Economic development projects will help spur rebound after unprecedented crisis

T hough we are currently in difficult times, I know

that Alabama will get through this crisis. Before the

coronavirus outbreak, our economy was prospering like never

before. I’m confident that Alabama will soon be on the road

to recovery and that economic growth will resume across the

state.

One reason for this optimism is the continued high

performance of Alabama’s economic development team. Their

efforts over the past few years have laid a solid foundation for

business expansion in the state. Last year was no different,

as illustrated by the results outlined in the New & Expanding

Industry Report, issued today by the Alabama Department of

Commerce.

In 2019, economic development projects brought over $7.1

billion in new capital investment to Alabama, one of the

highest totals ever recorded for the state. The projects

included commitments for 13,454 new jobs in a wide range of

industries across the state.

Having served as the assistant director of the Alabama

Development Office (now Commerce), I understand the vital

importance of this work in spurring future growth. Economic

development has been, and will remain, a central pillar of my

administration. This report assures me, when these dark days

pass, we will be positioned to recover our momentum.

Alabama’s economic development team plants seeds to sprout future growth

L ast November, Alabama’s economic development

team wrapped up what we had codenamed “Project

Acorn.” It was a major coup: Automaker Hyundai planned

to invest $410 million to expand its production lineup at

its Montgomery assembly plant, creating 200 jobs in the

process. Better still, this expansion was poised to set the

stage for future growth at the Alabama facility.

Hence, “Project Acorn.” I like the symbolism even more today

than I did on the sunny fall afternoon that the project was

announced on the steps of the Alabama Capitol.

For me, the idea of future growth sprouting from the seeds

we recently planted pertains to all of the efforts of Alabama’s

economic development team in 2019. In the midst of the

coronavirus crisis that dawned in 2020, it’s easy to lose sight

of this fact.

Make no mistake, the COVID-19 outbreak has placed

tremendous strains on Alabama’s economy and on the

ability of a great many Alabamians to earn a living. These are

challenging times, true. But I believe that there is recovery on

the other side of this crisis.

The 2019 New & Expanding Industry Report, issued today by

the Alabama Department of Commerce, captures the scope

of economic development activity recorded across the state

last year. The $7 billion-plus in new capital investment tied to

these Alabama projects will likely be a major catalyst in our

rebound.

Altogether, there were over 320 projects in 2019, generating

13,454 job commitments throughout the state, from urban

areas to rural locations.

I’m proud of the work that Alabama’s economic development

team has accomplished, and I look forward to the economic

recovery that will spring forth from these seeds we have

planted across our Great State.
