Changes to AMHA’s Champion TitleProgramAt its December 2017 monthly meeting, the AMHA Boardof Directors voted to make changes to its popularChampion Title Program. All changes take effect April 1,2018.

The yearly fee will be raised from $15 to $25 for horses, with a maximum total of $250 to be paid for enrollment.Yet with the fee increase comes the addition of countingretroactive reserve championships to a horse's record!Previously, reserve championships did not countretroactively, they only counted if a horse was entered forthe current show season. Reserve championships are worth1 point, except for Reserve World Championships which are2 points each.

Horses currently enrolled in the program must notifyAMHA of reserve championship points; points will not beautomatically added to a horse's record. The fee to addreserve championships to an existing enrolled horse is $25.

Is your horse enrolled in the program or are you wonderingif your horse is a champion? Do it now before the prices goup! Contact Chris Koliander at (802) 985-4944 ext. 402 [email protected]

Jubilee Regional Morgan Horse ShowTakes Hiatus for 2018

Due to continued uncertainty at the Illinois StateFairgrounds, the committee for the Jubilee RegionalMorgan Horse Show has voted to take a one-year hiatusfrom hosting the show traditionally held at the Illinois StateFairgrounds in Springfield at the end of August.

“One of our goals each year is holding a show that ourexhibitors enjoy and look forward to attending. With theclosing of the Coliseum, we have lost enthusiasm fromexhibitors and trainers and have incurred substantial costsmoving to the temporary ring, committee member ShannaGish explained. “We understand that there are no short-term plans to get back into the coliseum and facility pricingso uncertain, we voted to take the time to put on a new andbetter show in 2019. After 52 years of showing inSpringfield at the fairgrounds, it was a tough decision forthe committee to take a year off to regroup but one we feelis the best for the show and our exhibitors.” Gishconcluded.

The Morgan Weanling Gala, however, will go on asplanned. With the professional cooperation of the BuckeyeMorgan Challenge, we are thrilled that they will host theGala this year. The weanlings will have a great place toshowcase their beauty and breeding Friday evening, August10th at The Buckeye in Springfield, Ohio.

Have you ever made a comment to someone that you didn’treally think about fully before making? And then thatcomment came back around and smacked you upside thehead? Well in a round-about way, that is what happened tome in 2017.

For several years, I have had a dream, a “someday” thought, that I would eventually like to breed a horse, train him/her,and show that horse in ranch events. I’m not a big timeshow person, but you can’t complain about theopportunities not being there if you don’t compete in theones that are available. I enjoy being behind the scenes formy 4-H kids. And I honestly enjoy the American StockHorse and American Ranch Horse shows and clinicsbecause they are so low key and stress free withoutrequiring the big $$$ clothes and tack sets that arecommon in the conventional show ring. I have watchedfriends compete in these venues, taken my horses to clinicsand supported friends at AQHA in starting Ranch Riding(formerly known as Ranch Pleasure) classes at their WorldShow. I worked with the Dixie Cup to get Ranch Pleasureadded to their class list and brought my 4-H kids andhorses to show. And when speaking to a friend a year ago, Imade the off-hand comment that if the Morgan GrandNational would ever add this class to their show, I would goand compete. I wasn’t terribly worried about the comment.Everyone knows it takes show committees, and especiallyMorgan show committees, years to make changes, right?Well, my words came back to haunt me when that samefriend called me in the spring of 2017 and told me that theGrand National had indeed added Ranch Pleasure for the2017 show. In her words, “You’re going and you’recompeting! You promised!!” What else could I say but yes?And I finally had the horse to help me achieve the dream onmy bucket list. Born in 2009, LER Charli’s Angel was theresult of breeding the mare I had grown up with to PKR

The Journey to Oklahoma by Lucy Ray

Primavera Brio. The result is a 15.1 hand buckskin marewith daddy’s short-coupled conformation and her mama’sbring-it-on attitude and both parents’ cow sense. Otherthan an initial 45-day session with a dear friend/trainer,Debra Wright, I had done all of her training and taken herto several Stock Horse clinics, sortings, parades, and amyriad of other outings. I was confident that she had theability and foundation on her to make this trip.

In June 2017, after returningfrom my work at Georgia State4-H Horse Show, we got serious.Ranch Riding is a class designedto showcase the attributes of aworking ranch horse. It is apattern only class that includes awalk, trot, and lope in additionto extensions of each gait, pivots, lead changes, and obstacles suchas logs. I rode 3-5 days per week

depending on my schedule and begged lessons from friendswho had shown reined cowhorses, from Debra, and had 4-H’ers and parents video me and critique our rides. Going tothe Oklahoma would be rough. October is my busiestmonth and I crammed our trip to Grand Nationals inbetween two weekends of Commercial Dairy Heifer Shows(one of which I am superintendent of) at the GeorgiaNational Fair. I convinced my best friend, Katie, to comewith me and help drive…..and later convinced her to enterthe class on the superb borrowed gelding, Black Heart’sKing.

We were overwhelmed by the amount of support wereceived for our trip. Mark, the husband of a dear deceasedfriend who had competed in the AQHA World Show inRanch Riding, offered to drive to Oklahoma and meet us

I gave “pony rides” to several kiddoes, and quite a few folksenjoyed grabbing a brush and “grooming” the horses. Acouple adults rode horses (both were experienced riders, and had attended specifically for this purpose, as they werelooking to buy a Morgan). Unfortunately I didn’t have anyready to go, but I put them on my personal horses so theycould at least get the feel of a Morgan.I was prepared to give groundwork and/or ridingdemonstrations, but visitors trickled in all day, so there justwasn’t any real good time to do these. Most of the guestscame just to see and pet horses, anyway. As a result, therewasn’t as much interest in a demo as there was in the ponyrides, and just being in paddocks and pastures with theMorgans.

It was interesting that the majority ofattendees weren’t horse people –rather, most simply love horses andwanted the opportunity to be aroundthem. Well, as we all know, Morgansdefinitely excel at meeting people! They made lots and lots of new friends!Overall, I think our attendance was lessthan 40 people. Again, most were notinterested in purchasing, but werevery interested in meeting horses. Some did express a specific interest inthe Morgan horse, while others reallydidn’t care about the particular breed –they just wanted to be around horses. The two gentlemen looking to buy aMorgan were directed to Cornerstone’sfacebook page, and I put out feelers forthem on the chat list. I suspect there might have been more“horse people” interest if the fliers thatAMHA prepared had been available afew weeks early. However, theseweren’t ready until shortly before theevent. I printed a dozen and postedthem at all the tack and feed stores in

this area, but, I think we would have had better attendancehad this been done 3-4 weeks ahead of time.

The dawn foretold of a rather warm, slightly breezy, andbeautiful day to come. And sure enough - it turned out tobe a wonderful Fall day in California’s Central Valley.Several friends and I had spent the day before, bathing andgrooming horses and doing some general tidying up of our20-acre breeding and training facility. I also posted somenew metal signs to help folks find the ranch (we are back offthe road a ways) and parked my truck just inside theproperty line fence, so guests would know they were on theright track. We felt ready! One of the things we did Friday, was to set up severaldifferent “stations” – offering up information on Morgan

Horses for the guests. Onewas a table covered withAMHA promotionalmaterials; one sported theCornerstone banner alongwith lots of Cornerstonemagazines and otherinformation; and one was forfood (we had LOTS ofdelicious home-made cookies, fresh apples, chips & salsa, and home-made popcorn).Due to the heat, we also had alarge water trough, filled withice and bottled water. And ofcourse – 50 lbs of carrots forvisitors to feed the Morgans!Guests began arriving at 9:30,even though we were notplanning to “open” until

10:00. But this didn’t present any problems –the Morganswere definitely ready! They welcomed each and everyvisitor with aplomb – from tiny toddlers, to adults. Iencouraged visitors to come into the different paddockswith me, so they could actually “meet & greet” all thehorses. This was really popular, as many guests had neverpetted a horse! And of course, the weanlings were hugelypopular – after all, who doesn’t love babies? All the horsesstood calmly and quietly, and were extremely wellmannered. And I know it won’t come as a surprise toanyone reading this … the Morgans absolutely basked in allthe attention!

This was an endeavor that simply could not have happenedwithout all the help of so many friends. At times there werequestions flying, pony rides going on, horses being saddledor unsaddled, and guests in various paddocks andpastures. Each of these required someone knowledgeable, who was right there, right then. One person simply couldnot get all this done. It looks like AMHA might begindoing this event annually, and if so, I will certainly give thatidea a thumbs-up. It was loads of fun! But also, a greatdeal of effort. However, I think all of us, the open barnhosts and AMHA, will be better prepared for the next one.

Day of the Morgan by Jo Johnson, continued

The Journey to Oklahoma by Lucy Ray, continued Katie that it didn’t matter how Angel did in the class, I washappy with the horse we had in the warm up pen that day—that made it all worth it. And it was the truth. The class itselfwasn’t spectacular for us. My nerves came back with avengeance. Which resulted in Angel tensing up and giving aless than stellar performance, complete with spooking at thejudge. Regardless, I was happy with the progress we madeover the trip. By the time we all lined up in the arena for aphotograph of the first ever Ranch Pleasure Class at theMorgan Grand National, I was so proud I could have popped. We left the horses for a well-deserved rest and ate a fantasticdinner at Cattleman’s with wonderful friends and wanderedaround the Stockyards. It was awesome to put faces withnames and Morgan legends such as Travis Filipek andJeanne Masters that I had previously only heard about.

Thursday morning, we left out bright and early to drive backto Georgia and prep for they dairy show that began the nextday. It was on the way home that it hit me how crazy we wereto attempt everything we did. Two girls from Georgia, withminimal show experience, loading up their ranch horses in astock trailer that has hauled cattle, goats, and hogs, andheading to the biggest Morgan horse show in theworld…….we had to be insane. Regardless of how it turnedout, we had fun and it’s an experience I wouldn’t have missedfor the world.

The inaugural ranch pleasure class at the 2017 GrandNationals was a HUGE success. 38 entries made it thelargest class in the entire show. Pretty darn good for the firstyear it was offered. I am heartened by the interest in thisnew division in our breed and the camaraderie between thecompetitors. If this sounds like something you would beinterested in or if you would like more information on ranchhorse shows and events in general, feel free to call or emailme. I’d love to talk to you!

there to provide support and play “show dad”. A friend witha leather shop made me a beautiful pair of chinks. A couple Iwork with lent old show shirts, hats, chaps, show pads, etc.that they used when they showed Foundation QuarterHorses. 4-H’ers, parents and farmers, set up coolers withfood, and one sent us with money for a meal at Cattlemen’sSteak House in Oklahoma City. To say we were overwhelmedwas an understatement! Have you ever watched a movie, where athletes from some third world country makes it to theOlympics and the people from their village chip in everythingthey can to make sure the athletes make it there? That iswhat it felt like for us!! We were definitely not Olympicquality but appreciated the support and sense of communityall the same. Katie and I loaded up my stock trailer and lefther house on the Alabama/Georgia line early on Monday,October 9th and had a pleasant 12-hour drive to OklahomaCity. We Mark enough for all of their support. Amie shareda tack room with us and stalled on the same aisle to help us.They all made sure we ate well and calmed our nerves.

The warm up rings were a bit of an education for Angel. While she is cool with cattle, ropes, hogs, and fire trucksirens, the snorty saddleseat horses and popping lunge whipswere a different story. King, on the other hand, tookeverything in stride and was definitely Angel’s securityblanket. Wednesday morning found us saddling horsesbright and early to get in another practice in what would beour show pen before the class. I couldn’t believe how muchAngel had improved. Tuesday she was worried and lookyduring most of our rides. She was obedient but her mind wasdefinitely elsewhere. But Wednesday morning, I had myhorse back and better than ever. She was light and obedientand most of all, relaxed. We practiced portions of ourpattern and I was amazed at the difference in her. I was toldby my grinning coaches that me relaxing and letting her workwas a big part of that. Go figure! I commented to

[first written for Classic Morgan Admirers, 1996 . Ithas been updated and revised, Jan. 2005]

Cavendish #10200 was foaled April 20, 1949 inSpringfield, Vermont. His breeder, Frances H. Bryant, was also the breeder of his sire Jubilee's Courage.Jubilee's Courage was by the great Jubilee King andout of Townshend Lass. Cavendish's dam was thegrand producing mare Paragraph, a daughter of JubileeKing. Since both of Cavendish's parents were progenyof Jubilee King, Cavendish carried 50% Jubilee Kingblood. Paragraph's dam, Nella (another grandbroodmare), was sired by Allen King, the full brotherto Jubilee King's sire, Penrod. Nella's dam, Liza Jane(yet another excellent producer), was by KnoxMorgan, also a strong influence behind Jubilee King.Liza Jane's dam, Double Daisy, also carried the sameblood to be found behind Jubilee King. This was solidBrunk breeding of the highest quality.

By breeding Jubilee King to the high percent mare,Townshend Lass (who was by the Lippitt stallionMoro and out of Gladwin who, while not consideredto be a Lippitt was of the same old high percent bloodas the Lippitts), and then the progeny of that crossback to the strong Brunk mare, Paragraph, Mrs.Bryant was doing the same thing that J. C. Brunk hadbeen doing for decades with his program in Illinois. She was quite literally following in his footsteps–andproven footsteps they were. Jubilee King horses hadproven themselves as using horses of sensibletemperament and tough ability. The golden stallionCavendish was to continue this heritage. Cavendishwas a golden chestnut, so golden that he wassometimes mistaken for palomino. His mane and tailwere light flaxen and he his left hind leg had a whitestocking. On April 18, 1950, he was transferred to theownership of Larry and Eve Oakley, then of Stockton,California. Also purchased at the same time wasJubilee's Gloria, a full sister to Jubilee's Courage. Thuswas born Caven-Glo Morgans.

Eve was active in the Northern California Horse Club.In the August 1950 issue of The Morgan Horse, shewrote (in club news for the Northern California HorseClub) "… I am so absolutely thrilled with our twoMorgan colts [ed. note–at that time, all foals werecommonly called colts] which we purchased recently, that I want everyone to know about them. We bought

Cavendish by Laura Stillwell Algranti (Part 1 of 2)

these colts from Mrs. Frances Bryant, of MeetingWaters Farm, Springfield, Vt., throughcorrespondence and pictures. Mrs Bryant gave usdetailed descriptions of them as to conformation, color, etc. We bought them sight unseen except bysnapshots taken with their winter coats and when wesaw them, we found them to be everything she saidthey were, if anything, they were more beautiful thantheir description. Their light chestnut coloring andlight flaxen manes and tails made them more strikingthan we had anticipated. You can appreciate howexcited I was when I finally received a phone callfrom Mr. Oakley, who with Mr. Al Hammer, aprominent San Joaquin Valley rancher, and our 10year old son, made the trip to Vermont to pick thesecolts up. … It was 2am when I finally saw the lights ofour van coming down the road lighting up the entirecountryside. That was a most welcome sight after an8,000 mile trip. My first glimpse of them was the littleyearling stud colt, Cavendish. I just saw one eye and avery flaxen forelock over the various articles piled inthe center stall of our van. They were finally unloadedand I had my first good look at them. They were alittle tired after their journey from practically coast tocoast. …"

Cavendish was shown in-hand at many horse shows inNorthern California with good success as a yearlingand two year old before the Oakleys loaded up theirbelongings and horses and moved to the Chicago area. There in the midwest, Cavendish learned how to driveand ride. He went on to become a solid driving horse, one photo shows him being driven by children, inaddition to doing well as a parade horse, trail horse, western and english, dressage, and jumping. He alsowas a good babysitter, staying with the newly weanedfoals. Eve continued her activity with local Morganclubs. She wrote the club news for the Central Statesclub for The Morgan Horse. The following is from theAugust 1959 issue. "The big news this month is, ofcourse, the Morgan exhibition presented at theNaperville Saddle Club Show, Naperville, Illinios. …Due to the fact that I was in the ring, and not anonlooker, Miss Dorothy Colburn kindly offered tocover it from her point of view, which follows: …Since our club slogan is 'Morgans for pleasure,' wewished to show what we considered to be the perfectpleasure horse. Versatility in a pleasure horse is, ofcourse, a must. … to show one horse which could do

Cavendish by Laura Stillwell Algranti (Part 1 of 2)

Morgan Horse show many Caven-Glo horses beingused by children and adults for many purposes. Just afew of Cavendish's get include (all with the Caven-Glo prefix): Saquaro, riding; Sunshadow, riding; SunSand and High Capri on the 1962 100 mile pleasuretrail ride in So. Illinois; Sun Sand in a 1960 Play Day;High Capri at shows; Revenue at showing westernpleasure, trail, stock; Courier, very successful at So.Calif. shows and featured on the cover of MargaretCabell Self's book on Morgan horses; Tara, trail andshow horse; Legend of Caven-Glo, on competitivetrail rides in So. Calif. Others were used as family trailhorses and never were shown in the pages of TheMorgan Horse.

Most of the Morgans that Eve bred and sold went tofamilies as family using horses. Eve was veryparticular in selling her horses. She did not sell to justanyone who had the money and wanted one of herhorses. If she felt that a person was not the right homefor a horse, there was no sale. If she felt that a personand a particular horse would not suit, there was nosale. Eve took the time to get to know the potentialbuyers and to decide if they would be a good homeand if their personality would match that of the horse.Eve knew her horses well and was very honest inassessing their abilities and temperaments.

Because so many Caven-Glo horses went to familieswho were not interested in breeding, very little of thevaluable Caven-Glo blood comes down to today.Cavendish, with his 50% Jubilee King heritage, is avaluable source of Jubilee King. Fortunately a fewbreeders did use the Caven-Glo horses and there arenow a few purposely seeking out and carefullybreeding the descendants of Cavendish. Some of thesepeople were fortunate enough to know Eve personallyand besides carrying on the bloodlines are alsocarrying on Eve's example for honesty and ethics. They too will not breed a horse without knowing itstemperament and using ability; they too are careful towhom their horses are sold. There are other breederswith Morgans carrying the Caven-Glo heritage andsome of them are coming to appreciate the legecy thatEve has left.

Cavendish proved his temperament and useability, asdid his progeny. He is a valuable concentrated sourceback to Jubilee King.{mospagebreak}

just about anything… We considered carefully all theMorgans in the Club and came to the conclusion thatthe horse which could do the job best wasCavendish…{mospagebreak}

When the big day arrived, Mrs. Oakley and her lovelygolden chestnut stallion covered themselves withglory… Cavendish came marching into the ring, hiscoat gleaming in the noontime sun, light manestreaming and his tail carried at its natural jauntyangle, jogged smoothly around, extended to a goodroad trot, then came pleasantly back to a jog again. Heshowed a couple of figure 8's–a large one and a verysmall one–backed, and turned the cart right on onespot–all with an air of enjoying himself thoroughly. Aquick change was made… Within three minutes hewas on the track again, this time attired, as was alsohis rider, for a trail ride in the West, … Cavendishshowed a Western jog, smooth as silk and like a littlemachine, loped both fast and slow, demonstrated hisneck-reining ability which is excellent, but was over-shadowed by his next performance–i.e. going throughhis whole 'reining' repertoire without reins–weightsignals alone! After one more change, … performingagain, this time both of them impeccably attired for anhour in the park. … transformed the Western rider intoan Eastern one … this time he was asked to showthree distinct speeds at the trot, to canter collectedly,to gallop on, and to come back to a collected canter. He also showed the crowd his typical Morgan walk. Afew elementary dressage movements followed (veryneatly done) and then our little Morgan Good WillAmbassador was brought to attention facing theJudge's stand."

After many years in the Chicago area, the Oakleysmoved back to California. This time they settled in theLos Angeles area. Eve sold many of her Morgansbefore the move, not being able to ship all of them.Once back in California, Eve continued to show onoccasion, although not as heavily as while in themidwest. Eve believed in using her horses. She usedall her horses, stallions and mares. She was active inshows, playdays, demonstrations, and was very activewith children, allowing them to use her horses for theirclub projects. Eve would not use for breeding a horsethat did not have the proven sensible temperament, intelligence, and using ability to be a true workinghorse. A quick look through past issues of The

This will be the first time we crossedIzzy and Flirt with Sliver so we are very excited to see howthese crosses produce.Hopefully 2018 will see us at least starting on a new barnthat will allow for some space to work with barn that willallow for some space to work with horses in the winter. Wedefinitely will need some more space for stud colts whilewe watch them fill out a bit before gelding.I want to share that I bought Caylyn Sarah Walker s book"Horseplay and Harmony". We have had fun working ontricks. It has been a nice addition to our training program.

Jenny Blanchett-Morse - Mountain MapleMorgans - Wyoming

Mountain Maple Morgans had a pretty quiet 2017 with Ace(Randallane Oasis, Randallane Genesis x Madrona AprilTwilight) off to Okan Morgans from mid March to courttheir lovely mares. I'm excited to see the 2018 babies! Asluck would have it, his trip home in Oct. coincided withOwyhee Canyonlands Pioneer / AHA Distance HorseNational Championships at Oreana Idaho. I picked Ace upWed. the 4th AM. Once camp was set up for the weekend, Isaddled up for his first time in 7 months (by my records),lunged a few minutes and hopped on for a shake-downcruise while ponying my mare. He looked in splendidshape and felt great too so we entered Saturday's ride. I wasworried about looking foolish if things didn't go well but hefelt so good I had to try the 25. My mare picked up aginormous rock so we pulled for lameness on Friday whichwas a big discouragement. Ace did great and though wepaced to complete, he finished tenth! I think he was a greatrepresentative of the Foundation/Lippitt Morgan! Plus, there was a mileage adjustment so the results credit the rideas 30 miles. Don't think I'd have dared to enter that lengthunder the circumstances. Photo is in Stallion Pictorialsection.

Of course more prospective breeders contacted me whileAce was away than I've heard from in several years sohopefully he'll be busy this spring. I Am excited to breedAce and Charm this spring for a custom ordered made-from-the-kit foal in 2019. The 2013 gelding and mare arestill for sale. Mtn Maple Chace (Randallane Oasis x MtnMaple Charm) has gotten some good miles in themountains this year. He is such a good guy that he was mytrail-clearing partner this year. The girls (Mtn Maple Lace= Randallane Oasis x Mtn Maple Holiday Lily born 2013and Mtn Maple Lambert = Cimarron Of Quietude x MtnMaple Charm born 2016) only got out a little but handledtrails, creeks, 4-wheelers, etc. just fine. Lacy has mostlybeen a work horse hauling stuff around the place. Bertie(see photo packing a load of pillows) and I have done lotsof ground work in our "Intro to Riding and Driving Skills"lessons. She'll be ready to hitch soon.

Nora Knight - Vintage Morgans -Like everyone else, we are just trying to survive winter. Sofar this year, we have had a normal winter, unlike some ofyou in the southern states. We are prepared for the coldbecause it's part of winter here and I can't imagine havingweeks of freezing temps when there was no way toanticipate it or prepare for it. My heart goes out to those ofyou enduring this. Hopefully, by the time this newsletter ispublished, all will be back to normal.

Activities have slowed down around here. We sent VintageFairytale (Sumrsnow Majestic x Toy Story) to AbbyKnight for a month of training. She took well to her saddletraining. She is so sweet and willing, it makes me proud tobe her breeder. We brought her home a couple weeks agoand took Vintage China Doll (Sir Danes Sire Storm x DeanMt Nikkoletta) to the stable so she could be ridden moreconsistently through the winter. She is already toning upthose muscles. The horses always enjoy being in regularwork.

We didn't have any foals in 2017, but decided to breedVintage Ruby Spar (Looking Good x Genou RositaMargarita) to Sumrsnow Majestic (Westridge Ashly Morox Crest Cantata) for a 2018 foal. This is the third time we

Farm News

have done this cross. The first two, Vintage Bella Roseand Vintage Rubicon, turned out to be attractive, athleticMorgans that are doing dressage and Working Equitation. The attached photo is of Vintage Ruby Spar, taken thissummer.

My goals for 2018 are to ride more, get more instruction inCowboy Dressage, and do more trail riding in our lovelycountry.

New Year's greetings to all!

Susan Suber - Sugar Shack Farms - SCSome of you may remember our purchase of a Chestnutmare several years ago. Collectors Classique,a FarceursFools Gold Daughter. She was sadly very underweight andhad been exposed to a Quarter Horse/Lippazan Stud. Wehoped she didn't take. Seems when you spend thousands ona breeding we end up with nada, but buy an emaciatedfretfull mare bred to a non Morgan and Viola!!..a beautifulpalomino colt is dropped practically in your lap. So I'mthinking...greez ,it's hard to sell registered foals..how will Iever sell this mutt? Well,he turned out so nice I had severaloffers. The best fit was with a young family we knowwell, but they live in Michigan. They purchased Reb as,ayear-ling and left him with us for a year as they sold theirhome, purchased one with several acres and a small barnand readied it for his arrival. So in October we loaded Reband his mini friend GiGi up for the 900 mile trip. We droveall night arriving at dawn the next day to an eager 12 yr oldgirl and her folks. All went well as it was meant to be.Happy girl and Happy horses. We know they are in goodhands and loved. So before heading for home (S.C.) Wedecided to drive across the state and head for fellowCornerstone member Rory Mcgoff of Morgan's. We haveknow Rory for several years as he used to live in Ga. andattended the Mother Earth Fair with us one year. It hadrained and was cool. Rory lives off the beaten track severalmiles along a gravel road. We stopped to pick up a pie and

some pastries so we wouldn't arrive empty handed. Rorytook us out to meet his fine herd of mares and their foals. Two of these mates he purchased from us so it was fun towhistle my call and watch them come running. It did myheart good. The foals were eager and kind. The maresattentive and happy for a scratch. We had a simple dinnerwith the family and stayed up late after the kids were put tobed. Its always a good time getting together with yourhorse friends The next day after a quick hello...home wewent. If you ever get the chance to visit with fellowmembers I highly recommend it!

Cheryl Yelle - Hillrose Morgans - New York

It has been awhile since I have had time to share witheveryone what we have been up to here in WesternNY state at Hillrose Morgans.

Last summer, besides all of the responsibilities thatcome with a small private breeding farm, we bred 2mares, and are expecting 2 foals this coming spring. Both of these mares are 20+ yrs old, so I chose youngstallions and both caught on the 1st try. Both of thesefoals will be for sale. The 2nd foal has some interestfrom a person that knew her sire.

The 1st foal is (Hillrose Taconic Major x Coal CreekCheyenne) and is 100% Foundation. Both of theseMorgans were of interest to Lynne Shpak, of TheStatesman Morgan Farm, and were bred in hermemory. If this foal is the what I anticipate from thisbreeding, it should be a magnificent sport / dressage /CDE Morgan.

The 2nd foal is (Hillrose In Tribute x New RanGentry). Gentry’s foal will be a High % Foundationfoal as she has 1 line back to Upwey King Peavinethrough Paramount Ambassador, 6 generations back. She is a granddaughter of Marvelous Ideal 3 lines toAllen’s Major, and has Jubilee King still on herpedigree!!! Tribute has 3 lines back to Lippitt FieldMarshal and lots of Archie O, so this foal will beloaded up with all of the lines that I looked for.

We prepared our Junior stallion, Hillrose TaconicMajor, aka “Jack”, to drive and show at 2 local events. His 1st show ever was at East Aurora, NY and Ientered him in the “Rookie” classes in which he got a1st, 3 – 2nd’s and the Reserve Championship. Nextwe went on to Walnut Hill, in August. He held hisown and took home a ribbon in Cross Country, butwasn’t impressed with the large ring classes, althoughI thought that he did well in his 2nd one, the PleasureTurnout class. He loves to drive and work, but may behappier with HDTs and CDEs vs pleasure shows asthese are driven solo.

On Labor Day weekend, I took my other Juniorstallion, Hillrose Beaudacious Jigg to a wonderfulclinic with Tracey Morgan at the Walnut Hill show

grounds and did our 1st HDT and got a about it 1stplace. This was so much fun that I have to learn more.No polishing brass or cleaning leather!!!! He iscurrently in saddle training (dressage) with ShelleyIngalls at Echo Hill Training Facility and doingawesome. Shelley has bred and shown Arabians andloves Morgans as well. She may be showing himunder saddle this coming summer.

Marvelous Masterpiece, my senior stallion, is turning26 yrs old this year and doing well. I am planning onbreeding him to 2-3 mares this spring. I will also beputting more driving time on Hillrose Miss Lilly andHillrose In Tribute, unless Tribute sells, and both willbe trained to saddle as well. Hillrose Ellie Moro willbe turning 3 yrs old this spring and she will need tofinish up her basic training and will learn to drivesoon.

Because of my age, ability and number of younghorses here, most of my foals will be for sale fromnow on. Preference will be given to those interestedin breeding. Miss Lilly and Ellie Moro are beingretained, for now, to be my future broodmares.

In closing, I would like to encourage all of us tocommunicate and encourage each other. I know that Iget concerned and discouraged trying to accomplishthis sometimes daunting task of breeding to preserve, but then I chat with another CS member and realizethat although I often feel alone, I’m not. There areothers out there persevering as well. I truly believethat the timing is right.

To determine what percentage of your horse'slineage is Foundation, you must subtract out theoutcrosses, which will primarily be Saddlebred. Onthe Allbreed site, the horse's breed is listed under itsname. The most common saddlebred ancestor fortoday's Morgans is Upwey King Peavine. He wasregistered as a Morgan, but his parents were bothregistered Saddlebreds, and so we count him as aSaddlebred outcross. He is behind some very widelyused horses, including Upwey Ben Don andWaseeka's Nocturne, so if you are familiar withMorgan bloodlines, you will know which lines inyour horse's pedigree to look most closely at. Othernames to watch for are Hudson, Admiral Denmark,Polly Forrest, Forest Whirlwind, BarrymoreMcDonald, Rex McDonald, and Rex Peavine.Remember, the first registered non-Morgan youencounter is the "Marker" for where the outcrossingbegan. So to discover the outcrosses, you followeach line of your horse's pedigree back until you findeither a Saddlebred or a Morgan born before 1930.If you find a non-Morgan ancestor, note in whichgeneration the outcross occurs. Do this for each lineof your horse's pedigree.

When you have your totals, use the following chartto figure out what percentages to subtract. They arerounded to the nearest tenth, for the sake ofmaking them easier to use. Generation 1 would bethe sire/dam of the horse being calculated.
