New Dynamics in the Labour Market: Self-employment, Underemployment and Digital Economy

Date: Huelva, June 14th, 2019, 17:00h Venue: Puerto Antilla Grand Hotel (Lubre Room)

Introduction

This workshop constitutes an event of scientific dissemination in which scholars and practitioners specially interested in the Economics of self-employment will present and discuss some theoretical and empirical findings on some of the recent trends and dynamics in the labour markets related with chronic underemployment, the emergence of new forms of self-employment and the characteristics of the platform workers. It takes the relay of previous workshops, and offers an excellent opportunity for researchers and practitioners with interest in the field to profit from discussion and lively exchange of ideas. Participants

André van Stel is a Senior Research Fellow at Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), and a Research Professor at Kozminski University (Warsaw, Poland). Former employers include Panteia/EIM, Erasmus University Rotterdam and University of Amsterdam, Cranfield School of Management and Max Planck Institute of Economics. He holds a PhD in

Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on the economics of self-employment and entrepreneurship. André is Associate Editor of the International Review of Entrepreneurship.

Susana Romero Román es Directora General de Trabajo Autónomo y Economía Social de la Consejería de Empleo, Formación y Trabajo Autónomo de la Junta de Andalucía. Es licenciada en Derecho por la Universidad de Barcelona y Titulada Universitaria Superior en Mediación por la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid. Desde 2002 ejerce de abogada desarrollando su

labor profesional como especialista en mediación y resolución de conflictos, así como en Derecho Civil. En 2016 se incorpora a la Asesoría Jurídica de la Federación Nacional de Asociaciones de Trabajadores Autónomos (ATA), de la que ha sido su directora.

Begoña Cueto holds a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Oviedo and is Associate Professor at the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Oviedo. His field of research is labour economics, in particular, the evaluation of active labour market policies, self-employment and entrepreneurship, as well as the situation of vulnerable groups in the labor

market. She has published her research in scientific journals such as Applied Research in Quality of Life, International Journal of Manpower, Papers in Regional Science, Applied Economics, Annals of Regional Science, Spanish Public Finance or Journal of Applied Economics, among others.

Herbert J. Schuetze is Associate Professor in Economics at University of Victoria. Dr. Schuetze's research has focused on issues related to self-employment. The topics he has examined include: the role of taxes and economic conditions, male-female differences in self-employment dynamics, income tax non-compliance, the role of labour market policies and

immigrant self-employment. Ignacio González Vázquez holds a degree in Economics from the University of Seville and a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Missouri. He obtained the mention cum laude in his doctorate from the University of Seville in June 2011 with a paper entitled "The change of orientation of community social policy: from the Welfare State to the Welfare Society". He

is an official of the European Commission, where he is currently working on several research projects related to social and employment policies in the Joint Research Center.
