This course may be offered in conjunction with other rigorous science courses, or may serve as an opportunity to explore a topic of special interest. CONTACT: MS. SILVA Intermediate Guitar This is an elective course for intermediate guitarists who have some experience on the instrument and are able to read standard music notation. Students will learn open chords, power chords, movable chords, single note (melody) playing, accompaniment techniques, and a variety of playing techniques and styles, including both pick style and finger style approaches to the guitar. The course also includes music fundamentals, theory, songs, performances, listening, improving and learning to read standard music notation as well as tablature. The main focus of this class is ensemble performance and competition. There is also an emphasis on solo classical guitar performance. Prerequisites: Passed Beginning Guitar with at least B average or audition for Mr. Meda. CONTACT: MR. MEDA Mock Trial 3 This course will prepare students to participate in the statewide mock trial competition conducted annually. Students will explore various topics relating to the function of the court system of New Mexico. These topics will include New Mexico court system structure, jurisdiction, and the difference between criminal and civil law. In preparation for the competition, the students will use critical thinking skills to analyze physical evidence and witness affidavits. They will work together as a class to construct sound legal arguments supporting and attacking both sides of the given case. The students will write opening and closing statements, as well as direct and cross examination questions. Students will be selected to participate in the competition as either witnesses or attorneys. Through the preparation and trials students will become familiar with trial procedure, rules of evidence and courtroom decorum. Students who enroll in the course should have an interest in the criminal justice system and a desire to use public speaking skills. CONTACT: MS. GRAVES Early Childhood Careers III First three weeks will prepare students to do a set age- level rotation determined by teachers. This will include taking the Accuplacer for San Juan College admittance. The next six weeks students will go to the site location for work experience involving pre-school age children. The last nine weeks will require elementary grade school experience. Students will be be able to concurrently enroll in dual credit at San Juan College. CONTACT: MS. FERRER Marketing Work Experience (Co-op) Recommended for grades 11-12. This course provides opportunities for students enrolled previously or concurrently in a marketing class to gain “real world” attitudes, skills, and knowledge. This experience would allow students school release time for completion of cooperative work experiences. The student, teacher, and employer will set goals cooperatively: classroom attendance related to classroom training experience and related coursework are integral parts of the marketing work- based experience. AP Seminar

AP Seminar is the first course offered in the AP Capstone program. AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Students learn how to: investigate academic and real-world topics from multiple perspectives, gather and analyze information from various sources, develop credible and valid evidence-based arguments, conduct research and evaluate evidence, collaborate in teams, and communicate using appropriate media. The course centers around a team project and presentation, individual research based essay and presentation and an end of course AP-exam. Students who complete the AP Seminar have the option of completing AP Research (offered beginning Fall 2016) and earning the AP Capstone graduation designation.

Communication Exploration

Course surveys an array of topics to various methods of communication such as drafting, photography, graphic arts/printing, commercial art, telecommunications, and electronic and computer aided communication. These courses may serve as a basic introduction to the methods, tools, and techniques of these areas.

Advanced Computer Projects

Pre-requisite: 3D Animation or Intro to Film Making for Grades 11-12. The objective of this course is to develop three-dimensional and animated graphic design projects. Students use software such as Photoshop, Blender, Cinema 4D and other design software for paper, Web, and other electronic publishing. The emphasis of the course is to have students work in teams to create various projects. This class intends to simulate real-world production team situations. The production teams will create extended and long format animations. Students will also understand how to create effective storyboards, animations, and other filmmaking techniques.

Health Care Occupations Career Exploration

Course designed for students with a possible interest in medicine or the allied health fields. Health Care Occupations Career Exploration courses expose students to the opportunities available in a variety of occupational clusters within the health care industry (such as dental care, general and administrative services, lab technology, nursing, therapy, and vision care).

Musical Theater Grades 10-12 ($30) Prereq-One yr music/theater class & audition. The purpose of this course is to enable students to participate in varied aspects of musical theatre, with special attention to the fundamentals of voice production, stage movement, acting, characterization, dance and technical aspects of a musical production. The student will be introduced to the foundations of musical theatre through the use of exercises, assignments, prepared musical selections, play/concert attendance and written assignments. This class may require students to participate in extra rehearsals and performances beyond the school day. Participation is mandatory as this is a performance-based class.
