Social Skills
Teachers will re-visit the School Rules in class with students this week. These are: Be
Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be A Learner. Teachers have negotiated what this
looks, sounds and feels like for their particular year level. For example, Be a Learner for
a Prep student might be “listening while the Teacher is talking”. But for a Year 6/7
student it might mean “working towards individual learning goals”, “consistent effort” and
“staying on task”.
Farewell and Welcomes
We farewelled Mr Kunde our groundsman over the holidays. His new position is at
Sandgate State School which is closer to his home.
I am sure I speak for all staff, students and parents when I say
that we are really going to miss Terry and know that his
contribution to New Farm State School has been outstanding
and very much appreciated. Terry was involved in all aspects
of the school including: Building works, ground maintenance
and special celebration days. We wish him all the very best for
this new position.
Please give a warm welcome to Greg Walls who has replaced Terry. He has worked in a
number of schools and we are very pleased to have him on board.
NAIDOC Week Celebrations
NAIDOC Week is generally held in the first full week of July. It is a time to celebrate
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the
contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
We are pleased to be holding a special Assembly on Thursday 24 July at 9.00 am to
celebrate NAIDOC. Further information will be in next weeks newsletter.

Smart Choices Grant
Our school has been successful in its application for a Department of Education,
Training and Employment 2014 Smart Choices Grant valued at $1,000. The grant was
offered as part of the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health
(Healthy Children) for 2013-14.
The Smart Choices program aims to support schools to increase their capacity to
supply healthy, nutritious food and drinks across their whole school environment
including the school tuckshop.
This funding grant will allow us to creatively promote healthy food by:
setting up a herb and salad garden for the tuckshop
Offering frozen fruit ice-cream at some school events
Providing the tuckshop with some new cooking equipment so they can continue to prepare fresh healthy meals.
If you'd like to be involved with the implementation of the grant project (either by
helping to set up the garden, helping to prepare and store frozen fruit for events, or
volunteering in the tuckshop), please contact [email protected].
Thank you to Helen Fogarty, Nicole Chegwyn and Desiré Gralton for their time and
effort in getting the application submitted.
More information about Smart Choices is available http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/

BOOK WEEK AUGUST -
DRESS UP DAY It's time to start thinking
about a costume. Book Week
starts Monday 18 August and as
part of the celebrations, we
are asking children to come
dressed up as their favourite
book character. You might like
to start giving this some
thought. A hat or accessories
maybe a simple solution.
Please no swords, guns or plastic knives as accessories for costumes.
Stay tuned for more Book Week
information next term and in-
formation on The Festival a celebration of creativity and
literature at the end of next
term.
