LED rear lamps: Advancements in new technologies

LEDs improve brakingCompared to conventional bulbs, LEDs have a shorter response. For emergency braking at a speed of 120 km/h (see graph above), the driver behind has an additional braking distance of around 6.6 m. This results in improved safety.

The proportion of new vehicles fitted with LED rear lamps is increasing, due to the importance of design and a safety. For retailers and workshops, it means that the aftermarket demand for rear lamps featur-ing this technology, will continue to grow.

Small lamps with big advantagesLED semiconductor technology creates new be-nefits for rear lamps on passenger cars. Reduced consumption and increased efficiency are just part of the story. In addition, they are less sensitive to mechanical impacts than conventional bulbs and feature an average service life that normally ex-ceeds that of the vehicle itself. Optimum utilization of space and new design options are further benefits of using LED technology.

For braking lamps, fractions of a second are critical in an emer-gency. LED braking lamps respond more quickly helping drivers to deal with dangerous situations.

For rear lamps, light distribution plays an impor-tant role. The different functions of the light need to be clearly visible without dazzling the traffic behind. With ACS technology (Advanced Calculated Surfaces), the reflector elements are modeled on computers and designed to achieve optimum light distribution.

More light, better designEven the back of the vehicle needs to be visible and stylish. ACS opens up a whole range of additional design options that cannot be achieved using con-ventional reflector shapes. Computer optimization allows a variety of different surfaces to be calculated without adversely affecting the lighting power.
