An Open Letter to all Congregations of the Oklahoma Annual Conference
Receiving the Bishop’s Certificate of Appreciation from Bishop Robert Hayes, Jr
“Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Greetings, grace and peace in the
name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I am overwhelmed and humbled by
the number of churches in the Oklahoma Annual Conference that demonstrate
their discipleship and commitment to our “connectional” church with the
sharing of gifts through Apportionment giving.
The contributions secure the critical link that sustains important
ministries in our own Conference and around the world.” continued on page 2 Information about

Sunday Evening Class by Cali Eck
“We will be having a Sunday evening Bible
Study this summer. It will be an eight-week study
written by Rev. Cali Eck as a part of her continuing
process for ordination.”
“We will be studying the Letters to Timothy. Come
be a part of this Study. It will begin in June.”
May 25 Rev. Randy McGuire will preach at New Hope before he is
assigned to a “church of his own.”
We will miss Randy and Rhonda’s many contributions to New Hope and wish them
well in this new chapter of life. Come on the 25th to hear Randy and give them
encouragement for his new pastorate.
Numbers are important and this is a year for mile-stone numbers in my personal and professional life. On
May 14, I will have been married to my lovely wife Karrie
for 20 years! On June 8, I will have been pastor at New Hope United Methodist Church for 5 years! On July 13th,
I will turn 60 years old! Karrie and I were married at the First United
Methodist Church in Snyder, Oklahoma on May 14, 1994. Rev. Dr. Gene Miller performed the ceremony. Gene was
the pastor at Snyder/Mountain Park before I went there in
1993. Snyder is Karrie’s hometown and she sold her home to move into the parsonage with me, which was next door
to the church. Our children, Michael, Brian, Kristen, and Scott stood with us and they helped decorate our van after
the service. After the wedding, we went to eat hamburgers
at Meers in the Wichita Mountains. We did not go on our honeymoon to San Francisco until school was out.
I came to New Hope as pastor in 2009. In the five years I have served here, we have bought a bus and a van,
built a bus barn, paid off the note on the original building, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the
church in 1961, and launched into a $2 million dollar build-
ing expansion. Since 2009 New Hope has had 59 professions of
faith, received 121 members by transfer from other United
Methodist Churches, and received 37 new members from other denominations. We currently have over 470
members and last year we had a record in worship
attendance with an average of 255 in attendance each Sunday. The 2014 Easter attendance set a record with
448 in worship! I was born on July 13, 1954 in McAlester Okla-
homa, the son of Claude and Rheba Ward. Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Richard Nixon was vice-
president. John Travolta and Condoleeza Rice were also
born in the same year. Elvis Pressley started his music career in 1954 and The Tonight Show first aired on NBC
with Steve Allen as host. In the 60 years since then I have graduated from Krebs Elementary School,
McAlester High School, Oklahoma Baptist University,
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
I have pastored Baptist churches in Shawnee and Fairview and served as senior pastor at FUMC
Snyder, Sallisaw, Ponca City, Bartlesville and at New Hope in Oklahoma City. I have been in ministry in The
United Methodist Church for 22 years.
What does all this mean? Our youth would say that I am old. However, our oldest church member,
Eulis Parker, told me that I am just a kid! I really like Eulis!! I think that what it means is that God has been
good to me and that I am blessed.
I am blessed to be turning 60, I am blessed to be married to Karrie, and I am blessed to serve as
pastor to the wonderful people of New Hope! This is indeed a year for me to count my blessings and I know
I couldn’t count that high!

Reflections
from
Bishop’s letter continued from page 1 With the full sharing of your 2013
apportionments, your church has enhanced our
participation in so many areas of service. What
your church has accomplished is nothing less than
remarkable! So, on behalf of the Treasurer, the
Council on Finance and Administration, and all the
people whose lives are touched through your gifts
to the United Methodist Church and the Oklahoma
Annual Conference, we all say thank you!
Lives have been changed and disciples have been
made because you stepped out in faith, sharing,
and giving your full measure.
Enclosed with this letter is my “Bishop’s
Certificate of Appreciation,” a token of our
gratitude for your generosity. Our conference is
extremely blessed to have congregations such as
yours that enable us to fulfill our mission of
“making disciples of Jesus Christ!”
Again, thank you so much for all you do.
Your servant in Christ, Robert E. Hayes, Jr.
Bishop, Oklahoma Area,
The United Methodist Church
Helping Hands Food Pantry
The year is passing fast. May is a busy month with graduations and Mother's Day and school letting out for summer. The food pantry is seeing quite a few patrons each pantry day, usually 12-13 families per pantry day. That takes a lot of food and thanks to our congregations donations (food and money) you make it possible for us to help around 25 families each month. One group you might not be aware of is grandparents raising or babysitting their grandchildren during school breaks like summer. These grandparents are all on a fixed income so any child-friendly snacks and cereals will be appreciated. We also get clients who walk to the pantry. We are collecting reusable grocery bags with handles. The pantry is open from 1 until 3 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. We can always use canned fruit and vegetables, Kraft macaroni and cheese and assorted varieties of oatmeal. Thank you for your generosity. We appreciate your help for those less fortunate than ourselves. Sharia and Kimberly

This helps them and it helps us! Thank you so much for your
support of our mission to Nicaragua!
Warm Fuzzy Follow-up
note from EMSA
It’s just so cute when those precious little children come strolling out in single file carrying those stuffed animals (to the ambulance)!! It’s a heart melter! Please tell your congregation that on Easter two of the bears were given to twins who have special needs. Medics transported a 6-year-old boy and girl to the zoo to hunt Easter Eggs. The boy has cerebral palsy and has not been able to hunt eggs before. They love the blessed bears you’ve given to us …..still a beary good cause! Thank you for all you do for us. Lara at EMSA Thanks to Nellyne Hanlin for passing along this note to be shared!
A note from Lori Foster about the Mission Sewing
trip to Nicaragua. We could use
two-yard cuts of cotton fabric and sewing
notions if people would like to donate.
This is our fifth sewing project and
we have a full team! From New Hope,
Lauren Coffman, Emma Scott,
Andrea Reid, Elizabeth Hepner and
Lori Foster will be joining the rest of
the team from other churches.
We have been invited to go to Colombia, Cuba and
Mexico to work with the Methodist Churches there and help
them set up projects. The main focus is to help educate local
people to support the ongoing education of the students,
mostly women. The goal is to support the local church in ways
that they see as a need.
Each project is slightly different in goals and
objectives. We help them to further the ministry they
are planning or doing. We support them with finances,
education and relationships.

Thank you Lord for the blessed Easter Sunday and Season ….
Thank you Lord for the gift of grace offered through the sacrifice of
your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ…..
Thank you Lord for the beauty of spring and signs of new life as flowers grow and
grasses green….
Thank you Lord for the love and preciousness of family and friends to support in times
of sorry and to enjoy in seasons of rejoicing….
If you watch Jimmy Fallon, you may be reminded of the segment of his show in which he
writes his “thank you” notes. But this list could go on and on thanking God for our many
blessings. Why not create your own Thank You notes now!
Our thanks to Dave and Donna Reynolds for presenting the April program centered on our
Skyline Ministry bringing us up-to-date of the programs under the Skyline umbrella.
As United Methodist Women, we are encouraged to be thankful each day by using our
“Thank Offering “ container. This can be a special box, jar or other container placed in a
convenient spot and which has a “World Thank Offering” sticker on it. When we have a
special thank you to our Lord, we respond by dropping in some coins or even dollar bills.
We collect this offering all year and turn it in the during a special program. These funds
are used in the total program of missions carried on through the national office in the US
and around the world. So remember ladies, be using your container all year.
To quote a Metropolitan Library System recent Facebook post also used in our current
District newsletter Northern Lights, “I am a reader, not because I don’t have a life, but
because I choose to have many.” “The Reading Program of the United Methodist Women
is one of the easiest ways to learn, or to find out about another life.” We have available a
list of books recommended by the UMW Reading Program, several of which can be found
in our public libraries. If you would like a copy of the list, let Ann Hannah know.
This year is flying past and Fall will be here before we are ready. Because we do not have
regular meetings in June and July, our May program will be to put our collective heads
together for ideas for the Fall events and projects. This program will be the evening of
May 22, 7:00 p.m. here at the church. We welcome all ladies of the church because in the
truest sense, you are all United Methodist Women, right? Vita Crowe has been appointed
to Chair the Project Committee, and she has several creative ideas. Dates and times for
working on projects during the summer will be discussed.
Coming up in July is the Mission U which convenes on the OCU campus July 18-20, 2014.
There is a registration fee ranging from $55 - $125, depending on whether you want
housing and/or meals.
Studies will be (1) How is it with Your Soul?
(2) The Church and People with Disabilities
(3) The Roma of Europe.
September promises to become very busy. September 20 is the North District Annual
Meeting at Chapel Hill UMC. On Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10:00 AM we will host a Special
Tea . More about that later. And November 15, is the Leadership Training at Wesley UMC
in El Reno. That’s enough to be thinking about. Put the dates on your calendar now.
GOING GREEN: Recycle your paper by depositing them in the Recycle Bin on the church
parking lot, north end. This is a way to support the New Hope Youth program, too.
by Richard Foster
On Sunday, May
18th we will have
Men of Hope break-
fast at 8:15 a.m.
We will have an
election for Vice-
President. The VP
duties are to get
speakers for our
meetings and to
help where needed.
Also at this meeting
we will discuss
where we need to
go as a group within
the church
So, if you have
some ideas, please
come and speak up.
This breakfast is
for all men.
If you have come
in the past and
haven’t been in a
while, please come
on May 18th.
If you are new to
the church and you
would like to come,
please do.
We hope to see you
on May 18th.

Note to Sunday School
Classes -
In the workroom, Judy has
marked a mail box for each class.
They are in the top half of the boxes. Any mail received or communications
for a specific class will now be placed there rather than in your class roll-
books or on the tables. Thank you to
Judy for repurposing
that space!
THANK YOU to all those who worked
so hard to make our annual Garage Sale a success! We made over $2400. Many hours unloading, sorting, and selling the items went into this sale! We appreciate your help and support of New Hope Youth!
Since there have already been calls:
The annual Bazaar sponsored by
Ruth Circle will be November 1.

articles are welcome so if your group
wants to put in news, send it to Kaye by

there is still time to sign up. The cost of a ticket is $12
and includes entry to the game, a baseball cap, and a
hot dog meal at the game. The bus leaves from the
church around 6 p.m. Please contact Cali Eck at
830-4876 if you have questions.
Cali’s Corner Well, May is here and everyone seems busier than ever.
In the United Methodist Church May is considered a time to
focus on encouraging the family. Here at New Hope I trust
you will be encouraged to spend quality time with your
family. The United Methodist Board of Discipleship has set
aside May as “Christian Home Month” in an endeavor to
help us think about ways the church can help parents know
that we believe the home is key to faith formation. We want
to strengthen faith in families and celebrate with you in your
families’ faith journey. The overall theme for the month is
“Families Called to Peace”.
It is our desire to support and strengthen families in order to
create a safe and nurturing environment. We believe it is
God’s desire that we in the community of faith know peace
as the rule and not the exception. Peace is always in our
minds because we see war and violence all around us.
The absence of conflict does not necessarily mean there is
peace. As you focus on this theme this month ask yourself
these questions: How do we achieve peace? How do
we maintain a Christ-like focus when there is violence
everywhere?
Psalm 85:10 says, “Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.” Let us ask
ourselves the question, what would peace look like for your
family and our congregation in light of this verse? I want to
encourage you to spend time with your family intentionally
this month and play and pray together.
There will be ideas posted on the welcome page of the
website each week. Look for them as we strive to be
faithful in our support of you and your family.
Blessings! Cali
Summer is
just around the corner and we will again have a once-a-
month activity. We will host a seminar on Internet
Safety on Wednesday evening, June 4th. More information about Wednesday events should be
in future bulletins!
On Sunday, June1 at 2 p.m. in
Fellowship Hall Friends and Believers
SS class will host a come-and-go wedding
shower for Becca Pappas and Michael Miller.
Everyone is invited to attend.

May’s Bible Verse: You are the Christ, the Son of
the living God. Matthew 16: 16
Leap of Faith: I know that Jesus is the Son of God.
A note from Stephanie in the nursery: With my thirtieth birthday right around
the corner I want to take this time to show thanks. Thank you to the church
as a whole for helping me in more ways than one. Thanks to New Hope Staff.
They are a great bunch of people who make me happy just being around
them. Thanks to my employees and volunteers. They make my life/job
easier. Thanks to my little babes. They make my heart so happy. Thanks to
my parents for entrusting me with your angels. It’s a pleasure to watch your
babes. I enjoy every minute of it. I’m just very thankful to work and worship
with so many wonderful people and families. I adore my job and church!
You guys are awesome! Stephanie
** These dates are earlier because for us to get the early bird discount
we have to have our bill paid by those dates. Remember that if the camps
get too full they will be turning kids down. If you know that your child will be
going, go ahead and enroll them online. Please print a copy of the health
forms and give to me. Luisa or I will be going to camp with the kids, so
they will have a familiar face.
