Thank you. Each year as we gather the names of those who stood with us in our mission to support the Institute, we are reminded of the thousands of individuals who make this effort possible, and we are humbled by the passion they bring as they continue their support of this worthy endeavor.

In Fiscal Year 2019, 5,446 members of the VMI family gave $39.9 million in gifts and commitments in support of the Institute. For that, we are grateful. Thanks to their generosity, VMI’s ability to offer cadets a thorough preparation for meaningful lives of service, leadership, and success has been strengthened, and that is an amazing legacy.

The following pages represent who we are as the greater VMI alumni, family, and friends. Representing gifts big and small, every name links to a person who believes in the mission of VMI, our cadets, and the impact our graduates make in the world. I am extremely grateful for all those who make the commitment to give back to the Institute. Every gift counts. Every donor matters.

It is an honor to work on post to witness firsthand the impact of your philanthropy. Whether it is cadet

travel funds to symposia to present their research, first-generation cadets grateful for the opportunity to attend VMI or cadets inspired by privately funded faculty, your gifts, large and small, in total have a profound impact on VMI and the Corps of Cadets.

So much has been accomplished with your support. And while we are thankful for the 23% of alumni who support VMI annually, and grateful for the 11% of alumni who make the Keydet Club the most successful athletic scholarship funding program in the Southern Conference, imagine what we could do for VMI if 50% of our alumni realized the difference every gift makes, the opportunity every gift affords, and the life every gift changes. Together, let’s raise the bar because we matter to VMI and VMI matters to our nation.

Our DonorsIn Fiscal Year 2019, the Institute received gifts and commitments from 5,446 donors—which included 133

organizations—through the VMI Alumni Agencies. Again, alumni made up the majority of donors, but VMI also enjoyed strong support from its friends, who made up 30% of the year’s total.

Endowment SupportThanks to sound investment strategies and the consistent

generosity of the VMI Family, the value of the endowments that support the Institute has risen. Under the management of VMI Investment Holdings, LLC, these endowments annually generate tens of millions of dollars in support of Institute’s extraordinary education and provide millions of dollars in scholarship support to cadets and unrestricted funds.

Reunion CampaignsThe three classes observing these “milestone” reunions in FY 2019 raised a grand total of more than $11.4 million in gifts and

commitments through their reunion campaigns. One hundred twenty Brother Rats of the Class of 1993—a 50% participation rate—gave more than $1.09 million. Thanks to a participation rate of 26%, the Class of 2008 raised $107,000. Thanks to the generousity of 86% of its Brother Rats, the year’s 50th reunion class, the Class of 1969 (see photo), presented the Institute with more than $10.2 million.

Cadets Receiving Scholarship Support

The generosity of the VMI Family—past and present—generate substantial scholarship support every year. In Fiscal Year 2019, hundreds of cadets received full and partial scholarships of all types managed by the VMI Alumni Agencies.

The Institute SocietyThe Institute Society recognizes alumni and friends who are exceptionally generous in providing unrestricted financial support

to VMI’s academic and co-curricular programs through the Foundation Fund and provide leadership support to VMI through VMI Foundation-managed endowments and funds.

The Institute Society’s recognition levels are the General George C. Marshall Order ($100,000 or more in lifetime giving to VMI), the General Francis Henney Smith Order ($25,000 to $99,999), the General Scott Shipp Order ($10,000 to $24,999), the Colonel J.T.L. Preston Order ($5,000 to $9,999), and the General Thomas Jackson Order ($2,000 to $4,999). Gifts to endowments and restricted funds under the management of the VMI Foundation are recognized within the Colonel J.T.L. Preston Order, General Scott Shipp Order, and the General Francis Henney Smith Order. The Cadet John B. Strange Order is open to younger alumni who make gifts of certain amounts to the Foundation Fund.

of the Institute’s NCAA Division I sports program through the Athletic Operations Fund and the Keydet Club Scholarship Fund. This year, the leadership levels were Full Scholarship–Out of State ($36,000 or more), Full Scholarship–In State ($18,000 to

$35,999), Full Scholarship ($12,000 to $17,999), Sportsmen ($7,000 to $11,999), Spirit ($5,000 to $6,999), Flying Squadron ($3,000 to $4,999), Letterman ($1,875 to $2,999), and Big Red ($1,000 to $1,874).
