New Distribution System Interest in deepseabedmining has revived: Expert
"Interest in the mineral resources of the
deep seabed has experienced a revival in recentyears. Unlike that of the late 1960s and 1970s,current interest is based on scientific research
and economic understanding, rather thanunbridled speculation based on a limited dataand underdeveloped technological capability ofpast," said eminent geologist ProfG S Roonwal.
ProfRoonwal, the former Head of GeologyDepartment at Delhi University was deliveringProf K K Mathur Memorial Lecture on 'DeepSeabed Mining, the second Time Around' duringGeology Day Celebrations on 6 October.Geology Department had organised thisfunction to mark its 87th foundation day.
"This outlook for development of deepseabed mineral must give consideration tocompeting land-based resources, as well futuremarkets for hard minerals," he said. "Also ofinterest is the location of resource deposit andthe national and international legal andregulatory regime for their development.
These factors will affect the outlook for
development of seabed mineral resources interms of their potential, prospect andlimitations. "
ProfRoonwal, also chairman of Federationof Indian Mineral Industries, added, "greaterdemands for mineral depends upon economicgrowth and increase industrial developmentaround the world. The initial period ofcommercial interest in seabed minerals was cutshort as the growth rate of metal demanddeclined when developed countries increasinglyshifted to post-industrial economics."
"New sources of minerals and increasedefficiency have kept to growth of mineraldemand flow for many years, but this pattern isbeginning to change," he said.
"Economic growth in developing countriesspecially China, India and Brazil and the formerSoviet block will tighten the market and pushprices for industrial and precious metals tohigher levels, as we are witnessing today.Changing patterns of economic growth, newdemands in response to the growth of electronicsector, developments in automotive technologyand long lead times for development of newmines and processing facilities, all contribute toa long term outlook for tighter supplies andrising prices," he said.
"Large land-based mineral resourcesassure that existing mineral will be continue tobe a source of metals, but eventually it will benecessary to develop new greenfield deposits,"he said. "Trends in metal use and mineralproduction will support serious consideration ofthe commercial development of deep seabedmineral deposits," he added.Earlier, Head of Geology Department, Prof R NTiwari welcomed the guests whereas ProfRajesh Srivastava remarked about Geology Daycelebrations.
Foundation Stone forconstruction of new 132/33 KV
Sub Substation LaidThe Vice-Chancellor Professor
Panjab Singh laid down the foundation stone forconstruction of 132/33 KV Sub Station ofBanaras Hindu University on 6 Oct. Aftercommissioning and interconnection of the substation with UPPCL grid through two 33 KVunderground cable, BHU will get the reliableand improved power supply. Commissioning ofthis 10Crore project will not only help in gettingrid of rostering, reduction in expenditure on D Gsets and power-loss in old system but wouldimprove the availability of power supply toBHU. Maintenance cost will also decreasehelping total cost recovery within 6 to 8 years. The Power Grid Corporation of India isexecuting the Project.Rector, Prof. S Lele, Director, IT,Prof. S NUpadhayay, Dean, Faculty of Engineering,Prof JN Sinha, Director, Institute of AgriculturalSciences, Prof Shivraj Singh, Dean of Students,Prof V K Kumra etc. were present on theoccasion.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor PanjabSingh inaugurated New Power Distribution
System ofBanaras Hindu University in a simpleceremony on 3 August. 11 MW distribution
system has been created. The Power gridCorporation of India has successfully
implemented this system in the campus. 11Distribution sub stations have been created in the
campus replacing old one.

He said that with development many thing leftback and many thing take place instead of themand said that losing job by Americans due tooutsourcing shouldbe seen in this context.
Dr Dossani said that nearly 80 lakh Americanschange their jobs every year which indicatingflexible attitude of theAmericans.
Praising young India talents, he said that there isneed of more supportive educational system andhigh skill for Indian students to meet the UStalent so that they are merely provedcomplementary to US students.
Dr. Vijaya Khandavilli of the US EducationalFoundation in India said that Indian students aremore subjects focused, while they should keepbroad knowledge so that they could open theiroption in other sector also. Praising USeducation system she said that US educationalinstitute provide opportunity to students to getmore practical knowledge and Indian instituteshould also provide such opportunities so thatstudent couldget more expertise.
Dr. Khandavili said that except other thingeducation should be student centric andinteractive rather than present education patternand added that motive of education should bedeveloping independent thinking and problemsolution abilities in students.
Prof S Lele, BHU Rector, speaking as a chiefguest, said that in new millennium India isemerging as economic power in the world butwithout imparting the benefit to poor, developmentwould be meaningless.
He said that onone hand opportunity is knocking
the door, while on the other hand widening gapbetween poor and rich is emerging as threat tothe nation.

Cloning useful for brain damagetreatment, says DNA scientist
Noted DNA scientist and director ofthe Centre for Cellular and MolecularBiology (Hyderabad), Padmashree ProfLalji Singh said that human cloning wasuseful in various applications. He wasdelivering the keynote address on'bioethical, issues of genomic research andcloning, during a day-long workshop onBioethics at the Mechanical EngineeringDepartment of Institute of Technology on18 December. Malaviya Centre for ethicsand Human Values had organized theworkshop.
Prof Lalji Singh said, human cloningcould be used for producing stem cells fortreatment of damage in brain and alsoproducing a reservoir of spare parts"Besides, human cloning was also useful indisorder of blood cells, bone cells, cartilagecells, liver cells and skin cells etc.," he said.
He said human cloning could help inunderstanding the process of ageing. Healso discussed in detail about variousapplications of cloning of animals."Animals on the verge of extinction couldbe multiplied by cloning," he added.
"Therapeutic cloning presents newscientific prospects. This includes studyingdevelopment of anomalies and determinewhich treatment would be the mostappropriate," he said. He also talked aboutusing transgenic animals fo} production ofpharmaceuticals and Xeno-transplant(growing pig with human genes for organtransplant).
Talking about ethics in biology, ProfSingh raised various questions such as -should we tell the patient and/or his/herfamily members about geneticpredisposition to diseases, health insurancefor those who are at genetic risk, employability of those who are geneticallypredisposed (at risk) to certain diseases.
He said ethics were required in biologybut it was still under consideration as towhat should be actual face of such ethics.Emeritus Professor at Zoology Departmentof BHU Padmashree Prof M S Kanungopresided over the lecture.
