The competition which takes place in June of every year is now in its 4th edition. Art competition and exhibitions such as this have in the past been organised for older children and teenagers. We decided however, to focus on younger children and preschoolers who happen to be our primary focus at The King’s School; this is because we believe that Art is a very important element of a child’s learning experience. It gives children a unique way to express themselves and it helps them to relate to culture and life around them. It also allows the child to experi-ment with textures, shapes, and colours as well as offering experiences that help increase a child’s observa-tion skills, fine motor strength and eye hand co-ordination.

The maiden competition had entries from 360 children from 40 schools. The exhibition had children from ages 1-4 in one category with the theme A Bright Sunny Day, ages 5-8 in the second category with the theme, My Family and ages 9-12 in the third category with the theme, My Dream House.

The second edition had the following age groups and themes: ages 3-5: My Mummy; ages 6-8: A Rainy Day; and ages 9-12: My School.

The third edition of the competition had 85 entries received from 20 schools. The themes with the different age groups were as follows Ages 3-5: Favourite Nigerian Food; Ages 6-8: Favourite Nigerian Attire; Ages 9-12: A Traditional Nigerian Marriage Ceremony. The sub themes for the 3rd year’s competition for the different age groups were based on Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee with the overall theme, Introducing Nigeria at 50.

For the very first time in the life of the competition, entries were displayed at the London International Gallery of Children’s Art. Judges for the competition are selected from the National Gallery of Arts, an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The competition is supported annually by the National Gallery of Art, the Terra Kulture, Ruff n Tumble and the London International Gallery of Children’s Art.

Other sponsors:

The King’s School started operations in September 2000 and since then has been offering educational services through our crèche, playgroup, nursery and grade school classes. We also have a training and consulting arm that offers workshops and seminars, and helps set up corpo-rate and mobile crèches.

Our vision is “to create unique and excellent schools all over the world in the bid of arresting a generation for Christ.” Our objectives are: (1) to breed a unique class of children using God’s laid down principles with a view to cultivating strong moral values that will equip these children to stand out in society and also enable them affect their society positively, (2) that each child achieves success in school on a daily basis, (3) to develop the interests and habits of each child to its’ full potential, (4) to foster an environment where each child feels wanted and valued and shows concern and respect for each other and the school environment.

We aim to enhance the mental, physical and social development of children by providing a safe, secure and stimulating environment that allows children to learn in a natural and pleasurable way.

We have a newsletter, The King’s Voice through which we keep in touch with parents and a magazine Toddler Times, which provides information, education and wholesome entertainment for preschoolers and their parents and is distributed free to all parents and children irrespective of the schools they attend. The King’s School is indeed a home away from home for our children.
