Peggy Brock presents our RYLA students and their mothers.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA) was created by Rotary International in 1971 and adopted in District 7750 in 1983. In June, Erskine College hosts RYLA for rising high school juniors and seniors in the District. Subjects include Fundamentals of Leadership, Ethics of Positive Leadership, Importance of Communication Skills, Problem Solving and Conflict Management, Building Ones Self Confidence and Self Esteem, and Service to Ones Community. Each year, the Rotary Club of Greenville sponsors two Greenville High School students to RYLA. At the Rotary Club of Greenville meeting on June 28, this year’s RYLA scholarship recipients, Ashley Sitton, Ashana Taylor and their mothers, Sharee James and Tameka Edwards, were introduced. Ashana spoke about the value of the RYLA experience in her life. Elizabeth Lyons, Tameka Edwards and I visited the program participants and Mark Peeler, RYLA coordinator and Erskine Director of Athletics. We were impressed with how Mark had engaged the participants, and we learned about how the program was affecting them. The RYLA program inspires students to effect change when they return home. RYLA is a Rotary District program worthy of our support. Peggy Brock, Chair of RYLA committee

Happy New Year, Rotarians! The beginning of the 2011-2012 Rotary year presents us all with an opportunity for reflection and anticipation about our life together in the Rotary Club of Greenville. The past year, under the extraordinary leadership of Charles Warne, was certainly a memorable one in many ways – earning a number of first-place awards in District competition, achieving the RI Presidential Citation and Club of Distinction honors, and raising over $40,000 toward the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation challenge toward polio eradication (of which the Stop Polio Cold partnership with the Greenville Road Warriors was a major part), just to name a few. Thanks, Charles, for your personal example of living “Service Above Self.” In the year ahead your officers, Board of Directors, and I look forward to continuing the tradition of service and leadership in our Club and community that has characterized this organization throughout its 95 year history. We’ve all heard of the old tradition that a bride should carry “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” on her wedding day. I think that may not be a bad way to approach a new Rotary year either. We will continue doing the things that have served us well (something old). We can start programs and activities that we haven’t done before (something new). There are ideas that other clubs have used which we can adapt successfully to our situation (something borrowed). Okay, I’m having a bit of a problem with figuring out the something blue, but at least it is one of the Rotary colors. I will have more to say about plans for the coming year at our meeting on July 12. I trust you will all make every effort to join with your fellow Rotarians as we kick off another exciting year in the Rotary Club of Greenville. I look forward to seeing you there. Yours in Rotary Service, Bert

New Member Lunch

On the first Monday of each month, new members are invited to join other new members for lunch (dutch treat) at noon at City Range Grill, 615 Haywood Road (across from Haywood Mall). These meetings count as a makeup for a regular meeting up to 2 weeks before or after.
