One of the first tasks of the new term will be to ratify and adopt the Chapter Bylaws. The draft document will be circulated electronically to members and placed on the agenda for the first regular business meeting. The strategic theme for the year will borrow unapologetically from the IABC membership document - Credibility. Influence. Success. The Bylaws and the Code of Ethics are two of the main documents that will reinforce the credibility of our organization, lead to influence in our community and contribute to the success of our members.

FrOM ThE PrESIDENT

Dr. Sharon Marshall

My wish is that you take full advantage of everything on offer at the local, regional and international levels.

I am excited by the prospect of the year ahead; I am certain that it’s going to be a great year.

Colleagues,

I wish to begin my first address to you as president of the chapter by thanking you for the confidence which you have reposed in me by electing me to the presidency of IABC Barbados, to serve you for the 2012-13 term.

For the past two years, I have served as Vice President Membership and Marketing, and I believe this board experience has equipped me to take on the challenge of executive leadership.

As president, I will serve as the chief executive officer of IABC Barbados and exercise general supervision over executive affairs of the chapter. I hope to build on the foundation laid by Christal McIntosh, our founding president, and Pamala Proverbs, our immediate past president. I thank them both for the excellent contributions which they have made to securing appropriate recognition for the profession in Barbados.

I think that we have come a long way since the pioneering years of the chapter, but we still have some distance to travel before we can be satisfied that we have accomplised all of the goals which we have set for ourselves.

You have also chosen an excellent executive board, which is already up and working for you. Even though we are still to have our strategic retreat (that’s scheduled for July 21), we’ve started bonding as a team, and there is already a strong spirit of collaboration among us.

The other part of the equation is you. As I said at the Annual General Meeting, you’ll get as much out of your IABC membership as you are willing to put in.

We’re creating an opportunity for all of our members to get involved in some way in the running of the chapter’s activities. We’re establishing four sub-committees to manage four main areas of our work - Membership, Finance, Marketing and Communication, and Professional Development.

IABC is a wonderful professional resource for interested business communicators around the globe. Among the resources on offer are webinars, conferences, books, research findings, and networking opportunities.

YEAR IN REvIEW2011-12 was a very good year Highlights:

* Three excellent professional development seminars with Andre Bello, Toney Olton and Richard Dick.

* Two board members atended the Leadership Institute in Miami in February. * Schools Outreach Programme was well received, with presentations to the Foundation School and The St. Michael School. * Presentation on communications to the Parish Ambassadors.

* Webinar on how seventeen-year-olds are driving organizations to pioneer new social interactivity techniques. This was sponsored by CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.

* Five members attended the 2012 World Conference in Chicago.

(l-r) Wanda Mayers, Sophia Cambridge, Pamala Proverbs, Janice Sutton and Sharon Marshall took advantage of the sessions at World Conference 2012.

The 2012 IABC World Conference was held at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel and Towers from June 23-27. It offered sessions in seven tracks - Strategic Leadership, Career Builder, Reputation & Brand, Employee & Change Communication, Media & Public Relations, Marketing & Business and Global Trends. More than 1400 communicators from around the world converged on the Windy City for this event. Among them were five members of IABC Barbados - Wanda Mayers, Sophia Cambridge, Pamala Proverbs, Janice Sutton and Sharon Marshall.

Networking

Dining Out

Gold Quill Awards Gala Dinner

On Dine-Around night, the host chapter’s hospitality committee recommends great local restaurants for conference attendees to get together with each other and network.

On this night, the Barbados delegation made their own dinner arrangements.

They even managed to include two of Sharon’s relatives who live in Chicago.

The Gold Quill is the IABC gold standard of recognition for excellence in communication.

Each year the awards are presented at a gala dinner during the World Conference. Communicators from around the world are recognised by their peers.

We hope that some day soon someone from the Barbados chapter will be walking on stage to collect their award and bring glory to the chapter.

Southern Region Reception

The World Conference provides many opportunities to meet and share experiences with fellow communicators.

It’s also a chance for the different IABC regions to build closer bonds with the members who are part of their region.

The Southern Region, of which the Barbados chapter is a part, hosted a reception for conference participants from the region.

It was an opportunity to socialise, network and make new friends.

The event was hosted at a pub away from the conference hotel, so it also gave participants a chance to stretch their legs and see something of Chicago other than the conference meeting rooms and their individual hotel rooms.

It’s clear from these photographs to the left that the Barbados delegation had a ball at the D4 Irish Pub & Cafe.

It was a welcome, relaxing break from scurrying to get to meeting rooms in time for the start of seminars and general sessions.

Start Planning to Attend

IABC WORLD conference 2013 will be held in New York, June 23-27.

The new president has set a target of a 100% increase in the size of the Barbados delegation. Five went this year, so that means 10 next year.

As the outgoing president said in her address at the AGM, business communicators should be prepared to invest in their own professional development.

If your employer can’t, or won’t, finance your attendance, you should give serious consideration to funding it yourself.

GETTING THERE

Here are some ideas to make it affordable to attend:

* start saving now - a little at a time will eventually add up to a lot.

* register early - February, early early bird rates. May, early bird rates.

* try to find sponsorship.

* use your airline miles for the trip.

* share ground transportation.

* share a hotel room.

* stay with friends or relatives.

* buy one less pair of shoes.

* eat out less.

Winning WandaOne IABC Barbados member who already has her registration for next year taken care of is Wanda Mayers, Manager - Marketing, Communications & Research at Insurance Corporation of Barbados Ltd.She was the lucky winner of the end-of-conference draw for a free conference registration.Like the lottery people say “If you don’t have a ticket, you don’t have a chance.”

Wanda Mayers

Wanda visited the Exhibition Hall and got her card stamped by the exhibitors, and the put it in the jar with those of other hopefuls.Not bad for a first-time conference attendee. Congratulations, Wanda!

Have you always wanted to be an accredited business communicator?

Accreditation is IABC’s professional credential program recognizing communicators who have reached a globally accepted standard of knowledge and proficiency in their chosen field. Candidates meeting the

requirements of the programme earn the designation Accredited Business Communicator (ABC).

Now is the time to take the

accreditation leap and receive a scholarship from your regional board of directors in the process.

The Southern Region of IABC

wants to recruit new ABCs in its region and is now offering Accreditation Scholarships to its members!

The 2012/2013 Southern Regional

Accreditation Scholarship will cover half of a member’s application fee

once the member has earned accreditation.

If you are a current candidate

or prospective candidate for accreditation, and a member of a Southern Region Chapter, please contact Paul Lindsley, ABC, Southern Region accreditation coordinator, for more information about these scholarships . You can reach him at: [email protected].
