AMY-JACKSON NEW DELHI: Isuzu Motors India launched seven-seater SUV MU-X recently in India. The diesel powered vehicle comes with various features including hill start assist and a ground clearance of 220 mm. The two-wheel drive variant of the SUV is priced at Rs 23.99 lakh while the four-wheel drive trim is tagged at Rs 25.99 lakh. "Isuzu globally is renowned for making tough reliable and fuel efficient vehicles that are engineered for life. The MU-X embodies these characteristics," Isuzu Motors Managing Executive Officer Hiroshi Nakagawa told reporters in New Delhi. The model would be built at the company's manufacturing plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, he added. "India is a key market for Isuzu globally and is also a future hub of our global manufacturing operations. We will continue to invest in the Indian operations," Nakagawa said. The SUV, which will be com- peting with the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, also comes with advanced safety features like electronic stability control and emergency brake assist. TORONTO - Canadian existing home sales fell 1.7% in April from record level set in the previous month, but remain still fairly elevated. The bigger mover was a 10% increase in listings in the month, which helped bring down the sales-to-listings ratio to 60.1 from 67.3 in the prior month. While the market tightness eased substantially last month, the Canadian market as a whole is still in seller's territory, albeit marginally. With market conditions still relatively tight, the average sales price was up 10.6% year-over-year and the quality adjusted MLS was up a stunning 19.8%. Home prices were rising sharply for all types of housing, with price growth ranging from 21.8% y/y for single-detached homes to 18.8% y/y for apartments. The details are largely in the regional story. The drop in sales was driven by markets across southern Ontario (led by a 6.7% decline in the GTA) and Quebec (sales were down both in Montreal and Quebec City), while most other markets posted a modest increase. Existing home sales in the Greater Vancouver Area are starting to shake off impacts of last year's changes to provincial and federal housing policy, but remain still well off last year's peak levels. The biggest increase in listings was also in the GTA (+36%), which helped bring the sales- to-listings ratio well within balanced territory. Home price growth, however, remained fairly sticky, with the GTA posting the hottest price growth across the country. The MLS HPI was up 31% year-over-year. However, most other markets in southern Ontario and mainland BC remained the tightest across the country. The months of inventory held below 2 months in Ontario and 3 months in BC, compared to the national average of 4.2. As such, home price growth ranged across the country from a still hot 11% y/y in Vancouver to over 20% y/y in key markets in Southern Ontario. Price growth was 4% to 5% in markets east of the GTA, and then marginally negative to flat in the Prairies. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MAY CUT ALZHEIMER'S RISK TORONTO, (IANS) Researchers have found that regular ex- ercise may help decrease risk of Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, characterised by progres- sive neurodegeneration that results in memory loss, com- promised physical ability and loss of independence. In a study, published in the journal BMC Public Health, the team of researchers also confirmed that regular physical activity may improve the performance of daily activities for people afflicted with Alzheimer's. The researchers reviewed data from more than 150 research articles about the impact of physical activity on people with Alzheimer's. Some of the work explored how physical activity improves the patient's quality of life and the others examined the risk of developing Alzheimer's based on the amount of activity in which an individual participated. The panel concluded that regular physical activity im- proves activities of daily living and mobility in older adults with Alzheimer's and may improve general cognition and balance. They also established that older adults not diagnosed with Alzheimer's who are physically active, were significantly less likely to develop the disease compared to people who were inactive.

ARTIFICIAL HEART VALVE MAYCAUSE SLEEP LOSSLONDON, (IANS) Nearly one in four patients with an ar tificialhear t valve are facing disturbance in their sleep, owing to theticking sound produced by the machine, researchers say. Chronicsleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems like heartdisease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes etc.The study showed that because the noise produced by the mechanical heartvalve was audible to them or others, the patients tend to avoid socialising, which in turn can affect their quality of life as well as increase the risk ofdeveloping depression and anxiety."Almost one-fourth of patients said that the sound of their mechanical heartvalve makes it difficult for them to sleep. Most of us need a quiet environmentwhen we are going to sleep and these patients found it hard to ignore thenoise from the valve," said lead author Kjersti Oterhals, researcher atHaukeland University Hospital in Norway. "For some patients the closingsound of their mechanical heart valve reduces their quality of life, disturbstheir sleep, causes them to avoid social situations, and leads todepression and anxiety," Oterhals added. For the study, presented at the EuroHear tCare 2017 in Sweden, the team involved 245 patients (average 60 years old and 76 percent men) who had undergone aor tic valve replacement and hadreceived a mechanical valve at Haukeland University Hospital.Nearly 23 per cent said the valve sound disturbed them duringsleep and 9 per cent said it disturbed them during the day.Grilled or microwaved

mushrooms may be healthierLONDON, (IANS) Love mushrooms? Boiling or deep fry-ing may destroy its nutritional profile while microwavingor grilling them would help preserve its antioxidant ca-pacity and other health properties, researchers say. Mush-rooms are rich in dietary fibre, vitamins (B1, B2, B12, C, D and E)and minerals such as zinc or selenium, low in calories and fat, aswell as important source of betaglucans - biologically active com-pounds with potential medicinal value. The results, published in the International Journal of Food Sciencesand Nutrition, revealed that frying induced more severe losses inprotein, ash, and carbohydrates content but increased thefat and energy. Boiling improved the total glucans contentby enhancing the betaglucans fraction. A significant de-crease was detected in the antioxidant activity especiallyafter boiling and frying, while grilled and microwavedmushrooms reached higher values of antioxidant activ-ity. "Frying and boiling treatments produced more severelosses in proteins and antioxidants compounds, probablydue to the leaching of soluble substances in the water orin the oil, which may significantly influence the nutri-tional value of the final product" said Irene Roncero fromMushroom Technological Research Center of La Rioja (CTICH) inSpain. Conversely, when mushrooms were grilled or microwaved,"the content of polyphenol and antioxidant activity increased signifi-cantly, and there are no significant losses in nutritional value ofthe cooked mushrooms", Roncero added.

SAFEGUARD TATTOOS FROM SUMMER EVILSNEW DELHI, (IANS) Summer season is the perfect time to flaunt your tattoo in sleeveless tees, shorts and beachwear. However, with the scorching sun, it becomes all the more impor tant to takecare of your tattoo and the skin. After all, you don't want to be attacked by skin infections, allergiesand heat rashes. Rohit Batra, dermatologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Vivek Mehta, dermatolo-gist at Pulastya's Cadle Skin Laser Clinic, Neha Mittal, aesthetic and cosmetic physician atDermaworld Skin and Hair Clinics, suggest how to protect tattoos during summer:* Showing off the tattoo is one of the key reasons for getting a tattoo done but at the same time it isalso the main cause that it fades away. The sun's UV rays will quickly reduce the beauty of thetattoo, making it appear dull, resulting in colour spreading or scarring. Therefore, sun protection is impor tant. Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or above) generously on thetattoo. Make sure that you do this soon after you get inked. Ten to 14 days after getting a tattoo done, limit your sun exposure and apply sunscreen. Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.* No matter how difficult it is, control your urge to flaunt your tattoo for at least initial days ofrecovery in order to avoid any kind of infection. Scarring, sunburn and skin problems like Mela-noma are other issues that may affect your skin.* Avoid bathtubs, hot water and ocean or pool water as they may contain a harmful chemical whichmight cause irritation, allergy or other skin issues.* It is quite normal to feel itchy and sensitive on the area of the tattoo especially after a few daysof a new tattoo. Therefore, use a moisturizer with an anti-oxidant formula.* If you are planning to go on vacation after getting a tattoo done to places with beaches, oceans orswimming pools then you must wait for 14 to 20 days to have your tattoo recover properly, asstaying too much in water can also hamper the healing and can damage your expensive tattoo.

Just one alcoholic drink a dayups breast cancer risk: StudyWASHINGTON, (IANS) Drinking just one glass of wine or otheralcoholic drink a day can increase breast cancer risk, reveals amajor new repor t that analysed data on 12 million women. Butvigorous exercise such as running or fast bicycling can helpdecreases the risk of both pre- and post-menopausal breastcancers, said the repor t by the American Institute for CancerResearch (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)."With this comprehensive and up-to-date repor t the evidence isclear: Having a physically active lifestyle, maintaining a healthyweight throughout life and limiting alcohol - these are all stepswomen can take to lower their risk," said Anne McTiernan, leadauthor of the repor t and a cancer prevention exper t at the FredHutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle, Washington.Researchers systematically collated and evaluated the scien-tific research worldwide on how diet, weight and exercise affect breastcancer risk in the first such review since 2010.The report analysed 119 studies, including data on 12 million women and260,000 cases of breast cancer. The report found strong evidence thatdrinking the equivalent of a small glass of wine or beer a day (about 10grams alcohol content) increases pre-menopausal breast cancer risk byfive per cent and post-menopausal breast cancer risk by nine per cent. For vigorous exercise, pre-menopausal women who were the most activehad a 17 per cent lower risk and post-menopausal women had a 10 per centlower risk of developing breast cancer compared to those whowere the least active. While there are many factors that womencannot control, the good news from this repor t is that all womencan take steps to lower their breast cancer risk, said AliceBender from American Institute for Cancer Research.

A WRISTBAND THAT CANRECOGNISE HUMAN EMOTIONS

NEW YORK, (IANS) An MIT engineer has developed a wristband withsignificant potential to recognise changes in human emotions, thebrain as well as behaviour, especially during seizures caused byepilepsy. The wearable technology has an automated machine learn-ing method that can detect compulsive seizures by combining mea-sures of electrodermal activity on the wrist with measures of motionthrough a sweat response."The skin is purely innervated by the sympathetic branch of the auto-nomic nervous system," said Rosalind Picard, engineer and researcherat Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Sympathetic activa-tion occurs when experiencing excitement or stress, whether physi-cal, emotional or cognitive. "We can observe increases in sympa-thetic brain activation by monitoring subtle electrical changes acrossthe surface of the skin," Picard added.Seizures occur when there are abnormal, excessive or synchronousneuronal activity, and can cause convulsions evidenced by violentshaking and loss of control and consciousness. When some regionsof the brain, such as those involved with anxiety, pain, stress andmemory are activated during a seizure, they can elicit patterns ofelectrical changes in the skin. The wrist-worn detector is now more than 96 per cent accurate for

detecting convulsive seizures. While the researchers have not dem-onstrated detection of non-convulsive seizures, 42 percent to 86 per-cent of non-convulsive, complex par tial seizures also have signifi-cant electrodermal responses, the researchers said, in the paper presented atthe American Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Pennsylvania.

Here's why girls should nevertake diet pillsLONDON, (IANS) Is your teenaged daughter popping pillsto shed weight? Beware, she may be at an increasedrisk of harming hormones, growth as well as mentalhealth, researchers warned. The findings showed thatdiet pills are unsafe for all ages but especially for teen-agers due to the presence of toxic chemicals in thesupplements. These pills interfere with the body systems and result innutritional deficiencies, par ticularly of iron and calcium, the researchers said. "In growing children and teenag-ers, even a marginal reduction in energy intake can beassociated with growth deceleration," dailymail.co.ukquoted the Canadian Pediatric Society researchers assaying.Weight loss pills are adver tised as the quick solution toshedding pounds and obtaining the per fect figure, butthey come with potentially dangerous side effects, in-cluding increased hear t rate, fainting, unusual bleedingand hear t attacks. Diet pills can also cause and, in ex-treme cases they can rip apar t the stomach lining andeven lead to death, the study showed. Fur ther, research-ers from the University of Minnesota said a star tling 63per cent of teenage girls use "unhealthy weight controlbehaviours" to maintain a slim shape. About 22 per centof teenage females use "very unhealthy weight controlbehaviours".

Don't feed fruit juice in child'sfirst year, say pediatriciansWASHINGTON, (IANS) Parents should take note thatbreast milk or infant formula is sufficient for infants andchildren should not be offered fruit juice, which lacksdietary fiber and may contribute to excessive weight gain,at all in the first year, according to exper ts. Fruit juiceoffers no nutritional benefit to children under age 1 andshould not be included in their diet, according to a newpolicy statement issued by the American Academy ofPediatrics."Parents may perceive fruit juice as healthy, but it is nota good substitute for fresh fruit and just packs in moresugar and calories," said co-author of the statementMelvin Heyman, Fellow of the American Academy ofPediatrics (FAAP). "Small amounts in moderation arefine for older kids, but are absolutely unnecessary forchildren under 1," Heyman said. Over past years, theAcademy advised against offering fruit juice to childrenunder the age of 6 months, but has expanded that timeframe to include the entire first year of life.
