New Coasters Newsletter November & December 2017
Kia Ora and Haere Mai! The e The end of the year is approaching – time to reflect and remind
ourselves of things we have achieved this year… This is often more
than you initially think! Doing something you’ve never done before,
developing a new friendship, helping someone else, establishing a
new healthy habit, discovering a nice walk, starting a new job or
hobby – there are so many things you can give yourselves the
‘thumbs up’ for and be grateful for the opportunity to learn,
experience and grow.
Gratitude towards yourself and others can be expressed in many
ways – sharing a smile, a conscious deep breath, saying Thank you,
writing a lovely note, giving presents, cooking food and so much
more…
Did you know that the US American celebration of Thanksgiving
started almost 400 years ago when British immigrants invited the
Native American population for dinner to express their gratitude for
a good harvest? We will have a special Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner
end of November to express our gratitude for the good things in
life.
We also invite you to join our Volunteer Day celebrations in early
December– we are so grateful for all the amazing contributions
volunteers make towards our organisation and the wider
community!
And last but not least we hope to see you at the last but not least
put the 18th of December into your calendar: We’ll celebrate
International Migrants Day with a bunch of surprise pop-ups near
our venue… Check us this short video – just some food for thought..
I look forward to catching up with you at one or more of all those
upcoming activities ☺ Birte

NEWS from the headquarter... Let’s plant global flavours You might have noticed the growing number of planter boxes around Greymouth that encourage you to help yourself to edible plants and maybe you have picked the odd lettuce leave or helped yourself to herbs to enhance your dinner… That’s the idea, so feel free to carry on and also to become involved yourself (email [email protected] for
more information and/ or contact them on facebook). Luckily New Coasters have been donated a planter box as well and we are now planning to give it our own flavour by turning it into a ‘global flavours’ box. We want to plant lots of exotic and not-so-common international edible plants – particularly herbs… Do you have any seeds or cuttings? If so, please let me know!
Food stalls The great thing about summer is that there are lots of markets, festivals and other celebrations that offer fun activities and FOOD! We often get approached to set up a food stall at those occasions. It’s usually great fun to be out in the communities, talk to people and showcase our skills and diversity by providing international food and also a good opportunity to make some extra money… We have agreed to run a stall a the Around the World Food Festival which is part of the Greymouth Christmas Carnival activities on 8th December. Now we are looking for people to join in and help to prepare and sell food – get in touch with me for details!
Spiritual spaces The West Coast is home to people from more than 50 different ethnicities. With the growing ethnic diversity, we also notice growing religious diversity and I have been approached to provide information where people can go to pray if they don’t follow a Christian religion. Well, good question?!! Are you aware of a ‘multi faith place’ or any other spiritual space to practise your religion, meditate and pray? Or would you be interested in talking about this?
Most airports provide a neutral prayer room, so maybe the Coast should have one too 😊
We are online! Check out www.newcoasters.org.nz ! Providing information is right on top of our ‘to-do-list’ to ensure you don’t miss out on anything that’s happening. Our brand-new website includes a directory of existing groups and clubs in the Grey and Westland District where you can find out about lots of existing groups. Please send me any details for clubs you know about: NAME of the group, WHAT they do, WHEN & WHERE they meet, WHO is the contact person and HOW can they be contacted (phone & email).
We also have an online event calendar including information about one-off happenings as well as ongoing meetings and gatherings. We are aware that it will be an ongoing process to keep this up-to-date, so please send us all information available about things that are
coming up – concerts, markets, workshops, etc. as well as ongoing local activities 😊

Time Bank West Coast is coming... The CoRe Project is currently supporting the development of a Time Bank for our region. On invitation by the Kumara Residents Trust, two members of the Lyttelton Timebank, Margaret Jeffries and Wendy Everingham, gave a talk about Time Banking in Greymouth and Hokitika in early September. The participants got quite excited and a small group carried on some groundwork over the last few weeks to set up a system for the West Coast. Time Banking is a way of trading skills in a community. Instead of dollars, time credits are used as payment. Members earn time credits for the work they do for one another and then use them to “buy” another member’s time to get their work done. Any skills can be traded, the options are practically endless. In Lyttelton, looking after pets and property, gardening, computer tuition and problem solving, home renovation, language tuition and translations, and childcare are all very popular, but also helping with book keeping, anything auto, event setup, food, marketing and media are traded skills. In Time Banking, everybody’s time is equal. No matter what type of work is done, one hour always equals one time credit, one to one. Every person is equally valued. If you would like to learn more, or contribute to creating policies, make a logo or flyers, or share your opinion, please email us: [email protected] and we’ll sign you up to join our online forum. We are also working on a Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/TimeBankWestCoast/.
We are hoping to be up and running before Christmas!!
Have you heard about TECHSPACE? It’s an exciting place in Greymouth with a great range of tech tools like a virtual reality
system, 3D printer and CNC machine.
They have invited members of our group to visit them, access to tech tools and
equipment, as well as discuss ideas for workshops etc.
They have developed a survey to capture your needs and feedback and would appreciate
your participation: https://goo.gl/forms/5j1RtFR4NB9amon53
Please let me know if you would like me to organise a group visit (which times work for
you??) or contact Eric directly to talk TECH: [email protected]
