To my fellow Fire Chiefs and brother/sister fi refi ghters of New England and beyond. I’d like to personally invite each of you to the 2016 New England Association of Fire Chief Conference Expo. It’s an exciting time for the New England Association of Fire Chiefs as we continue to confront new challenges, remaining always adaptable, motivated and responsive to the fi re service needs and bringing forth a conference you will not want to miss. Our organization is confronting many changes in the fi re service conference arena. We’re trying very hard to meet these changes during a time of nation-wide trends in networking using social media, which our fi re service leaders fi nd to be challenging times.
The world of Fire, Rescue & EMS is an exciting area in which to work/study/play, we’ll continue to bring inspired people together in forums like this to ensure our Conference and Exposition remains at the cutting edge. Check out the educational program.
I’d like to give you an idea of what you can expect and what we hope to achieve over the 4 days of our conference. We have 3 full days of educational opportunities for all levels of the fi re & rescue services. We have arranged Friday and Saturday classes to repeat themselves so you have options on some great breakout sessions both days. Our goal was to appeal to the fi refi ghter up through the Fire Chief. I am pleased with what we have accomplished. We have sold out the exhibit fl oor with vendors showing the latest in equipment and technology. We have our annual meetings on Wednesday, our annual memorial service to pay tribute to our fallen comrades who have gone before us on Thursday, followed by our Presidential Celebration in a more relaxed environment with Country Star Billy Dean performing while we eat and socialize. The networking continues on Friday with our Corporate Sponsor, Shipman’s Fire Equipment holding an evening full of Food, Beverages, Live Band, Dancing and Fun!
After enjoying the exhibit fl oor or attending the educational opportunities including the two keynote speakers, which are well known across the country., take a little down time and enjoy the networking rooms and Foxwoods Resort and Casino. Explore and enjoy, a chance at the casino, shopping at the Tanger Outlets on site, or just relax and recharge at the pool.
Before I close, I’d like to thank each of you in advance for attending our conference and bringing your enthusiasm to our New England gathering. Throughout this conference, I ask you to stay engaged, keep proactive and help us shape the future of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs. I hope to see you in Connecticut in June.

Keni Thomas...In the summer of 1993 Staff Sergeant Keni Thomas was deployed to Mogadishu Somalia with the 3rd Ranger Battalion as part of an elite special operations package called Task Force Ranger. Their mission was to fi nd and capture a criminal warlord named Mohammed Farrah Aidid. On the 3rd of October, Keni and his fellow rangers distinguished themselves in an eighteen hour fi re-fi ght that would later be recounted in the highly successful book and movie “Blackhawk Down”. Nineteen Americans gave their lives and 78 were wounded in the worst urban combat seen by US troops since WWII.
A powerful speaker, Keni captivates audiences from beginning to end as he tells the incredible story of extraordinary individuals and how
they fought to bring each other home. Drawing from his experiences on the battlefi eld, Keni inspires people to achieve greatness by stressing the importance of outstanding leadership at every level, even if the only person you are leading is yourself. His message of “Train as you fi ght - Fight as you train and Lead By Example” epitomizes the Ranger motto “Rangers Lead the Way!”
Keni sums it up like this, “Leadership has never been about the rank or the position you hold. It’s about the example you set. There are people to your left and to your right who are counting on you and its up to you to deliver. But you will only be as good as you prepared yourself to be.”
Ray McCormack... Lines and Ladders LeadershipJoin Lt McCormack as he explores how to be an effective fi reground leader no matter which assignment you’re tasked with.
Ray McCormack is a Lieutenant with FDNY assigned to Ladder 28 in Harlem. He served over ten years as a Lieutenant in Engine 69. He is the co creator of Urban Firefi ghter Magazine and is on the Editorial board of Fire Engineering and FDIC. He delivered the keynote address at FDIC in 2009 “True Values of a Firefi ghter” and is the author of the long running digital column Tactical Safety for Firefi ghters.
