Sandy OK, well, let me have it. What are you waiting for?

Martha She says that she and her husband were driving home last night, and suddenly, right up ahead, they saw a gigantic cross light up, right out of nowhere.

Sandy Good grief! That must have freaked her out, big time! Especially since she’s not a practicing Christian.

Martha Exactly! So, now she’s going through a lot of religious introspection. She has even gone so far as to think the “shining cross” was a sort of divine “omen.”

Déjà vu! Is It Real? “Déjà vu” means “already seen” in French. A spiritual science research foundation studied why people go through such kinds of experiences and their root causes.

1) Do people in your country believe in the ability to communicate with spirits of the dead?

2) Would you attend a party if you knew that a séance was going to be held?

5 Let’s Discuss Discuss the questions in as much detail as possible.

Do You Believe? Belief in the paranormal is common around the world as trends in movies and television programming reflect the widespread interest in the mystical and supernatural. Let’s look at paranormal beliefs of people.

Sandy Do you think it really happened? Did she really see it? Sounds like a real cock and bull story to me!

Martha No, as a matter of fact, my husband has demystified the incident. I’ll tell you about it at lunch!

Lesson 2 . I Had the Strangest Dream

a. To snooze: to sleep for a short period b. Shuteye: sleep c. To catch some Z’S: to get some sleep d. A catnap: a short period of light sleep, especially during the day and usually not in bed

3

Well, the project is finished, but I had been burning the candle at both ends for so long that my sleep has really suffered. I guess I‘m actually too tired to sleep!

Goodness! You have to get some shuteye sometime, or you'll get sick!

I know, but my sleep patterns are really out of whack these days. I manage to fall asleep, but before I can get into a really deep sleep, I wake up and can’t get back to sleep again.

Wow! That sounds like a really bad case of insomnia. Be careful. Have you tried a glass of warm milk?

I hate warm milk, and besides, that’s an old “grandma” remedy – it doesn’t work.

Jeremy Hey! Get a look at that! It must be a couple hundred years old. It looks scary even in broad daylight.

Stanley It is… You’re looking at the oldest building in the area. It was first built as a library. Then it became a hospital during the Civil War and, after that, an insane asylum. Most recently it housed the Sherriff’s office and the jail. It’s supposed to be haunted.

5

Is that right? I've never heard a single word about it.

I think the municipality organizes tours, and you can even spend the night inside for $40. Lots of people claim to have seen and heard strange things. Their stories make my hair stand on end.

Just hearing you talk about it gives me goose bumps. How can you be as cool as a cucumber? Have you ever been inside? Shall we go in, maybe stay overnight?

No to both questions. And I don’t want to spend good money to visit an old, dilapidated building, much less spend the night. Just calm down and take it easy.

Yes. I’d like to know how the classes are going at the new school where you’re teaching.

Things are great, but I don't thing I could ever get used to this new six day schedule that they tell me I have to work. Of course. They need the extra time to study so that they could get a good score on their exams. If they do that, then they could get into a good university, and then get a good job. Our parents here care a lot about their children’s future, you know.

I guess so. I guess in America, we don’t think too much about putting our children through all of their after-school academies. We just want them to have time enjoying being kids.

But don’t you worry if they will get a good job?

Western vs. Eastern Values

Parenting In most western countries children are raised and cared for by their parents with limited help from their grandparents. In eastern counties a child is looked after by two parents and two sets of grandparents who often compete fiercely to be the child’s favorite.

Perception of Beauty In many of eastern countries light skin is beautiful and brown skin is avoided like the plague. Asian women use skin whitening beauty products and avoid the sun while western women tanning projects and embrace the sun.

Chase Hey Patricia, I see you’ve got a pretty sweet new MP3 player. What kind of music is that frizzy little head of yours into these days anyway?

Patricia I’ve been all over the place lately trying out new things. I found this great website for downloading music and movies, and it’s got all the latest tracks from everyone on the charts. I’m not 100% sure it’s legal, though. I’m just saying…

Lesson 23 . I Have Already Downloaded It

a. Drop a track: when an artist releases a new song b. Elevator music: boring background music for stores and other public places c. File sharing: using a computer network to provide information to others d. Strikes a chord: when something seems familiar to you or is connected to you in some way

45

Well, I’ve got no qualms about downloading stuff off the Internet. The artists will hardly see a dime from their albums anyway, so why should I care? I don’t want my hard-earned money going to stuff the pockets of some big corporate execs who couldn’t care less about anything other than a top 40 hit.

Yeah, the only thing that I feel kind of guilty about is that the artist is cut out of any royalties. But I guess they have to keep up with the times as well.

Agreed. Hey, speaking of new music, have you had a chance to check out the new track Bassnectar dropped last week?

“ I Found This Great Website “

Huh? Who’s that? So, what have you got on your playlist for the week?

Molly Hmm, what’s that story about that you’re reading? That guy wearing the do-rag looks kind of familiar.

Alfred That’s because he’s the owner of that mega men’s clothing store around the corner. Haven’t you seen his face plastered all over the billboards around here lately?

Lesson 24 . From the Wrong Side of the Tracks

a. Racial slur: a negative term used to refer to a particular race of people b. Politically correct: a way of using terms in the most neutral way possible in order to avoid showing judgment or prejudice c. From the wrong side of the tracks: coming from a place that is considered poor and disadvantaged d. Strikes out like a sore thumb: easily observed because of being very different from everything surrounding it

47

You mean the ones that stick out like a sore thumb with their tacky slogans? I guess something he’s doing is working, though—heard he’s making a pretty penny.

Sure is. He's from the wrong side of the tracks, and people from that part of town are pretty much treated like second-class citizens. His neighborhood rallied to raise funds.

It just surprises me, and I know it’s not terribly PC (politically correct), but I wish he’d invaded another neighborhood. That store’s an eyesore compared to the upscale shops.

“ That’s Not Terribly PC “

So what exactly have you got against this guy, anyway?

I just don’t want to see this area start to go downhill. You know the kind of people that place is going to attract.
