Taking planters to a higher level
Based in Cheshire Europlanters Ltd continues to be a leading designer and manufacturer of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) planters for home, office, garden and landscape planting.
25 years of growth for Europlanters Ltd Established in 1990 Europlanters Ltd is coming up to its 25th year in the industry and what an exciting time it’s been. John Wilkes started off as a sole trader when Europlanters was established in 1990 now his team have grown into a company that employs over 25 people. We have worked especially hard to deliver consistent high quality whilst improving our site so that we can provide an even better, faster service to all customers.
In 2014 we opened a new manufacturing area which has hugely increased our production and capacity for larger bespoke items; we are continually adding to the 12,500 sq.ft. main production area, office and warehousing buildings. This has vastly extended our storage space, finishing and packing areas whilst creating a larger work space for our laminators.
The manufacturing team has grown in line with the site; with additional management, several new permanent full-time staff, and additional office staff to supplement the original team who have been with us for many years.During our growth and our internal re-organisation of the main manufacturing and warehousing buildings, we have recently installed a new 24 square metre industrial spray booth with baking facility to turn around bespoke colour options more efficiently.
Although based in the North West we ship our planters all over the country by pallet, parcel and our own transport, adding more delivery vehicles to our fleet and weekly routes into London. We supply across Europe, United States, Africa and the Middle East, with our exports increasing by 100% over the last 12 months.
As part of the company development last year we have manufactured our own fibreglass building to expand our office space and to house additional sales and admin personnel.
Our product range has grown too, we can now offer high quality fire retardant and UV stable artificial hedging and topiary, illuminated planters and our latest product ‘Root Refreshers’ – the watering system that once installed you can almost forget!
Over the past year our design team have also been busy, launching many new designs and finishes, our latest being the Berkeley, Facet, Tetragon, Flexi, Knightsbridge, Windsor, Sphere and Stadium planters plus lots of new sizes to our range of standard Troughs and Cubes.

Planter typesStainless Steel can be used outside as well as inside, it will not rust but can corrode! This is down to chemicals in the compost (e.g. fertiliser) so we recommend the use of a plastic liner or GRP. Some of the Stainless Steel Planters are already painted internally.
Galvanised Steel is ideal for Exterior Landscaping where an urban look is required, although shiny to start with these planters will dull down. This type of planter can be Powder Coated to introduce colours and special effects - the choice is endless!
Aluzinc is a galvanised steel but it does not dull with time or show ‘water’ marks. Aluzinc has a matt silver finish and used for cladding buildings will stand the test of time! Be careful though as it goes black when chaffed against almost anything! Both can be fabricated to bespoke shapes and sizes without adding prohibitive costs, they are not watertight unless sealed or GRP lined.
Steel (Zintec) is cheaper but needs to be powder coated inside and out or GRP lined. Bespoke sizes can be made and they are seamless but once scratched it will rust! To prevent rusting hot dip galvanizing is best but this adds to the cost considerably. All metals are recyclable.
GRP/Glass Reinforced Plastic, can be used for Interior and Exterior projects, it is strong, watertight and light weight. Ideal for roof gardens where access is difficult and weight saving essential. Will not be damaged by frost and readily accepts different paint finishes including metallics. Glass Fibre is not easily recyclable but will last for over 20 years! So because it does not need replacing for such a long time it is very eco friendly. Rotationally Moulded Plastic, has similar characteristics as GRP although it is tougher, the finish is dull or matt and paint will not easily stick to it. These are ideal for Terracotta or Matt Granite and Sandstone Planters. These are Eco friendly as the plastic is Recyclable and Black Planters are often made from recycled plastic..
Timber looks great in the right place, but unless hardwood, needs painting or varnishing after a couple of years. Combined with Stainless Steel it looks very contemporary. Alternatively use our GRP Wood Look panels on page 23.
N.B. All dimensions are in mm and the height is always the last dimension.

Focus on Roof GardensTaking GRP to a Higher Level
Get inspired by the different ways you can use GRP to design the perfect
roof top space. Create a rural retreat within an urban environment, where the
back drop of a city contrasts with lush greenery and allows nature to unfold,
people to unwind, relax or entertain in privacy.
Europlanters have been privileged to be the chosen supplier of planters
for some very prestigious roof top designs, specified by Architects, Garden
Designers and Landscapers. Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) is fast becoming
the material of choice for many industry professionals for roof terraces and roof
gardens, especially where access can be difficult. GRP is a low maintenance
product, it is lightweight, seamless and durable but above all it is aesthetically
pleasing and available in standard or bespoke shapes and RAL colours.
Let your imagination run wild!

Case Study:Library of Birmingham Being contracted by Frosts Landscapes,
Europlanters manufactured the bespoke 5.2
metre diameter, GRP teardrop shaped planters
for the New Library of Birmingham. These
were then used as flowerbeds to create a
tranquil space on level three. Here visitors can
relax, catch their breath or take a look at the
interesting views of the Birmingham skyline.
After being transported from the Europlanters
factory in Stockport the planters were then
lifted by crane and positioned before planting
began. John Wilkes (Director) said ‘we have
done some exciting projects since 2012 but
perhaps the most memorable has been the New
Library of Birmingham, as British manufacturers
we are proud to have been involved in this very
prestigious project’. The library was officially
opened on 3rd September, 2012 this impressive
piece of architecture holds one of the world’s
largest Shakespear collections.

Case Study: Going back to his rootsJohn Wilkes, Director of Europlanters has gone back to his roots! Johns’ passion for fibre
glass was first discovered whilst making Canoes at Uppingham School as a child. 35 years
on, he is manufacturing planters for a roof top project on the top of the schools new science
block ‘Destination Science’ in the historic village of Uppingham.
The aim for the new 3 storey building was to inspire new generations of young people to
see science as an exciting and attractive subject. The roof terrace is part of the £40m project
invested to redevelop and transform the school. Specified by Landscape Architect Robert
Myers Associates the project consists of 17 planters combining wood seating with hidden
storage boxes.
10
Case Study:Kings CrossEuroplanters are proud to have been involved
in what is being called the largest area of
urban redevelopment in Europe, one of central
London’s most significant improvements and
rejuvenation projects.
Contracted by BAM Construction and working
alongside Willerby Landscapes, Europlanters
took GRP to a higher level using their planters
for a roof top on part of a £170m development
within the 67 acre estate of the Argent Kings
Cross project.
The roof top project comprised of two outdoor
terraces on levels 8 and 11 of a prestigious
building which will be used for offices and
took only 10 weeks for British manufacturers,
Europlanters to complete, from the conception
of six different moulds to the installation of
132 separate sections. Made in RAL 7037 with
a matt finish to match powder coated metal
around the building and to contrast with
the wooden seats and decking. After being
manufactured in the factory in Cheshire, the
sections were taken up to the roof top in stages
and used to build eleven huge planters ranging
from 6000mm to 10500mm in size. A bespoke
drainage system was also fitted on site.
‘It was a very busy 10 weeks’ said John Wilkes
Director of Europlanters ‘We had a very tight
schedule to work to and I am proud to say my
team delivered on time.’
160 tonne bags of compost and 44 bulk bags
of hydroleca were craned up to the top of the
11 storey high building along with over 1800
plants and 42 trees. The troughs were then
planted up by a team of landscape experts
from Willerby Landscapes.
12
Case Study:Grand Canal SquareEuroplanters recently completed
a project where they were
specified by Greenscene Interiors
to manufacture bespoke, giant,
illuminating planters for Grand
Canal Square in Dublin, Ireland.
The location is a prestigious
office block, within 10,000m² of
new commercial and cultural
development overlooking Grand
Canal Square and Harbour. This is
an exciting urban space in Dublin’s
South Docklands.
A scheme was created by a design
team using giant planters finished
in a satin RAL 3003, chosen to
compliment the ‘red carpet’ a resin
glass paving and the red lipstick
lights of the grand walkway.
The planters were placed at the
entrance and also within the large
atrium inside the building. The LED
lit triangle planters of nearly 4m in
length, echoed the geometry of
the space, and the stained glass
panels in the skylights.
Europlanters worked closely with
the designers and Greenscene
from Dublin, representatives flew
over to view our factory and inspect
the first planter.
The planters were so big that
they were reinforced and braced,
stainless steel was used to support
the LED lighting and the guy fixing
points.
14
Stainless Steel PlantersBrushed or Polished finishes available
but also look out for our ‘new’
hammered finish.
Stainless Steel is a recognised material
offering ‘a touch of class’ in the office,
home and around the garden. It’s
tough, sleek and remains elegant
through time. Europlanters offers an
extensive range of imported Stainless
Steel manufactured from 304 Grade as
well as larger bespoke planters made
here in the UK. These units are also
made from 304 Grade (18% Nickel
& 8% Chromium content) Stainless
but Marine (316) Grade can also be
utilised. All bespoke Stainless Steel
Planters are GRP lined for long lasting
protection unless artificial plants are
being installed. The imported Stainless
Units are painted black on the inside
but a plastic liner will prolong their life
indefinitely. From a visual point the
imported Stainless is slightly darker
than British made planters.
It is important to realise due to the
Nickel content Stainless Steel will
not rust but corrosion can occur due
to attack from chemicals (fertiliser)
in the compost. Hence the need to
protect the stainless steel internally,
clear lacquer can be applied to the
outside at an extra cost but only onto a
Brushed finish.
Please see price list or website for more
shapes and sizes.

Caring for your Stainless Steel PlantersStainless Steel cleaners are available from Supermarkets or you can
lightly oil them with a baby oil. For light scratches and scuffs we offer a scotch pad, which must be used laterally to coincide with the existing brushings. Polished Stainless can be cleaned with a
furniture polish but do not use abrasive powders.

Galvanised Steel and AluzincA firm favourites for Exterior Landscapers
large and small. This type of Planter is so
versatile it can be used for single specimen
displays, high & low, and long runs of
planting beds. Bespoke containers are easily
made at little extra cost, ideal for the tricky
Garden Design or intricate roof top display.
The same manufacturing techniques are
used for the Powder Coated planters on
the next page. Below is a list of standard
sizes and although not always in stock can
be made within a week or two. Castors can
be fitted to these planters but due to the
thickness of metal (approx 1mm) weight
reducing measures are necessary.
Use Hydroleca or polystyrene chips.
CharacteristicsGalvanised Steel tends to dull down once
outside, although the latest material is more stable. Aluzinc is a type of galvanised steel
used for cladding buildings and has excellent weathering properties. It also comes in
various patterns, please ask for swatches. Although both metals mark when rubbed
together Aluzinc will stay the same and stand the test of time! All these Planters come pre
drilled, if drain holes are not needed this must be specified.
19
Powder CoatedSteel Planters Steel Planters can be made from ‘Zintec’ or Galvanised sheet, folded and lock formed to shape or fully welded. The later being more expensive but we offer both as a bespoke service. The Planters are then powder coated to suit you or your clients needs. Powder coating is a paint process using electrostatically charged thermosetting or thermoplastic powders. Once charged the powder ‘adheres’ to the metal surface and is cured in an oven at over 150ºC. This makes the paint very tough, UV stable and weather resistant. All our Planters are coated inside and out for all round protection. Powders are readily available from RAL or BS Charts as well as some of our own range of finishes, please call and ask for swatches.
Above is a terrace showing how our planters, combined
with railings help to form an outdoor seating area. The Gun
Metal Planters blend beautifully with the newly refurbished
building.

Corten andStainless SteelCorten sheet can also be lock-formed together to create bespoke steel planters. This method of construction is cheaper than welded planters and offers considerable cost savings.
Corten also known as ‘Weathering Steel’ is widely used to clad buildings and has been used for famous structures like the Angel of the North. It is a steel alloy containing Copper as well as Chromium and Nickel and oxidises to giving a rusty appearance. It is ideal in public places where there is risk of vandalism as scratches soon rust over again. The disadvantages are staining from the corrosion so best to sink into a patio area or place on gravel. These planters need good drainage to prevent continual corrosion. Please email [email protected] or telephone 0161 449 7900 for a quotation.

Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Planters
GRP is a strong versatile material that can be moulded into almost any shape, as long as you have a mould! It’s properties are ideal for planters, both interior and exterior use, it is light weight for roof gardens, easily painted in any RAL colour and does not break down outside. We manufacture all of our range at the factory in Stockport which helps us to keep costs down and a close eye on quality. We produce all our own tooling and can offer a bespoke in house service.
Look out for some new designs for this year, the Flexi range, contemporary Window Boxes, Facet planters and many more new Trough/Cube sizes and finishes.

Tall Squares, Troughs and Cubes
Seamless sleek planters are the modern trend so we have increased our range of sizes to accommodate most needs. Tall Squares can be cut down to bespoke heights at no extra cost. Whilst we carry a stock in Black most of these planters are made to order, please allow a few weeks. The Tall Troughs are excellent for partial screening in cafes, bars, offices and hotels where some privacy is enjoyed without losing the overall atmosphere. These planters
have perfectly square edges, so when butted up together there are no gaps. The R10 comes with a false bottom if required, at 1200mm high they are ideal for hiding unsightly areas. Cubes are perfect for showing off specimen plants, lining pathways or standing either side entrances. Tall Tapered Squares, Slinky ‘S’ & Corks
Tall Tapered Squares remain a popular choice for ‘front of house’ plant displays. Pictured right below 1500mm high Tapered Squares in Black. However our Slinky ‘S’ planter has also risen in popularity due to its versatility, they can be cut in half to form a cascading display at 400/400/1200mm high with removable liner it forms a stunning contemporary effect. Also see the New Slinky Trough.
The Cork Planter well suited to a Champagne Bar this shape is aesthetically pleasing anywhere. They can be used either way up with a false bottom if required and comes in four sizes.

Bowl Planters and Water BowlsOur range of Bowl Planters offer an alternative to traditional planting. They can be used as singular bowls for plants, floral displays and water features or in groups for a cascading display, why not use two together with one upturned as a base (shown right) to add height. There are three sizes available, plus a multitude of colours and finishes to choose from, please see our price list or website www.europlanters.co.uk
27
Tall CylindersFor a more contemporary look than the original classic circular planters. Tall Cylinders can be used in groups of three or more at various heights to create a cascading plant display or to line an entrance as pictured, to great effect. They are 400mm in diameter and available up to 1200mm high. We also provide polystyrene cylinders (POLYC1) at 400mm high and polythene liners to lift the planting depth. This not only saves time and money but keeps the water level nearer to the roots.
28
Window & Wall BoxesVery popular for both Interior and Exterior planting. We offer tapered or square cornered troughs. Tapered troughs come without a return lip making them easier to plant or replant and so are a cheaper option. Wall boxes are great for kitchen garden herb planting.
Pyramids, Cones & Hanging BowlsGive your interior and exterior designers an attractive alternative from the usual hanging baskets. Half Cones can be mounted directly onto a wall, ideal for live and artificial displays when floor space is restricted. See our price list for all variations.

Ceramic Look & Classic Shaped Planters
Although some of these planter shapes have been around for a few years they still look great in offices, shopping centres and conservatories. There is a shape and size for every location. We have brought the ceramic look up-to-date by using plain colours, shown here is a Tall Tapered Circular (900 mm high) and Boat Pots in Lime Green and Red.
These planters can also be made to look like stone with our granite effect or metal using either silver, gold or chrome finishes.

Rotationally Moulded Plastic Planters
This extensive range is made from tough, scratch resistant polyethylene. The material is recyclable, black planters are made from recycled material - so very eco-friendly and made here in the UK! Colours include: Black, White Marble, Dark Granite, Grey Granite, Green Granite, Slate and Sandstone. The Traditional Planters also come in Light and Dark Terracotta. All the colours have high UV stability and will last for many years inside or out. Polyethylene is frost proof but does not accept paint.
The main background image shows Havana’s in White Marble, other images show Sandstone and plain white.
The ‘Stone Look’ range from Planter World offer the look of natural stone plus great value.
See our price list for the many variations in shapes, sizes and colours.
33
Stainless Steel Frame PlantersThese ultra modern planters provide a contemporary blend of Stainless Steel and Natural Wood or Granite panels. The great thing about these planters are their flexibility, they can be used as Troughs or Tall Squares, forming barriers or placed on their own. There are two sizes of Tall Squares and three Cubes available - Please see our price list for sizes. Various panels are available ranging from Natural wood to GRP replicating Mahogany, Oak, Beech or Slate.
34
Timber PlantersWood is versatile and has a natural beauty which can be enhanced using stains and varnishes. Although suitable for inside and outside displays, care must be taken to protect the timber from damp compost, therefore we recommend a GRP lining. Unless hardwood is used a varnish or paint is required to protect the outer surface.
NEW Wood Look GRP is a great alternative to the real thing. Not only does it look good, needs no maintenance and wont rot but it’s cheaper! The GRP panels are made up and bonded together to create the size you require - prices on application. We can produce troughs or squares up to 2000mm long and 1000mm high in a variety of colours to replicate Mahogany, Oak, Teak or simply black or white finishes.

Small GardensSmall gardens and terraces need to be
planned with as much, if not more care
than large ones. Think about how you
want to use your garden throughout
the year; note where the sun is during
the day, this will dictate your seating
and planter positions. Different levels in
a small garden add interest and when
planters are used to give height it also
makes light work of plant maintenance,
as shown here with these large sleek
white planters.

Water FeaturesEnhance your garden design, roof terrace or landscape with a water feature. It gives movement, sound and a focal point.
GRP has no limits! Let your imagination flow… it is the perfect media as it is water tight, robust, maintenance free and is available in any size, shape or colour.
Whether you are going for a contemporary look or something more traditional, the durable properties of GRP are perfect. Why not design your own unique water feature and let us make it for you, as well as natural looking stones we have feature moulds that can be incorporated into your design (shown
here in the main photograph is a 2.5m x 2m waterfall,
this can be manufactured in any colour rock).
Our GRP Troughs and Bowls can be adapted to hold water on a large or small scale. Bespoke Projects
Europlanters own factory is capable of producing all sorts of GRP mouldings.
We have over 20 years of experience behind us manufacturing all sorts of
wonderful shapes. Projects shown above and right are design led desk

a funky office or contemporary garden (see opposite page).
Bespoke GRP Planters are becoming increasingly popular for large street
planting areas and raised flower beds (see
photos on opposite page). Although more expensive than standard planters they are quite often cheaper than building
brick walls, withstanding weather extremes for many years. We can even
use a stone effect paint to look like a rendered or stone wall. Call for advice on
economical design and build projects.

Root Refreshers can be used in pots, planters, hanging baskets and planting beds to extend the period between watering of plants for up to six weeks!
Once installed this is the watering solution you can forget!

Revolving Tree PitsMade to suit pre-formed concrete planters where turning is required due to one sided lighting, the pits can be located on ball bearings, (see below).
F.A.Q. ABOUT ROOT REFRESHERS
Are Root Refreshers fi lled with a swelling gel?In short, No. Root Refreshers contain a material called HappiRoot a neutral product based on polyoxyethylene which is patented by Smart Tech Ltd. When swollen with water HappiRoot has a porous structure where channels allow free water to be stored and air to circulate. HappiRoot does not and is not intended to replicate the behaviour of other water swelling materials.
What is the main difference between HappiRoot* and swelling gels? HappiRoot expands approximately ten times, whilst swell gels expand hundreds of times. HappiRoot retains its structure allowing the free fl ow of water and air, and at the same time provides a honeycomb structure to support and encourage root growth, whereas swelling gels become a sticky mass (like mud or clay) which does not allow for the free fl ow of air and water, the HappiRoot in Root Refreshers by Europlanters retains its structure with internal pores and spaces for free water and air.
Have they been tested? Each product that makes up Root Refreshers by Europlanters has been extensively tested by the inventors to ensure optimum results, along with our own experiments – See Root Refreshers in action by Europlanters. We will continue to use our Root Refreshers in house and push them to extremes!
Can Root Refreshers save costs?Yes, when using a liquid fertilizer the polymer will also lock in the nutrients of the feed and release it when the plant takes water, reducing the amount of fertilizer washed away when watering, saving money. The materials used for Root Refreshers have also been carefully selected to ensure optimum results and the cost of each Root Refresher is far less expensive than most other irrigation systems.
Are Root refreshers easy to store?Yes, Root Refreshers are easy to store as a little goes a long way! Transporting is easy too as Root Refreshers are lightweight and compact.
Are Root Refreshers environmentally friendly? The HappiRoot Polymer inside Root Refreshers is biodegradable over time in direct sunlight and it’s a non-toxic product.
Are Root Refreshers British Made?Root Refreshers are manufactured in Britain using the highest quality and patented materials.
