Center for Language Study’s DILS and Fields Programs

The Yale Center for Language Study is now accepting applications for spring semester study for its Fields Program and its Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program. The deadline for applying to either program for spring semester study is October 15th. The Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program gives you the opportunity to study a language that is not currently taught in a Yale classroom. The Fields Program gives you the opportunity to pursue advanced-level language study within the context of your academic area of focus. Both are non-credit programs, open to all registered Yale students (undergraduate, graduate and professional). In each program, students work with a Language Partner—a native speaker of the target language (not a formal instructor)--in two 1-hour sessions for 12 weeks. The sessions aim to develop linguistic and cultural competence through active conversation and practice of what you are studying independently. With a limited number of slots available, a selection committee reviews all applications for their merit and appropriateness, and notifies students of its decisions within four to six weeks after the application deadline. Details on each program and how to apply can be found here: Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) https://cls.yale.edu/dils Fields Program https://cls.yale.edu/fields Please note that all applications must be received by the application deadline (this includes applications for continued study from current DILS or Fields students).

Yale Degree Audit

Yale Degree Audit (YDA) is a tool that tracks your progress toward the bachelor’s degree. YDA is

located on the Academics tab of Student Information System (SIS).

YDA displays the Yale College degree requirements that you have already completed and those that

are still pending. A “Look Ahead” feature shows you how future course enrollment might apply

toward your degree.

New Haven Day of Caring

This coming Saturday, October 13th is the New Haven Day of Caring. On the 13th, Yale students will serve the

community of New Haven alongside a diverse array of New Havenites. By painting murals and planting trees,

we will spend a day giving back and getting to know the city we call home.

The following registration link allows interested parties to sign up for a two-hour shift, and these are spread

throughout the day, so folks can coordinate their service with their schedule. Registration closes on

Wednesday.

CCE Hiring for 2019

Interested in becoming a CCE? The Communication and Consent Educators are a diverse, creative

group of undergraduates drawn from across campus to foster a more positive social and sexual

climate. Through workshops, programs, and conversations, they collaborate within their own

communities to build a culture of respect and support. They also serve as a resource for students who

have experienced or heard about sexual misconduct, providing a peer avenue to SHARE, the UWC,

Title IX, and the Yale Police. The CCEs are paid employees of the YCDO, working 5-10 hours per week,

with longer hours during training periods in August and January. There’s no need for prior experience

in sexual violence prevention. The prime qualification for being a CCE is the desire to make Yale a

better place! For more information or to apply, please visit yale.edu/cce.

Interested in global health? The Global Health Studies Multidisciplinary Academic Program (GHS MAP) is holding an information session on the program and how to become a Global Health Scholar. The program offers students exposure to cross-disciplinary perspectives, issues, and skills relevant to global health research and practice. The information session is open to all interested Yale College students. Students typically apply to be a Global Health Scholar in the fall of their sophomore year. On occasion, juniors with compelling interest in the GHS MAP may be considered for admittance into the program. Applications are due November 2, 2018.

Global Health Studies Info Session October 10, 2018 2-3pm WLH Room 207 (100 Wall Street)

More information can be found at http://jackson.yale.edu/study/global-health-studies or by contacting the GHS Program Manager at [email protected]. RSVP requested via EventBrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/global-health-studies-info-session-oct-10-t...

Study Breaks Save the date! The Long Night Against Procrastination will be happening on Tuesday, December 11th at Bass Library. More locations are being determined now, in addition to a possible Midterm edition in November. As we have confirmed information we will distribute it to you for your weekly bulletins.

If you are interested in hosting a study break at your college, please be in touch! We can help coordinate and staff an event.

Personal Librarian Program Every single Yale College undergraduate has a personal librarian. Along with first-year advisers, first-year counselors, college Deans and writing tutors, your personal librarian is part of your academic support network – in this case, the person to contact when you have questions about the library, and the use of its collections in your academic research.

Find your personal librarian here: library.yale.edu/pl.

Tours of Sterling Memorial Library – through 10/16/18 Undergraduates are welcome to register for one-hour library tours! Tours run from 9/24 - 10/16 where you will have the opportunity to explore library study spaces and the Sterling book stacks – a 15-story tower that holds close to 4 million books. You will also learn about the building's history (hint: it's not as old as you might think).

Register here (space is limited): bit.ly/SMLtours

Student Curator Opportunity This program supports a senior in any academic major to curate an exhibit based on his or her senior essay research. The project must make substantial use of materials from one of the library collections. For the selected student curator, this is both an honor and an invaluable educational opportunity. With guidance from a faculty advisor, a subject librarian, and professional exhibit staff, the student curator will learn about the unique narrative form of an exhibit, presenting his or her research via the choice, description, sequence, and arrangement of material objects.

ATTENTION YALE COLLEGE SENIORS

Did you know you can plan, create, and present an exhibit based on your senior essay research? Submit your proposal by October 22. Any major is eligible; your research must use resources from a Yale library collection or archive. If you are selected to be the 2019 student curator, you will develop your exhibit with support from a faculty advisor, subject librarian, and the library’s exhibit professional staff. Your exhibit will be displayed in Sterling Memorial Library’s exhibit corridor from May to October. You will also be invited to give a curator’s talk at an exhibit opening reception hosted by the University Librarian in May.

Learn more about this opportunity at bit.ly/2w4HZcA or contact Exhibit Program Manager Kerri Sancomb at [email protected]
