New Coasters Newsletter March & April 2017
Kia Ora and Haere Mai! In March it will be five years since I started working for New Coasters –
time for a bit of reflection…
Since it was founded in early 2009, our little organisation has been
through some interesting phases and developments, but overall we have
grown steadily. Since re-opening after the Christmas break this year we
have already had 25 people signing up to become group members and
attend some of our various activities! We now have more than 2 dozen
volunteers helping us out at different levels and there’s no shortage of
ideas for future projects…
Most importantly we want to increase (grow ) our community
involvements and make sure people are well connected within the West
Coast – no matter for how long they’ve lived here! We want to see our
multicultural social network growing and continuing to make a
difference in people’s lives. We are also very happy and fairly proud of
the personal growth we see in many of our group members – you
develop new skills, friendships and more whilst settling into our area.
One of many definitions of growth is “the process of increasing in amount,
value, or importance”. Many newcomers make great contributions by
volunteering, starting innovative projects and bringing fresh ideas and
skills with them. They are invaluable for our local communities – their
efforts help to develop a sense of belonging and pride and grow the
attraction of the area. Having said that, growth and changes can be
somewhat scary, too, because it involves a certain degree of exposure
and uncertainty…
“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.” C. JoyBell C. We are happy to help and support you throwing yourself onto and into
things! Let’s grow together Birte

Stories... We all have our stories. Stories why we did certain things (or why not), experiences we had, secrets, funny and sad encounters in our lives. I often get to hear parts of your personal stories – why you’ve moved here and what happened to you along the way... I think many of those stories a truly interesting and touching. Every family on the Coast has their settlement story – some of it happened 150 years ago, some 15 days ago - but we often have more in common than we think. I’d like to share more of those stories with the wider community as they would be eye-opening and helpful to grow together as a community. If you are willing to share yours, please get in touch…
A better world... Speeches can be powerful – they make us think, act and they can initiate change. From new and unexpected voices will come discoveries that can help a school, a community, even a country. Small voices add up. 15th March marks World Speech Day. This year’s theme is “A better world” and the Grey District library will hold an event. Contact [email protected] to find out more details.
Growing our communities... After a couple of very successful public meetings we are happy to continue supporting the new ‘Incredible Edible West Coast’ action group. Aim is to grow more fruit & vegetables around our towns which has many benefits. Plans are to have working bees, revamp existing raised beds, have more helping hands in the community garden, create a local food map and more. The group is looking for people with a wide range of skills and resources (not just gardeners), so get in touch via [email protected] or contact Jenny: 027 4836639. Don’t forget: IF YOU EAT, YOU’RE IN!
Take a seat... At a recent walk around town I was truly surprised to see how many neglected looking benches there are around Greymouth CBD . Wouldn’t it be nice to adopt a bench, to pep it up and make sure the bench and its surroundings invite to sit down, rest or chat? Let me know your thoughts!
What else is happening:
One of our latest project ideas is to develop a
calendar including lots of YOUR photos, stories,
recipes, tips AND interesting community
information! Who wants to support this fundraiser
for 2018? We are open to any ideas & suggestions!
BIKES for newcomers… Do you have a bike in your garage you don’t need any more? We have a few people who would love to use it as
they don’t have driver’s licenses yet…
Tutors for cooking sessions wanted! Do you like to cook (and bake)? Would you feel confident to teach others some dishes from your home country? WestREAP and New Coasters are planning to organise international cooking sessions and we are looking for people who can teach others some classic dishes, cook and eat them together.
