Photos (above) are of the children we visited in the mentally challenged orphanage. Over two
hundred of them who truly enjoyed the story of Jesus. We were able to pray with them and minister to the staff. (Below) are some of the elderly who are so grateful for the hats and scarves we leave. All most all of the elderly receive Christ and confess their sins the
first time they hear about the Lord.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the Fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27
Fall 2005
Evelyn, Elya & John Shane say, Come and join us on “Hug a Kid” trip to Russia, Ukraine or Sri
Lanka.
God’ Special Children We visit many special places on our trips besides just
the orphanages. We visited a tuberculosis hospital for children where we told them about Jesus and all were so happy to see us because no one visits them.
We go to elderly homes where these folks in their wan ing years are so delighted because someone has remem bered them. We visit children’s prisons where kids who get caught are treated in such adverse ways.
My favorite orphanages are those where the mentally challenged are located. They are the most difficult for me because I simply do not understand their situa tion. At one of these men tally challenged orphanages we visited, the children’s ages ranged from about 5 through 17. There were over 200 of these special kids.
They are also special because rarely do they have
visitors. They are a forgotten group. Parents have given up hope and desert their children to a life of hopelessness.
The food is never as good, nor the staff as fully trained as normal orphanages, but you can always be assured that if you love these special kids you will be loved back. That truly was the case, as the kids just didn't want to let go.
When we first got there, one 17yearold boy named Sarosha just hung on to me and kept calling me Papa and Elya was mama. He told us how bad life was at this place. There is no way to know how much, if any, of what he was telling me was true, we can only pray for him. It was an extremely emotional time for Elya and myself to listen to the horror this young man was sharing with us.
We left supplies with the staff and they were so thrilled that someone actually cared about them. When I told her there were many in America who are praying for her she just cried and thanked our group for blessing them.

Across the country and even in foreign lands I have ladies who knit thousands of the above items. People ask what I do with all the items we get? We take them directly to Russia and Ukraine so they can be used by the orphans and elderly.
Siberian winters are so horribly cold and so many of the children and elderly are under clothed. We have a constant turnover of chil dren and elderly people in these facilities we still can not keep up with supplies.
The one child you see wearing a hat and scarf is
very typical of the joy expressed by such a gift to them. The other orphans I just threw in there pictures because I thought they were a cuties. Thanks for your help and as soon as you finish reading this please go back to knitting.
Fungus, Rats, Mice, Lice & Other Critters In most of the orphanages we go to these are
the critters that you will most likely find. The two girls above are a contrast to their orphanages. One girl has long and beautiful hair. The other girl had a bad case of head lice and had to have her head
shaved. Shaving the head is a common, cheap way of dealing with the problem of lice. It is a traumatic experience for a child who has no one to love and comfort her. We have seen whole orphanages with their heads shaved. Fungus is another problem that is not so easily taken care of. Once a child gets athletes foot or jock itch the whole orphanage has it. Our teams have taken in thousands of tubes of antifungal crèmes to pre vent these problems and always the orphanage directors are so happy to get the medicine.
Is It Worth It? You Be The Judge! We went to a city called Osa. It is about
a 3hour drive from Perm. There were some twenty teenagers there. We presented the Gospel and all got saved.
During the presentation of the Gospel there was a young lady 14 years old named Luda (pictured upper left) that was continu ally crying. I had an altar call and all hands were raised for salvation. Following the meeting this girl named Luda came to me and asked, “Do you remember me?” I must admit I meet thousands of orphans each year and I didn’t remember her.
Then she told her story. It seems that her parents had died of tuberculosis some years back and she also had the disease. She was placed in a tuberculosis hospital for children
some 4 or 5 years ago. One of my American teams visited that hospital. Tuberculosis hospitals are terrible places. No one visits these kids because of this dreaded disease. Luda had received the Lord at this meeting. She finally recovered from her sickness and was placed in this permanent or phanage because her extended family did not want her.
Shortly after going to her permanent orphanage she had a dream about a American group and myself coming to her orphanage. She said it was so real and she was desperate for other Christian friends.
She told us that over the last four years she had prayed daily that our team of Americans would come and tell the kids at her new orphanage about the Lord. When we finally came she was so overwhelmed with emotion she just cried and cried. It wasn’t a sad cry but one of joy. Now her whole orphan age is saved and she has many new Christian friends.
Please pray for Luda, as she will leave the orphanage soon. She is also in need of surgery for her jaw. She has a difficult time eating solid food and the doctors say they can correct this with surgery but because her surgery is not life threatening they will not do it. The cost is around $1,000.

Elya Shane’s Corner God is so good to those people who trust and love Him
with all their heart. On our last trip to Russia we visited 15 orphanages 1 children’s tuberculosis hospital and 1 elderly home. There were so many children only God knows them all. When I was an orphan I didn’t know that so many children were unwanted by their parents, but guess what, they are wanted and loved by God. I asked one girl why she was put in the orphanage and
how long she had been there? She told me her dad was in jail and her mom was a drunk and that she had been in the orphanage for 4 years and didn’t know if she would ever go back to her family. Another girl was 14. Following the program she ran to my dad and started to say some thing to him, I was the translator and didn’t expect to hear such a story. She told my dad that she dreamed about us coming and
she prayed and prayed that we would come and her dream came true. My heart was so touched. We went to my favorite baby orphanage. I could not
keep my eyes dry, I was weeping inside and out. There were some 65 babies in the orphanage and 40 plus babies and toddlers at the AIDS hospital not far from the orphan age. We held these babies and played with them. We loved all the babies and some of them cried when we put them down. We visited my old orphanage. The staff remembered
me. We brought gifts for the children. I thought about how I wished when I was an orphan how wonderful it would be if someone had brought me pencils, paper, warm has or gloves. The orphanage was so thankful. I also left them a big picture of me because they had asked that I bring one. I told them to let the picture remind them not of me but of what God did in my life. Also to remind them that all the kids are special and beautiful. God continues to show me the direction He wants me to
take in life. I will continue to go to Russia and hug kids and tell them about Jesus.
Picking Potatoes We came to this orphanage and most of the kids were digging potatoes. They get no education and must work in the fields to keep from starving because their government does not meet even basic needs for most orphans. We try to bring them last
ing joy in their hardships.
Christmas Time It is nearing the time of Christmas for us Americans. We will celebrate the birth of Christ our Savior. We will give gifts to so many that need nothing. All the kids you see in the photos and tens of thousands you don’t see will receive nothing at Christmas or any other time of the year. Maybe you could consider helping by giving a gift to New Hope Outreach Ministries (NHOM) so that we can continue blessing these who are so needful. Your gifts are all taxdeductible and when
you tell your friends that you are giving a gift to an orphan instead of them I’ll bet they won’t even mind. Certainly it is something to think about. These are just a few of the orphanages we visit. I believe that God would have us visit so many more but we honestly can not do it with out your help. We have been so blessed by your generosity in the past and want to thank you for blessing us and them. From all of us to all of you.
Merry Christmas & a Blessed New Year!
A Father’s Pride Over the years of visiting orphans with
our teams I have always been the one who would finish the program by leading the children and staff to the Lord. Our daughter Elya has traveled many thousands of miles
with us and is now in her senior year of Bible School. While we were visiting this small orphan age I yielded to my daughter and let her present Christ to the chil dren. She was not in fear but went ahead as if it were a natural thing for her to do.
I stood in awesome respect to God as I watched her lead these little ones to the Lord. What a privilege God has given us as a family to have such wonderful children. Each of my children
and grandchildren are so special to me. Elya stood tall this day. I thought so much about her history. Given up at birth, living in a Russian orphanage for 14 years, and God chose her for our family.
To see where she has come from and where she is currently at only offers hope for thousands of orphans worldwide. We are blessed to have her as part of the New Hope Outreach Ministries team. Her future looks bright, her hopes run high and most importantly her love is towards our God.

Just one of the many baby/toddler orphanages we work with. We purchased 80 potty chairs for the babies in the Perm Region recently. Needless to say all the staff was elated.
