Singing brings joy to manypeople – but did you know thatyour passion for singing canlead to incredible benefits inyour physical, emotional, andsocial health? A quick lookthrough the internet I found 11healthy benefits of singing. Re-searchers have found singingto boosts the immune system. It’s a workout as you sing. Yourlungs get a workout as you em-ploy proper singing techniquesand your diaphragm growsstronger. Singing improves yourposture and helps with yoursleep. Researchers believethat singing can helpstrengthen throat and palatemuscles which helps stop snor-ing and sleep apnea. Singingis a natural anti-depressant andis known to release endorphins, the feel-good brain chemical.Singing even lowers stress levelsand improves mental alertness. Why, singing even boosts yourconfidence and can widenyour circle of friends. So wheream I going with all this informa-tion on singing? I’m setting the‘tone’ for the rest of the storyabout the 45th Year Anniver-sary of the Waseca Chorale.Growing up I remember mymother who loved to sing.Mostly in the kitchen. She’dwake us kids up singing all dif-ferent kids of funny songs. When the Holidays wouldcome around, mom would besinging all kinds of Christmassongs with her raspy smoker’svoice. All the time having alarge smile on her face. I’m nota singer even though I pretendto be. Singing makes me feelgood. How about you? Iasked 5 members of theWaseca Chorale to introducethemselves and tell us whatkeeps them involved with theWaseca Chorale. The first to re-spond was Toni Bauleke. Here’s what she had to say,“I’ve been a member of thechorale for about 42 yrs. We’vehad several directors and ourmembership changes but onething stays the same: we get togo sing! It’s my special time justfor me. I’ve been a boardmember ever since we’ve hadone. We work together really

well. Everyone has a job to do.This helps our director as shecan concentrate on the music.I’m so thankful that I have thiswonderful opportunity! Then came Allen Judd’s re-sponse. “I’ve been involvedapproximately 30 years. I amretired after working 26 years atE.F.Johnson and 17 years at En-tegris Inc. in Chaska. I joinedbecause, like so many others, Ienjoy singing. The added ben-efit is that we like performingmusic for others to enjoy andthe opportunity to learn moreabout music in general andsinging specifically. The choralehas been blessed over theyears to have several excellentmusic directors, especially ourcurrent director Irene Mulca-hey. Irene is able to get themost out of all of us amateursingers, she is an excellentteacher with extremely longpatience. Personally, I havelearned a considerableamount about singing, musicand how to work within a largegroup. Rehearsals and per-formances have always pro-vided an escape of sorts for mefrom work and other stressesthat we all encounter in life. Ican concentrate on the musicand shut out all other distrac-tions.” Then there’s GaryArnold who states, “I’ve beenwith the chorale for 9 years witha one year break in theprocess. I sing bass, and I amthe treasurer of Board of Direc-tors for about 6 months now. Ibecame involved because I re-ally enjoy singing and I knowmany of the people who are inchorale. The main benefit thatI derive from my chorale par-ticipation is the social contactwith the other members. I readin a recent magazine articlethat one of most beneficialthings that you can do as youage is to sing in a musicalgroup. Not only because youenjoy the music but there is areal feeling of satisfaction thatcomes from the teamwork. Also, it is supposed to be a realstress relief. I don't know aboutthe stress part but I do enjoythe participation.” NancyLehman joined the other bysaying, “I joined the WasecaChorale in 1982 when BarbaraSankovitz invited me to audi-tion She knew my love formusic and I was new toWaseca at the time I am a sec-ond soprano and I’ve been amember for the last 36 yearsthat’s 72 concerts! I am also amember of the Waseca

Chorale Board. I love to singand enjoy preforming with agroup of people that enjoy thesame thing. Our concerts are 2per year, one in the Spring andthe Sunday following Thanks-giving. What a great way tobegin celebrating the Christ-mas Season. There have beena number of Chorale directorsover the past 36 years that Ihave enjoyed singing for Themusic challenges that each ofthem has brought to theChorale have been different. However, Irene Mulcahey is avery special one. Her concertmusic selections are wonderfuland each time we preform youthink to yourself how can it bebetter than the last perform-ance? It’s Irene! She’s a beau-tiful, caring and a very talentedlady and she puts many hoursinto each concert perform-ance from choosing the musicto conducting it. She’s amaz-ing! I’m proud to be a part ofthe Waseca Chorale.”I would be remiss if I didn’t get

a response from the Director,Irene Mulcahey. Here’s her

thoughts. “The chorale boardhad asked me several timesover the years to direct thegroup. With teaching full timeand being director of music atmy church, I didn’t have thetime to commit to being a partof the group. I retired fromteaching in 2010, so when theboard askedme once again todirect the chorale, the timingwas right for me to say yes. Di-recting the chorale gives methe opportunity to continue mycareer in teaching music, butat a different level. It has beenrewarding to work on challeng-ing music with a seasonedchoral group.”45 years and going strong is

the Waseca Chorale. You oweyourself the opportunity to takepart in this years Holiday event.

The next event isSunday, November 25th,

4:00 p.m.Sacred Heart Church.

Tickets can be purchased inadvance from

Waseca Music Co. andThe Golden Touch Salon

and from chorale members.

You are invited to attend our Celebrate the Gift dinner and program at Christ Community Church,

2200 4th Street NE, Waseca, MN 56093 on November 30th and December 1st and 2nd.

We will feature beautiful decorations as well as elegantly set tables of various styles. The dinner is held over three nights due to its popularity. Tickets are $15.00 and available for purchase online by visiting the church website, www.cccwaseca.org. Jillian Jones will be the featured speaker and is a singer/ songwriter and recording artist from Mankato. She will be sharing her struggles and how God and her music brought her to a place of healing.

This year is our 22nd annual Women’s Christmas Candlelight Dinner. It was originally started with one night back in 1997 at the Eagles Club, moved to the American Legion for two years, then to Farm America for four years and presently has grown to three nights at Christ Community Church. This event would not be possible without the support of table decorators and hostesses, church decorators, musicians, Pheasant Café for catering the meal, our men and students who serve us so graciously, and the Celebrate the Gift committee.

Each year, the evening is prepared to be a special gift. A night filled with friends, lights, decorations, beautiful music and a wonderful meal. This is not a fund raiser. It is a special night planned just for you – a night to celebrate the greatest gift of all! All ladies are welcome to come to “Celebrate the Gift” of Jesus Christ.

Have you ever wonderedabout all the many facets ofraising turkeys? From the mo-ment day-old poults – or babyturkeys – arrive at the farm, thecare is nonstop. And the plan-ning begins even before that, when barns must be cleanedout and prepped for the nextflock? Well, not from homeyou’ll find turkey farmers doingwhat they do to be part of the450 Minnesota turkey farmersraising 46 million turkeys thisyear. I reached out to a friendand asked her to tell me abouther turkey farming. Her name isKim Halvorson. So Kim, I asked, tell me about your farming op-eration. “It’s name is HalvorsonFarms, LLC and we’ve been inoperation since 1988. 30 inter-esting years.” Kim stated. “Ini-tially, we became part of a"brand new" program as a"contract" grower with JeromeFoods. In 1996 we dissolvedthat contract and became anindependent Turkey Producer.”So, do you have a normal day?“There really isn’t a normalTurkey day! More like a normalTurkey year.” Kim stated. “Thisfarm has two "FINISH" buildingsand one "BROOD" facility. Dayold poults come to the farmand are placed in the more

specialized "BROOD" facility. After spending 5-6 weeks in thisbarn, they are then moved toone of our Finish barns to spendthe next 15-16 weeks. Brood isthen cleaned, washed and dis-infected and a new flock ofday old poults come to thefarm. The same scenario ex-cept they will move to theOTHER grow out barn andspend 15-16 weeks before ship-ment to market for processing.”I’m thinking that Turkey farmingis like milking cows. Is that true?“Animal agriculture requires24/7 - 365 attention! Any timewe are moving brood or ship-ping birds to market is stressful. As turkey growers we attemptto maintain a high level of bio-security on our farm to helpprotect our animals. Weatheris an issue as well. We maydeal with very hot or cold tem-peratures within our barns. Also, power outages require usto turn to a generator as thebarns need electricity to pumpwater, run fans, and feed lines. The tornado that leveled ourFINISH#2 barn and lifted ourFINISH#1 caused devastationto this operation.” Halvorsonwent on to say, “Being aFarmer allows Halvorson Farmsto be part of a very elite groupof people who help to "FEEDTHE WORLD" ! As a MinnesotaTurkey grower, Halvorson Farmsis also part of a group of MNTurkey Growers that helps toput MN on the map as thelargest producer of turkey inthe USA. I am blessed to be avery small part of an industrythat has far reaching effects.Besides, Turkey is high in pro-tein, low in fat and an ab-solutely perfect choice tocomplete anyone's dietetic

needs.”I for one would like to ‘thank’

the turkey farmers of the world.I eat turkey year round.

I’m writing today sitting at the Minneapolis airport about to start a journey across the world...to Israel! This incredible opportunity presented itself last May and while I don’t have the space to explain all the crazy details of this unfolding venture, I can tell you it’s been a beautiful faith- growing journey the last five months...and I haven’t even left the country yet! I’d invite you pray for this trip and those I am going with, but I’ll already be nestled back home in the Northwoods of Minnesota by time you read this. So, instead, I invite you to pray for me and the team as we unpack this experience. My heart is so stirred and I can’t wait to arrive. I believe this will be an incredibly transforming two weeks! Earlier this week, I was thinking about what it’s like when you go to a friend’s home for the first time. I always get to know a person more after being in their home. I love seeing how they decorate, how they use their space, and how their home feels. When we are in one another’s homes, it’s a deeper place of connection and intimacy. I thought this was random to be thinking about but then I sensed Jesus saying, “That’s what this trip is going to be like. I’m inviting you to my homeland. You’ll get to know me so

much more.” We’ve been created for connection, relationship, and intimacy. As I’m preparing to encounter the God of Hope more these next two weeks, I am praying the same over you all and that we all get to know Him so much more. Suzanne Barbknecht - daughter of God, writer, photographer, worship leader, pastor, missionary to the Northland - originally from the fertile farm land of Waseca, now resides in the Northwoods of Bemidji and is passionate about living a lifestyle of hope while inspiring others in the same. Say Hello to Betty Sinn This month of November 2018 brings us to introduce

another of our newer residents, Betty Sinn. She was born Betty Lou Johnson in June of 1939 in Bimidji,

MN. She lived in a Lutheran home in St. Paul through the 3rd grade at which time she was adopted. Betty joined a family that was also named Johnson and grew up with a sister (also adopted) in Deerfield, MN. When she was baptized, she was given the choice to change her name, and she chose Elizabeth Lee. She now goes by Betty. Betty went to country school through the 7th grade, then attended High School in Medford until graduating in ’57. After graduating, Betty held a handful of short positions until landing as a secretary at Owatonna Manufacturing Co. She stayed with the company as it changed hands several times, and finally retired from Mustang, when it closed in 2001. She found that retirement didn’t suit her, so she took a job at Walmart in Owatonna and stayed for 13 years.

Along the way, Betty met and married Edward Sinn and had 2 children. They divorced after 4 years of marriage. Betty enjoyed riding horses, traveling, playing golf, watching Nascar, and spending any time she could with family.

She came to Colony Court when she found she needed help with her personal care. Her daughter, who lives in Waseca, suggested Colony Court because she had personal ties with some of the staff. “I love it here. People are so generous and so kind.”

We love having you, Betty, and Welcome!

typically incorporate arounded “crook” handle or “L-shaped” ergonomic handle.Usually made of lightweightaluminum or wood, most ofthe aluminum models are ad-justable in height and someeven fold up.2. Offset-handle canes: These

also are single point straightcanes, but come with a swanneck curve in the upper part ofthe shaft that puts the user’sweight directly over the canetip for added stability. Thesecanes are typically aluminum,adjustable-height and comewith a flat, soft grip handlethat’s easy on the hands. Both straight canes and off-

set-handle canes are bestsuited for people who have aslight walking impairment.3. Quad canes: Also called

broad based canes, thesework best for people whoneed maximum weight bear-ing and support. Quad canescomes with four separate tips(some have three tips) at thebase, they usually have an off-set flat handle, and can re-main standing when you let goof it which is very convenient.

Fitting the CaneOnce you decide on the

type of cane, you need tomake sure it fits. Stand up withyour arms hanging straightdown at your side. The top ofthe cane should line up withthe crease in your wrist, so yourarm is slightly bent at theelbow when you grip thecane. The cane should also have a

rubber tip at the bottom toprevent slipping. A worn or tornrubber tip is dangerous, socheck the tip frequently to en-sure it’s in good condition and

Dear Savvy Senior,I have severe arthritis in myknee and could use a walkingcane to help me get around. Isthere anything I should knowabout canes before I buy one?

— Limping Linda

Dear Linda,When it comes to choosing a

cane for balance and supportmost people don’t give itmuch thought, but theyshould. Walking canes come inhundreds of different styles, shapes and sizes today, so youneed to take into accountyour needs and preferences toensure you choose one that’sappropriate for you. Here aresome tips that can help.

Types of CanesThe first thing you need to

consider is how much supportyou need. That will help youdetermine the kind of caneyou choose. The three basictypes of canes you’ll have tochoose from include:1. Straight canes: These are

basic, single point canes that

replace it when necessary.Rubber tips come in differentsizes depending on the shaft di-ameter, and can usually bepurchased in multipacks atyour local pharmacy. The grip is also very important,

so choose one that’s ergonom-ically designed, or one that hasa molded rubber or foam gripthat’s comfortable to hold onto. And if you travel much, con-

sider getting a folding canethat can be packed or storedaway easily.

How to UseWhen using a cane, it should

always be held in the hand op-posite of the leg that needssupport. For example, if yourknee pain is on your left side, you should use the cane in your

right hand. The cane shouldthen move forward as you stepforward with the bad leg.If you have to go up stairs,

you should lead with the goodleg. And when you go downstairs, you should put your caneon the step first and then stepdown with your bad leg.The Mayo Clinic offers a slide

show that will show you how tochoose and use a cane. It’salso a smart idea to work witha physical therapist.

Where to BuyYou can buy canes at drug-

stores, discount retailers, med-ical supply stores and online, usually between $10 and $50.You’ll also be happy to knowthat Medicare covers caneswith a written prescription froma physician.
