By using GPS tracking, companies can address key demands of today’s marketplace:
• Take it out of the mail
• Alternative / Commercial delivery
• “Do more with less”
• Improve operational efficiencies– Network performance
– Benchmarking
– Quality Control (Timely Deliveries, Reduce Complaints)
• Increasing need for internal controls, audit requirements, and real time reporting
A Solution … With A Technology Answer
N.E.A.C.E Conference
A Solution for DistributionPublishers need new tools to reduce costs and manage the day-to-day activities.
GPS Solution:• Contractors/Carriers carry GPS-enabled devices
• A Web-based management system allows for oversight and creation of defined contractor routes
• GPS data records produce:
– Coverage of route
– Delivery data (time, date, speed, etc.)
– Internal Controls
• Integration with circulation systems such as DSI, DTI & DISCUS.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know……..
• When is the route being serviced?
• Has the truck reached the distribution center?
• Are single copy outlets being serviced properly?
• Is my TMC being delivered?
How do I get this done …. I am a staff of 1 !

GPS Definitions
Breadcrumb: A visual depiction of driving patterns and directions for a particular carrier.
Geo-Fences: Area depicts a specific geographical location based on publisher’s distribution network- Routes (i.e. Zip, Sub-Zip, etc.)
Ping Rate: Frequency of communication from device for location (30 seconds, 1 minute, etc.)
Waypoints: A sampling of addresses (lat/long) that represent delivery locations within a route/fence.
Coverage: Calculation based on the number of waypoints triggered versus available on the route.
N.E.A.C.E Conference
A Feature Rich Mapping & GPS Solution
Leverages waypoints to ensure route completion times and locations
Driving sequence, time, and mileage
Visual verification of route activity, not delivery

What Can GPS Be Used For …….
Geo Fencing & Breadcrumb Trails Start & Stop Times Location Mileage & Time
Waypoints Do Not Deliver Complaints TMC / Sunday Select Recycling Locations

Verification ComponentThe system also provides a track and trace that ensures piece are delivered to the right house by utilizing technology and fieldwork by individuals in real-time.

Capabilities of GPS Technology• Geo-Coding / Time Stamp Validation
GPS and date/time information can not be altered
• Route Structure Contractor route assignment
Contractor district assignments
Routes by ZIP, Sub-ZIP, or custom to the newspaper/distributor needs
• Waypoints Weighting capabilities
Different types of products can be distinguished (Sunday Select vs TMC)
Notification by delivery time
Dynamic modification of waypoints
• Visual Route Coverage Ability to view route/network coverage in real-time utilizing mapping software

Does this work in real life?
• Trucking and Distribution– Newspaper equipped trucks with GPS technology to monitor delivery times to
distribution centers and drop off locations.
– Provided automated alerts to distribution center personal and managers on status of truck.
– Eliminated the need to call to find the where the product
– Helped fleet performance through basic fleet management (miles, idle time, speeding, etc.)
• Single Copy and Bulk – Publisher provided each vehicle/carrier with GPS technology
– Lost Sales- high traffic locations were being serviced at the end of the route.
– Quantify how much time to service large locations (grocery stores).
– Can include automated laydown sheets with inventory information.
N.E.A.C.E Conference
Does this work in real life?
• Paid Circulation– Redelivery
– Complaints
– Geo-coded single copy draw & returns information
– Start & Stop times … was the product distributed during the delivery window.
• Non-Paid Circulation– Waypoint coverage helps establish distribution characteristics
– Manage to large delivery windows that could be up to 72 hours
– Is the proper areas being delivered
– Do not deliver locations can be assigned
– Recycling Centers
– Know more about what is going on

Return On Investment
Since publishers are only beginning to use the product, a quantifiable amount is still yet “to be determined”. However, some of the key benefits will eventually turn into savings and revenue such as:
• Negotiation Tool - system allows to capture key metrics that influence delivery fees/rate
• Best Practices - data usable to measure market performance and allows for benchmarking
• Do More With Less - allows for more analytical reporting regardless of staff size
• Postage Savings - take product out of the mail and deliver efficiently through distribution network
• Distribution Company – deliver more than just your newspaper
• Auditing - a more efficient audit can be conducted due to availability of data
