The New Sun Times

From the Desk of Director Kathy Hull:

We’re entering a very busy couple of months. May is full of fun and interesting programs beginning with May 5th when our good friend and seasoned performer, Steve Kazlauskas, brings us a free afternoon of delightful entertainment. The Garden Club, the Walking Club, and the Kayakers will all be getting out in the open air in May and Environment Corps members will begin their Tuesday morning tours of Can-dlewood Lake to collect water samples. The Friends of the Senior Center will be bringing back their Granny’s Treasures Tag and Bake Sale on

June 11th and before that month is out we will have made plans for our famous Fourth of July Parade con-

tingent. Keep up with us on our website: www.newfairfieldseniorcenter.com and “like” us on Facebook:

The grandparent scam is so simple and so devious because it uses one of older

adults’ most reliable assets, their hearts. Scammers will place a call to an older person and when the mark picks up, they will say something along the lines of: “Hi Grandma, do you know who this is?” When the unsuspecting grandparent guesses the name of the grandchild the scammer most sounds like, the scammer has established a fake identity without having done a lick of background research. Once “in,” the fake grandchild will usually ask for money to solve some unexpected financial problem (overdue rent, pay-ment for car repairs, etc.) Other times it will be an officer of the law or court appointed attorney stating that the grandchild is in legal trouble or under arrest and then giving them a brief moment on the phone. Whatever the problem, it can be helped by a payment via Western Union or MoneyGram, neither of which always requires identification to collect. At the same time, the scam artist will beg the grandparent “please don’t tell my parents, they would kill me.”

If you suspect you’ve been the victim of a scam… Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to talk about it with someone you trust. You are not alone. Many well-educated

people with no cognitive impairment have been taken by these slick operators. There are people who can help and

doing nothing could only make it worse. (This scam warning has been added to the newsletter at the request of

one of our members who lost a large sum to this cruel and devious scam)
