THINkING SMALL

This May, when you’re strolling down Main Street in downtown Durham, you’re going to walk past a frantically working entrepreneur cozily situated in a tiny office space in the storefront window of Beyu Caffe. And you’ll probably wonder what the heck is going on. The Smoffice—or The World’s Smallest Office—is the next startup initiative from the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Durham Inc. and is at least a little outside of the box or in a very small box depending on how you look at it.

The initiative, aiming to be a national competition to give away the office space, will also provide one startup with a free lease in a downtown condo at Mangum 506 for six months. Applications for the space opened on February 29 and already Durham has received national press in the Silicon Valley publication TechCrunch as well as TechJournal South. Applica-tions close Friday, March 30.

Interested entrepreneurs need only to submit a one-page business plan along with a 60 second YouTube pitch about why they want to be in Durham. The winning company will be announced on Friday, April 13 and The Smoffice will officially open on May 1. This effort has involved a number of Chamber members in the work including Kompleks Creative, Center Studio Architecture, McDonald York, Time Warner Cable, eyeNET Security, A Small Orange, Bull City Mobile, TKTK, Forrest Firm, P.C. , Morris, Manning, and Martin, L.L.P., CBi and of course, Beyu Caffe.

Visit www.thesmoffice.com to find out more or apply and follow us on Facebook and Twitter @TheSmoffice. Even if you aren’t interested in applying, please spread the word and encourage friends and colleagues to apply. And come May, visit Beyu Caffe for a chance to see entrepreneurial spirit on display.

TRIANGLE CHAMBERS TRIP TOWASHINGTON, D.C.

Each spring, Chambers from across the Tri-angle Region come together for the Triangle Chambers Trip to Washington, D.C. This trip is designed as a means for our local chambers to collectively address the issues affecting the region, as one voice, with our members of Congress. This two-day trip is a snapshot into the latest developments taking shape on Capitol Hill. Attendees enjoy networking with other Triangle business leaders as well as learning and hearing first-hand from the men and women who’ve been elected to represent not just the Triangle, but many regions and districts within North Carolina.

This year’s trip is June 5-6, 2012. For more information, please contact John White at [email protected] or 328-8724.
