Check your system

At the heart of the amendment to the F-gas Regulation is a gradual phasing down of marketing HFCs. Marketing HFCs will be reduced from 100% in 2015 to 21% in 2030. In order to achieve this reduction, topping up refrigeration equipment filled with an HFC with a GWP in excess of 2500 (such as R404A and R507A) will be banned. Therefore, you should check which refrigerant is used in your air conditioning and refrigeration systems, as a defect in some cases might require replacement instead of repair. Old systems with a high content in CO2 equivalents also require up to twice-yearly leakage checks. New air conditioning and refrigeration systems are a lot more energy efficient, and quieter than older systems though. Heinen & Hopman is a HVAC specialist that uses solid equipment to install your air conditioning and refrigeration systems and offers worldwide service, maintenance and repair of the equipment. Whenever something is wrong with one of your systems, we always respond quickly and solution-oriented. Our service technicians are qualified and experienced. In addition, we are transparent about delivery times and we keep our promises. The Heinen & Hopman Group has a large established customer base, which values our service. With the unique principle of building and testing a chiller, disassemble, ship it in parts, built it together on board, you will avoid high costs for removing the machine or even cutting a hole in the yacht hull.

Introduction

On 20 May 2014, the European Union published the new F-gas Regulation in its official bulletin. As of 1 January 2015, this new F-gas Regulation will apply to all synthetic refrigerants, which come under the heading “halogenated hydrocarbons” (HFCs), as these have high global warming potential. These refrigerants can be found in a lot of air-conditioning equipment and cooling systems. R22 is one of the ozone depleting HFCs that may not be applied anymore in new systems as of 2004, according to agreements in the Kyoto protocol. Starting this year, refrigeration operations like refilling with HFCs aren’t allowed anymore either. As long as the systems work, there is nothing to worry about. In case of defects, the consequences depend on the type of refrigerant, which is shown on the equipment’s identification label or service receipts.

What we reccommend

Since the new F-gas regulations, which shall apply from 1 January 2015, state that R22 can’t be used in new cooling systems anymore, nor for refilling existing systems, a search for the best possible alternative has been a top priority at Heinen & Hopman. These regulations have been introduced because R22 is one of the harmful HFCs, which have high global warming potential.

To bypass this problem, we have been researching alternatives for R22. We have come to the conclusion that the best substitute would be Propane (R290). Propane has very similar thermodynamic behavior to R22 and it is a natural refrigerant. By using R290 as a refrigerant, the environmental impact is reduced, because R290 has no ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential), a very low GWP (Global Warming Potential) and an assumed equal energy efficiency to R22.

Propane is a flammable refrigerant though, and therefore cautious handling of the refrigerant is required. The most important safety concern is to ensure that in case of a leakage the refrigerant doesn’t ignite. Therefore, the solution developed by Heinen & Hopman is to place the cooling system inside a casing, so when a leakage occurs, the possible explosive atmosphere is located inside the casing. By using an ATEX fan, the casing can be ventilated so that the mixture of gas and air can be discharged outside the casing.

In order to ensure the safest systems possible, Heinen & Hopman is still researching the application of Propane until all risks are covered.

Benefits of the new propane chiller

Heinen & Hopman is constantly on the lookout for innovative solutions that can help us and our clients contibute to a more sustainable world. Because we strongly believe it is important to be able to live in a world with optimal environmental conditions. Not just for us but for our descendants and the next generations to come. That’s why we take our responsibilities regarding safety and environment very seriously. The propane chiller meets this conditions. The chiller is highly efficient and it reduces costs.
