make appropriate secondary/postsecondary decisions as part of an overall career plan Plan based on the student’s talents and interests Consider graduation requirements relevant to the student’s career pathway and postsecondary entrance

requirements

Students will update their IGPs each year. Updated IGPs will be sent home for approval and students and parents will be asked to sign the plan. IGPs will be used to schedule classes for students for every year until graduation. Each student must choose either Jumpstart Career Diploma or TOPS University Diploma curriculum. If the student chooses Jumpstart Career Diploma, then he/she must also choose a Job specialty to complete.

Summer SchoolThe purpose of summer school is to enable students to make up subjects failed. The subjects offered are

determined by student requests. To obtain credit for a summer school course, the student must be enrolled in an accredited summer school program and must successfully complete the requirements of the course. All courses available through Iberia parish summer school are computer based except for Algebra I. Algebra I is the only summer school course taught face to face. The student is responsible for the summer school fee.

If a student intends to attend a summer school program which is not sponsored by the Iberia Parish School System, the student must submit documentation concerning the accreditation of that summer school program to the principal prior to entering that program. The principal determines whether the student will receive credit for the course.

Partial-Day StudentsSeniors are the only students allowed to leave school early or enter school late. Students are responsible for their

own transportation and will not be allowed to use the telephone to call for rides. Failure to leave the campus after your final class period will result in disciplinary action and possible re-scheduling into four classes. See your school counselor for more information. A half a day sheet must completed by the student and the parent to have permission for partial days.

Page 29: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

Assessment Recovery

If a student scores either a “D” or “F” on a summative (major) assessment, the student qualifies for assessment/test recovery.  In order to take advantage of the program, students

must adhere to all criteria set forth through the Iberia Parish recovery policy, including:1. The opportunity is offered to all students scoring below 75% on any assessment.

2. Students who refuse to take a test, cheat on a test, leave a test more than 75% blank, or do not put forth effort as sufficiently documented by the classroom teacher are not eligible for test recovery.

3. Students who score below 35% on an assessment will need teacher permission to participate in recovery opportunities.

4. Remediation is required before students may attempt assessment recovery.

5. The highest re-score that can be attained through assessment recovery is a 75% C.

6. Students are only allowed one (1) recovery opportunity for each summative assessment.

7. IBC assessments follow their own industry-based requirements and regulations for recovery.

8. Dual enrollment courses are governed by the crediting university.  These courses follow university guidelines and are not eligible for assessment recovery.

Additionally, the remediation and assessment must take place within the period of seven (7) school days in which the make-up center is open.  For students enrolled in an Honors course, only two (2) assessment recoveries may occur per course per grading period.

Grading Period Recovery

If you failed a grading period, you can participate in Grading Period Recovery. Grading Period Recovery allows you to redo the grading period you failed (in Edgenuity – online) and earn up to a 75C.  You must enroll within one week after the report card has been distributed, and you must complete the work and take the test before the end of that grading period.  For example, if you failed the 1st grading period, you MUST enroll in Grading Period Recovery in the first week of the 2nd grading period AND complete all assignments and assessments before the end of the 2nd grading period. *Not all courses are available in Edgenuity; therefore, not all courses offer Grading Period Recovery.*

Contact your guidance counselor to enroll.

Page 30: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

Credit Recovery

Credit recovery is an instructional program for students who have failed core courses taken previously.  Credit recovery courses are taught using the computer software program Edgenuity.  To recover credit, the student must pass a comprehensive final exam and LEAP, if applicable. When using the Credit Recovery option, the original failure remains on the transcript, and the new passing grade is entered as a separate line (as if this is the second time a student has taken the course). The highest grade you can earn for the course is a C.  *Not all courses are available in Edgenuity; therefore, not all courses offer Credit Recovery.*

Once a student has been enrolled in a credit recovery course for over a year and has not completed it, the student will be enrolled in the course face-to-face the following school year.

*A student athlete interested in a Division I or II University MUST repeat the required courses in their entirety to fulfill the NCAA requirements.  Students cannot simply repeat the deficient skills of a required course they fail.  In other words, they cannot use the credit recovery option for promotion of subjects failed.  It will not meet the NCAA requirement for that course.*

The use of Edgenuity for initial credit is barred per Iberia Parish School Board policy.  Edgenuity can only be accessed for credit recovery/grading period recovery for students enrolled in traditional classes at Loreauville High School.  It cannot be offered to on-track students when the course is offered face-to-face and can be scheduled as part of the regular school day.  The only exception is for students who are behind their graduation or age cohort and who are attempting to earn the required credits to graduate on time.  Acceleration for students attempting to graduate with their age cohort should be reserved for students who enter high school two or more years behind their age cohorts.

Iberia Virtual Program

IVP is an option to traditional public school, where students access standards-based courses monitored by highly-qualified/certified instructors through an online format. Students desiring to participate in IVP must complete the application process from the local middle or high school which they are zoned to attend.

Industry-based certificationAn Industry-Based Certification is tangible evidence that an individual has successfully

demonstrated skill competencies in a specific set of work-related tasks, single occupations area, or a cluster of related occupational areas. An IBC is recognized in the workforce community. See your school counselor for more information. In order to graduate with a Jump Start Diploma, all students must obtain an IBC in their Job Specialty.

Dual EnrollmentDual Enrollment is the simultaneous enrollment of a student at both high school and college in which the student receives credit on both their high school and college transcripts for the same course.  Students enrolled in a college course follow the college curriculum.  Candidates must meet the following criteria to enroll in a Dual Enrollment course:  18 in English on ACT, 19 in Math, with a 19 composite, as well as a GPA of a 2.5.  For students with no ACT score, the Pre-ACT can be substituted.  If an ACT is present, the Pre-ACT does not qualify.  Once enrolled, students must adhere to all University policies and do not have access to Iberia Parish’s recovery programs.

There is a cost of tuition for each course.   Iberia Parish will fund one Math or one English course for all enrolled students.  Additional courses are the financial responsibility of students and their parents.  Students will not be allowed to enroll in a course for which they have not paid, as per the Dual Enrollment contract.  A dual enrollment course will follow a semester long format with high school credit being dually awarded at the completion of a single semester.  Additionally, students will have to adhere to each universities’ enrollment policy.  Each Dual Enrollment course must be taught by a university approved instructor.  If the instructor becomes no longer available, the course can no longer be offered through Dual Enrollment.

The following courses are currently approved for Dual Enrollment at Loreauville High School:

Fall Only (August-December) Spring Only (January-May)

English 1001 (English IV credit) English 2000

Math 1021 (College Algebra) Math 1022 (Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus)

Grades earned through the post-secondary institution are recorded on the post-secondary transcript and will follow that student throughout their post-secondary education. NOTE: Grades earned will affect GPA, scholarships, and TOPS.

The following grading scale will be used to assign High School DE grades:  A = 100 – 90      B = 89 – 83      C = 82 – 75      D = 74 – 70      F = 69 – 0

The following grading scale will be used to assign Post-Secondary grades:  A = 100 – 90      B = 89 – 80      C = 79 – 70      D = 69 – 60      F = 59 – 0

The high school grade earned in the course may be determined in the same manner as the grade earned at the university.

If a student elected to only enroll in the first or second semester of the course, the student will be enrolled in a Study Hall class for non-credit in the available semester.  Seniors are the only students allowed to utilize partial day.

GraduationFull participation in the graduation ceremony at Loreauville High School is a privilege and not a right for the individual student and his/her parents. Therefore, the privilege of graduating with one’s class on graduation night is governed by the following principles:

1. Successful completion of the course of studies and testing required by the State and Iberia Parish.

2. Certification by Loreauville High School’s administrators as having followed the rules and regulations of the school to such a degree that the student earned the privilege of being an active participant in the graduation ceremony. These rules and regulations specifically include the section on suspension and expulsion found in the student handbook.

3. However, other breaches of rules and regulations may be considered by the administration before bestowing on the student the privilege of being able to participate in the graduation ceremony. These decisions are made by LHS administration.

Students who fail to pass the required components of the LEAP Examsmay not participate in the graduation ceremony.

Cumulative Grade Point AverageCumulative grade point average is calculated on a 4-point scale.Final averages are used with quality points assigned as follows:

1-Credit Course

A = 4 quality points B = 3 quality points C = 2 quality points D = 1 quality point

Quality points for ½ credit, 2 credit, and 3 credit courses are adjusted according to the value of the course credit.

All credits attempted will be included for cumulative grade point average (CGPA) purposes.

Rank in Class: Rank in class is based upon un-weighted cumulative grade point average of the final grade in each class. The GPA on your transcript determines your rank.

Weighted GPAs determine seating for the Distinguished Graduates during the graduation ceremony on the first row for the Graduating class of 2018 and beyond.

Page 35: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

Be sure that the level of the course fits your abilities and you meet all requirements and prerequisites.

Student schedules will be determined according to IGPs (Schedule Sheet) and Jump Start Job Specialty!!! Students will be held accountable for choices once schedules are completed. Schedules will not be changed after the first week of a new year unless the change is approved by the Principal. Contact your School Counselor before the end of May to turn in your Schedule Sheet signed by parents.

Schedules will NOT be changed without parental approval!!!!!!!

Students may not receive credit for the same course twice.

A Jump Start Job Specialty must be completed in order to be allowed to graduate with a High School Diploma in the Jump Start curriculum.

In order for a student complete a Jump Start Job Specialty, the student must take 9 classes in one specialty and will have to take some classes at IPCC AND the student must obtain an Industry Based Certification in a Job Specialty.

NCAA Eligibility

Any student-athlete who plans to attend a college and play a sport must meet NCAA eligibility requirements. This applies to scholarship and non-scholarship athletes. If you have any questions, please contact your coach or athletic director. For more information: www.eligibilitycenter.org or 1-877-262-1492.

Academic Requirements Graduate from high school Complete NCAA-approved courses Earn a minimum required core-course grade-point average (GPA) Earn a required SAT or ACT sum score In reference to Credit Recovery Courses, a student athlete interested in a Division I or II University MUST

repeat the required courses in their entirety to fulfill the NCAA requirements.  Students cannot simply repeat the deficient skills of a required course they fail.  In other words, they cannot use the credit recovery option for promotion of subjects failed.  It will not meet the NCAA requirement for that course.

DIVISION I

16 Core Courses:4 years of English3 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher)2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab if offered by high school)1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science2 years of social science4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language or non-doctrinal religion/philosophy)

DIVISION II

Division I

From the time the student-athlete enters the ninth grade, he or she has four (4) years or eight (8) semesters to complete the core-course requirement. If the student-athlete fails to complete high school “on time” in eight semesters, core courses taken after the eighth semester will not be counted toward his or her NCAA academic-eligibility requirements.

“On time” also means that if the student-athlete’s high school graduation takes place May 13, 2014, he or she must graduate in May. If the student-athlete does not graduate May 13, 2014 with the rest of his or her high school class, the student-athlete has not completed his or her requirements “on time.”

Division II

Page 46: NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL€¦  · Web viewGRADE CLASSIFICATION AND LEAP 2025 23. IGP, CREDIT RECOVERY, GRADE RECOVERY, ... All students will be registered in the online program

A student-athlete is permitted to use all core courses completed from his or her ninth grade until the time he

or she enrolls full-time at a college or university.

NCAA Eligibility

Core-Course GPA and Test ScoresDivision I

Earn a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches the core-course GPA and test-score sliding scale. For example, a 2.400 core-course GPA needs a 71 combined ACT score.

Division II

Earn a 2.000 GPA or better in the core courses. Earn a combined SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68.

Taking the ACT and/or SAT

Be sure to enter “9999” code when registering for the ACT or SAT. This requests for your official test score to be sent directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Test scores on high school transcripts will not be used.
