As we look back on 2010 and the YMCA’s impact on our community, we realize that we spent time seeking a sense of normalcy in our lives and in our businesses. Many people turned to family, church, community and the YMCA looking for a place to belong. As the YMCA has for over 166 years globally and over 50 years in Gaston County, we welcomed people with open arms. We gave new opportunities to members and participants to be a part of something wonderful at the YMCA where relationships were developed, programs delivered, and memories were made.

The theme for this year’s annual report is “Let Us Re-introduce Ourselves.” For the first time in 43 years the National YMCA movement has unveiled a new brand strategy. The new strategy, which includes a new logo, is designed to help us tell the Y’s story and reach more people across our great nation. Our YMCA is not changing, we are defining our cause – strengthening the foundations of our community. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We are hopeful that this strategy will help us better communicate how we bring our Christian mission to life every day.

Our focus has been for over 51 years in Gaston County and will always be to nurture the potential of youth and teens for Youth Development, to improve the nation’s health and wellbeing for Healthy Living, and to give back and provide support to our neighbors through Social Responsibility. Your YMCA is still the same, Christian mission driven charitable organization that you have known and supported for many years.

In the 2009 Annual Report we stated that our goal is to grow from 4.5% in contributed support to 9% by 2013 and in 2010 our donations grew by 30%. THANK YOU! What an amazing accomplishment, and exactly the growth that we needed to meet our goal. We expect to grow again in 2011 and being selected by the YMCA of the USA as one of eight YMCA’s in the country to be a “Model YMCA for Best Practices in Turning Members to Donors” over the next two years, we will accomplish that goal. Actually, in the theme of the 2009 report, “Because of You,” we will be successful with that goal.

We sincerely thank you for your commitment of time, talent and treasure that you give to the YMCA so that we can do what we do best…serve others. Received childcare licensing certifications at many of our Afterschool Sites and the Central YMCA in order to make Afterschool and Summer Day Camp more accessible.

Increased the number of children served in Summer Day Camp and in Afterschool

Teens Changing Gaston County program was selected to be presented as a model Youth Philanthropy program at the YMCA’s International Financial Development Conference in Anaheim, California in April of 2011.

Parents’ Morning Out Preschool Program began at the Stowe YMCA and currently has 24 children enrolled.

Middle School Madness has increased in size and consistently has between 250 and 300 participants per session.

2010 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The ACHIEVE healthy environment and policy making program has been adopted as an official project of the Gaston Community Healthcare Commission.

The YMCA received Pepsico Grants totaling $10,000 for Healthy Living programs in our communities and workplaces.

The YMCA branches implemented year round “Welcome to Wellness” programs in order to engage and connect new members into wellness programs at the YMCA.

We held our first “Indoor Triathlon” at the Stowe YMCA in July the “Firecracker Indoor Triathlon – F.I.T.” where participants did a swim/bike/run competition.

There were over 2500 enrollees in the Activate Gaston online wellness program that was in its 3rd year and continued to be a valuable tool for individuals and corporations to track wellness goals.

BUILDING ACOMMUNITY

The YMCA received a Strengthening Families Grant to work with families on communication and problem solving.

Our Outreach programs expanded to begin “Y-Life” for middle school students who are learning the essence of leadership and life skills to prepare them for adulthood.

Our We Build People Campaign for financial assistance in 2010 raised $215,000 with over 275 volunteers and staff telling the community about the Y and asking people to make an investment in the YMCA’s mission and charitable purpose.

The YMCA served over 5,800 members and participants through financial assistance providing them the opportunity to benefit from the YMCA.

The Gaston County Family YMCA was selected to be a Model YMCA in Financial Development for Moving Members to Donors by the YMCA of the USA.

Contributions from members, friends and business partners raised during the 2010 annual We Build People Campaign are used to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
