New Horizons Group NEWSLETTER (QPM/ MNL-01, Vol. II Issue 12) | Foundation Day Special Edition, 10 th February 2017 Developmental Pediatrician Dr. Samir Dalwai (MD, DNB, DCH, FCPS, DNB and LLB) founded New Horizons Child Development Centre (NHCDC now NHD) in 2003. NHD has developed 5 centres and currently houses a team of more than 60 paramedical professionals. NHD provides multi-disciplinary services to more than 300 children daily with a ratio of one specialist to one child in each intervention session. New Horizons Health & Research Foundation (NHHRF now NHF), is a registered non-profit organization [Reg.No.U85100MH2012NPL2385 6; No.DIT(E)/80G/111/N/2014-15], which works in the areas of health, impairment and early childhood development. NHF follows a four-pronged approach: Research, Rehabilitation, Advocacy and Training. Established in 2014, New Horizons Institute of Education & Research (NHIER now NHI) is the educational wing of NHG. In May, 2015, TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (TISS), Mumbai and NHF entered a collaboration and offer diploma courses in Special Education and Rehabilitation Psychology. New Horizons Education and Training Solutions (NHETS now NHS) provides highly specialized solutions to schools in Mumbai. Our specialists are deputed at the school on a customized basis for conducting evaluation, intervention and counseling for children with academic, emotional and behavioural concerns. Dr. Waheeda Pagarkar started the New Horizons Audiology (NHA) and Hearing Aid Centre for Adults and Children in August 2014. In its first year, NHA has seen around 400 patients, out of which 20 were adults and the remaining 380 were children. 35 patients were diagnosed with hearing loss of varying type and degree while 10 were prescribed with hearing aids. GARDA, GENERAL MANAGER, NEW HORIZONS GROUP In the last five decades, after attaining adulthood, whenever and wherever I met people who made a big or even a small but significant difference, I found them to be Creative Leaders, with the two most requisite attributes of Dream and Determination. Such leaders, I found, do useful work with a determination to consistently chase their dreams. One such person whom I had met some years ago is a dazzling individual and a Developmental Pediatrician by profession, Dr. Samir H. Dalwai, with the invincible idea that, "Every Child Can Do Better", and on an infinite mission with his team of 105 associates to “enable but never ever label" children who consult him for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disorders and other neurodevelopmental concerns. I found in Dr. Samir Dalwai an infinite capacity to stay on-course with Determination and Purpose to focus on the inclusion of ALL children. Along the way, we all tend to get distracted when things appear desolate and bleak. But the gentleman doctor under discussion always hopes to see a fresh seed sprout magically - changing the landscape of Developmental Pediatrics in India. Let's all come out in full strength to support the noble mission of a visionary Indian doctor. Sincere thanks to all team members for making the 1st Annual Conference a successful event! New Horizons Group is proud and happy that five of our graduates, Ms. Tressy Renji, Ms. Sabani Sarkar, Ms. Jemima Jacob, Ms. Nirzari Pathak and Ms. Pratibha Arekar are currently working at New Horizons, completing a full circle, giving their knowledge back to children and living the New Horizons philosophy, Every Child Can Do Better! The year-on-year increase in the number of keen members joining NHI’s programs is a sign of the community’s confidence in the clinically strong programs offered by NHI, as envisioned by Dr. Samir Dalwai, Founder Director, New Horizons Group. Led by an experienced academician, Ms. Sandhya Kulkarni, Associate Director, NHG and Chairman, NHI, all the NHI faculty members, being practitioners in their elds, truly teach from their hearts and not from books! New Horizons Education and Training Solutions (NHS) since its inception in 2009 has evolved, expanded and grown to meet the 21st century’s ever-changing needs and demands seen in schools. Deeply rooted in NHG’s core values, each member of Team NHS is committed to ‘Enable’ rather than ‘Label’ children because ‘Every Child Can Do Better!’ Year 2016 saw NHS add another school under their care. Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Samir Dalwai, our School Based Intervention Program has its services in schools in Mumbai to look after children’s emotional health and development of academic skills. NHS began a new effective Remedial Education Model for schools to meet the needs of the varied learning profiles of children in schools. Team NHS successfully conducted numerous enrichment workshops in schools in Mumbai and in neighbouring states. A special program, the Classroom Observation Consultancy Program was initiated. An NHS team member observed a child in a natural school setting and provided immediate solutions to schools. NHS conducted an Activity Week that reached out to children from a disadvantaged socio-economic environment. Focused on developing academic skills in reading, comprehension, Math and writing, NHS was able to impart knowledge to this population through fun filled activities. Team NHS: Sohini Chatterjee, Dr. Nayana Shirke, Lopamudra Dutta, Pritha Saha, Nirzari Pathak and Vipra Trivedi. New Horizons Audiology Centre (NHA) completed 2 successful years in August, 2016. In this term, NHA provided services to more than 1000 children and adults together under the experienced leadership of Dr. Waheeda Pagarkar, Consultant in Audiovestibular Medicine, UK. An article was published by Dr. Waheeda Pagarkar with her multi-disciplinary team on links between impaired hearing and attention problems and ‘Why Hearing Screening is Important’ in the Hindustan Times, Mumbai, dated May 04, 2016. This year New Horizons Audiology Centre aimed to raise awareness about hearing screening and make it accessible to all age groups. Our first Hearing Screening Camp arranged in July, 2016 was successful in reaching out to people working in corporate settings and resolve their hearing concerns. Second successful Hearing Screening Camp was organized during the World Disability Awareness Week on 3rd December, 2016, where free hearing screening and hearing aids were provided to children, adults and geriatric group. All candidates underwent full diagnostic test and were provided with best hearing aids. Candidates were called for follow-ups where the candidates gave overwhelmingly positive response with the use of hearing aids. At the National Conference of Developmental Pediatrics, NCDP-EMBICON, 2016, NHA conducted a pre-conference workshop on ‘Pediatric Audiology and Speech Disorders’ in October, 2016. The speakers were Dr. Milind Kirtane, Dr. Abraham Paul, Dr. Waheeda Pagarkar, Dr. Samir Dalwai, Sohini Chatterjee and Yasha Shetty. The workshop ended with a tour to the audiological evaluation room and a hands-on training on hearing evaluation equipment. NHA shared its learning with the students of TISS-NHI’s ‘Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education’ for better understanding of children with hearing impairment. A demonstration class was conducted to orient them about hearing assessments equipment by our Audiologist. NHA’s Facebook page also raised awareness on public platforms through the ‘Hear Me Out’ FAQ series where relevant questions by parents were answered along with emphasis on why Hearing Screening in the early days of life is important. Information was also shared through videos and print information which can be viewed by all on NHA’s public platforms. Team NHA looks forward to continuing this journey in the coming years and providing service to as many children and adults as possible to “Hear Well and Speak Well”. Lisa Corricello-McDowell, parent of Liam McDowell, Goregaon (East) Centre: I recently spoke with Dr. Samir about how wonderful Liam is doing, and wanted to update you all. Without your hard work and support, I truly believe my son would have languished or become worse. He is now fully included in a public school here in Oregon, USA, with his peers. He receives pull-out support in his academics. Next year, he will be receiving his academics with his peers with the support of a small group and assistant. He will be pulled out for extra support. He has reached all his academic goals and is at grade level in all areas, with the exception of fine motor writing. He will enter the 4th grade next year. He participates in extracurricular activities: swimming, Tae Kwon Do, and gymnastics. He loves Legos, dinosaurs, the Pink Panther, and of course, his hero, Indiana Jones. He wants to be an archaeologist some day. This week he is in an intensive Lego Robotics camp with peers his own age. He no longer cries himself to sleep at night, nor has nightmares about incidents of the past. He is happy and talks about wanting to go to college because he believes he is a "smart boy, and that's what smart people do". Words cannot express how grateful I am to have found you all and for what you did for my son. I do believe your work saved a little boy. Bless you and thank you! Parent of Aanika Bagaria, Goregaon (West) Centre: After coming to New Horizons, I can say that my daughter is in the right hands. This is my 3rd month and I can see a lot of improvement in my daughter. I came here with academic concerns. She could not write answers properly and her handwriting was not legible. She faced problems with sentence formation and her level of confidence was very low. I am grateful to all the therapists who are taking my daughter’s sessions. They are all very friendly and supportive. With their therapies and the time and effort that they have put in, I see a lot of improvement in Aanika. Her class teacher reported that Aanika attempted 95% of the question paper within the given time frame with very few spelling mistakes, and in good handwriting. I will definitely recommend New Horizons Child Development Centre to my friends and other parents. Divvya Hariharan, parent of Vihaan Naganathan, Santa Cruz Centre: Vihaan was brought in for evaluation at 13 months of age. Being a premature baby, Vihaan had milestones to achieve which he was lagging behind on, mainly his gross motor skills, as well as fine motor skills. The therapists at the Santa Cruz branch have been absolutely wonderful in shaping Vihaan up. They have been patient and persistent with him through his sessions to achieve his quarterly/ half yearly goals set. Vihaan enjoys coming to the centre. His sessions have been designed in a fun manner keeping the objective in mind. He loves his therapists. We see tremendous progress in Vihaan's development. The centre is very proactive with communication with parents on various aspects of the child and are available at all times in case of any queries. We as parents are very thankful to the centre for handling our child with affection and helping us out with our child's development. Jyotsna Sonawane, parent of Aryaman Sonawane, Bhandup Centre: We came to New Horizons Child Development Centre in January, 2015 when Aryaman was 3 years old with no speech. After visiting many other places, we came here and met Dr. Samir Dalwai. NHD’s approach is very good. Plus point was many different therapists treated Aryaman, helping him develop his communication skills. Counseling for parents is very useful as we cannot talk about everything in 45 minutes. So, we can clear our doubts in this counseling session. If we want 100% result in our children, Counseling is important to work on child’s behavior. Medications are handled by Dr. Dalwai regularly which is beneficial. Important message which I want to give from my experience at NHD is to keep patience. All children are normal. But sometimes slow. Also, take your child out, engage them in Group Therapy, as they say. Saroj Soni, mother of Aradhya Soni, Dadar Centre: First of all I would like to start with a ton of thanks to Dr. Samir Dalwai and his team. Especially Zeenal Ma’am, Falguni Ma’am, Sanjana Ma’am, Devangee Ma’am, Shruti Ma’am, Radha Ma’am and not to forget Shradhha Ma’am and Bhumi Ma’am. Because of the team effort I as a mother of a son who had many problems, which I did not know how to tackle, dealt with it. The process took time but was worth it. And I am completely satisfied with things that my kid is doing and hope that in the future also, he will benefit from it. Dr. Samir’s treatment is really miraculous and I will really be obliged all of my life for the things that he has done for us. The day I joined New Horizons was a turning point in my life. To be with children and to help them grow has always been my deepest desire and I could not have asked for a better platform than New Horizons. This poem is my way of expressing my heartfelt gratitude towards God for giving me this opportunity and to everybody at New Horizons for working towards the improvement of each and every child. This poem is for all those little angels whom I get to meet every day. Today, I can proudly say that, I am happy that I have taken the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference!!” While walking along the lanes of life, I came across a world full of smiles. The world was different and the world was new, and my interest to explore it gradually grew. So, I started my journey in the unknown, but, in this journey I was not alone. I went ahead along with other travelers; they were equally excited as I was, on seeing the view which was spectacular. I looked here and I looked there, I was thrilled and I was amazed to nd that this world was devoid of despair! I could see there was love and there was care, and it actually moved me to tears. Then one by one, I came across different angels and I wondered if I was part of a fable! The angels were graceful and they were innocent, they welcomed me with open arms and hearts, and nally all my inhibitions were torn apart. The angels took me to show me their lives and I constantly kept wondering what it would be like. They viewed life from a different perspective and their emotions for others were neither fake nor deceptive. I wish I could be like them, so pure and so genuine, like dew drops which sparkle in bright sunshine. I never want this journey to get over and I want to move on with them forever! THE MOST POWERFUL LEADERSHIP TOOL IS YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXAMPLE – BY JIMMY B. GARDA, GENERAL MANAGER, NEW HORIZONS GROUP

In the last five decades, after attaining adulthood, whenever and wherever I met people who made a big or even a small but significant difference, I found them to be Creative Leaders, with the two most requisite attributes of Dream and Determination.

In 2003, Dr. Samir Dalwai started New Horizons Child Development Centre (NHD) in his modest clinic with one specialist, one child and one dream – “Every Child Can Do Better!” The Goregaon (East) centre was started in 2005, followed by the Santa Cruz centre in 2007, the Bhandup centre in 2008, the Dadar centre in 2013 and the Goregaon (West) centre in 2014. An individualized multi-disciplinary, time-based, documented intervention program called the New Horizons Developmental Program (NHDP) based on the accumulated experience and research of fourteen years and thousands of children is

delivered to children according to guidelines and protocols standardized across all five centres. This original, pioneering program includes mandatory parental engagement sessions on a monthly basis. Each child is re-evaluated in the sixth month of his or her intervention program, the functional goals are reviewed and the next program is started. Every week 35-40 evaluation and re-evaluation report sets are drafted by the clinical team and reviewed by a panel of clinical auditors. Each centre has a multi-disciplinary team working cohesively, with the single, collective goal of bringing a positive change in every child.

NHG and mentors at UNM, USA are now planning curriculum modules for the next online program, especially customized for Team New Horizons.

The 1st Annual Conference of NHI, in collaboration with TISS was organized on 15th January, 2017 on the topic of ‘Child Development and Neuro-developmental Disorders: A Rational Approach’. Sincere thanks to Dr. Samir Dalwai, Ms. Sandhya Kulkarni, Mr. Jimmy B. Garda, Ms. Deepti-Kanade Modak and Ms. Sohini Chatterjee for their guidance, expertise and support.

Sandhya Kulkarni, Associate Director, NHG and Chairman, NHI, all the NHI faculty members, being practitioners in their fields, truly teach from their hearts and not from books!

New Horizons Education and Training Solutions (NHS) since its inception in 2009 has evolved, expanded and grown to meet the 21st century’s ever-changing needs and demands seen in schools. Deeply rooted in NHG’s core values, each member of Team NHS is committed to ‘Enable’ rather than ‘Label’ children because ‘Every Child Can Do Better!’

Year 2016 saw NHS add another school under their care.

Lisa Corricello-McDowell, parent of Liam McDowell, Goregaon (East) Centre:I recently spoke with Dr.

This is my 3rd

month and I can see a lot of improvement in my daughter.

To be with children and to help

them grow has always been my deepest desire and I could not have asked for a better platform

than New Horizons. This poem is my way of expressing my heartfelt gratitude towards God for

giving me this opportunity and to everybody at New Horizons for working towards the

improvement of each and every child. This poem is for all those little angels whom I get to meet

every day. Today, I can proudly say that, “I am happy that I have taken the road less travelled by,

and that has made all the difference!!”

While walking along the lanes of life, I came across a world full of smiles.

The world was different and the world was new, and my interest to explore it gradually grew.

So, I started my journey in the unknown, but, in this journey I was not alone.

I went ahead along with other travelers; they were equally excited as I was,

on seeing the view which was spectacular.

I looked here and I looked there, I was thrilled and I was amazed to find that this world was devoid of despair!

I could see there was love and there was care, and it actually moved me to tears.

Then one by one, I came across different angels and I wondered if I was part of a fable!

The angels were graceful and they were innocent, they welcomed me with open arms and hearts,

and finally all my inhibitions were torn apart.

Dear Team,

2016 was a year of achievements. Together we enabled hundreds of children and their families through the New Horizons Developmental Program (NHDP). This would not have been possible without the hard work that each of you puts in every day. Each of you has contributed to New Horizons in your own special way. You have believed in the New Horizons philosophy that, “Every Child Can Do Better!” and made it your own. Thank you for your fabulous work! Look forward to working with you for many more years!
