daY oNE – moNdaY, march 9, 2015 7:30 – 8:30 REGISTRATION AND cONTINENTAL BREAKFAST

8:30 – 9:30 WELcOMING REMARKS AND OPENING KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Our changing demography has profound implications for virtually all dimensions of our society, from the housing and labour markets to health care, government, and consumer spending. No organization will be left untouched – including those in the not-for-profit sector, who are operating in an increasingly competitive business environment. Ryan’s presentation will explore how Canada’s population is changing through aging and immigration, and how these dynamics are altering conditions on both the demand and supply side of the market. Building on this, Ryan will share a framework that organizations should consider in their efforts to respond to both their changing external environment (their customers) and their changing internal environment (their workers).

Keynote Speaker: Ryan Berlin, Economist, Demographer and Director at Urban Futures Inc.

Attend this informative session to understand the views of stakeholders relating to the Statement of Principles issued by the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) and the Public Sector Accounting Board and to learn about the numerous activities underway as the Boards consider the feedback from stakeholders. Now is the time to find out about the exciting changes that are happening.

10:30 – 11: 15 Role of cFO As Strategist – It’s No Longer Just about the Numbers

With the rapid pace of change in the charities and not-for-profit landscape – the role of the CFO has continued to evolve to meet the needs of this dynamic environment. While the traditional roles of steward and financial manager continue to exist, the CFO’s responsibilities with respect to strategy have continued to develop. Yes, the CFO is responsible for the financial implications of the strategy, but now they are being asked to play a leading role in setting the strategy. In this session, we will discuss this changing role and how the CFO can excel in this environment.

11:15 – 12: 15 cONcURRENT SESSIONS – cHOOSE ONE OF TWO:

Planning and Budgeting – Getting Everyone on the Bus and Getting the Bus Going in the Right Direction

Planning and budgeting is a core responsibility of the CFO. But this process cannot be done in isolation. It requires the input and buy-in of everyone in the organization. Planning and budgeting is critical in ensuring the mission and vision of the organization will be met. The CFO is the link between the two - at all stages of the process including the interpretation of the results. This session will discuss how the CFO can be more effective in achieving these objectives.

OR Explaining Financial Information – Simply

It can often be difficult to explain financial information to those with limited or no financial sophistication. It is essential that finance executives are able to provide financial insight and make compelling arguments by balancing accuracy, depth and understandability when discussing matters that those outside your profession find complex and confusing. This panel discussion will address some of the more common and more significant challenges in providing understandable financial insight and explore ways to effectively address those challenges. With representation from fundraising and service delivery as well as finance, this panel will inform the discussion from multiple points of view.
