New Curriculum & Belts Over the Christmas school holiday period PHOENIX MARTIAL ARTS and MACI (Martial Arts College International) member schools, pooled together to have a united belt system and curriculum across all schools. All instructors where able to voice their opinion and experi- ence. The final outcome was approved by Grandmaster Ryoo to meet the out- comes for the Korean Hapkido Federa- tion (KHF) so that all schools meet the international guidelines that have been set out for all Black Belt Candidates. What does that all mean for our students? There will be a change of the belt structure. No students will lose their current grade. There will how- ever, be a belt equivalency. The new belt structure will start with the next grading. The second advantage of the new curriculum will be that students will be able to train with other MACI member schools and the curriculum framework will be the same. Finally and most importantly, Black Belt Can- didates will have the opportunity to have their certification from Korea Hapkido Federation which means the black belt qualification will be interna- tionally recognised which is not some- thing that other Hapkido schools may offer. As always, all instructors are here to answer any questions that you may have. Aleks Samardzic, University of Sydney Scholarship. It is always great to see that our students are achieving well inside and out-side of our classroom. One of senior belts in both Hapkido and Gongkwon Yu-sul, Mr. Aleks Samardzic was awarded a scholarship which took him and a very select few to Cambodia from the University of Sydney. Students engaged with the University’s Greater Angkor Project. This world-leading interdiscipli-nary project is focused on better understanding the social and spa-tial organisation of the vast, low-density Khmer capital of Angkor, established in the ninth century and since abandoned, in what is now Cambodia. During the two-week intensive field study, students were divided into teams consisting of one student from each of the four disciplines represented. These disciplines are Archaeology/Heritage Studies, Geosciences, Architecture and Asian Studies. In those teams, they combined the approaches characteristic of their respective disciplines to investigate the nature of past urbanism in the giant low density urban complex of Greater Angkor and its significance for un-derstanding the development and the future of industrial-based, low density urbanism in a context of climate change. This was a add-on to the Masters in Architecture course Aleks is now complet-ing. Please join us in congratulating him on this achievement.

2014 Wrap up - Wow 2014 was a great year with a number of big events. MACI Games October 2014 saw Phoenix stu-dents enter into the Inaugural MACI Games. There were a number of schools that partici-pated and events spanned from Danta sparring, Taekwondo sparring to special events like dive cat-rolls and the high jump kick event, not to mention the sword sparring and archery events. We were all extremely proud of the Phoenix Students that entered and they did an AWESOME! job in all events. Our students displayed attributes of true black belts in training, a sense of fair play, integrity, respect and an indomitable spirit. Some students even overcame nerves in their first event.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2015

A s an i n s t r u c t o r I (Sambomnim Peter) was overwhelmed by the positive feedback by parents of our students and of other schools about the way our students conducted themselves and competed. What a great hon-our.

Our students all went away with a number of medals won. Well done and can’t wait for the 2015 events! In April of 2014 we also saw Instructor Peter re-ceive his Black Belt in Gongkwon Yusul with a number of other Instructors. Congratulations Sir! With addition of Gongkwon Yusul as part of our

school, we have already had the good fortune of having Grand-Master Kang visit Australia. In-

structor Peter had the privilege to host GM Kang from Korea and Master Yun from Ger-many. Whist they were here, GM Kang per-sonally presented Instructor Pe-ter with his Black Belt certificate and our Gongkwon Yusul school scroll. As part of GM Kang’s visit we were one of only a handful of schools to have seminars held by GM Kang and Master Yun.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2015

Black Belt or forever the white belt? Sometimes we forget as students and even as Black Belts that attaining your Black Belt cannot be treated like an event or a tick a box. Instead, it should be looked at as a lifestyle. I remember always being told, “you’re only as good as your last training session!” As such, there is training beyond a 1st Dan! Staying on the journey and work-ing towards higher Dan grades is a very rewarding experience. We have an awesome opportunity available us to continue our training beyond that in our Black Belt and instructor classes held by Grandmaster Ryoo. Always approach your training at whatever level you’re at as a white belt! Student of the Month Mr. Aleks Samardzic
