If you are an attendee/delegate you are probably here because you already have a ‘leaning’ in this direction as a future career or you may be undecided, whichever is the case do keep an open mind and take full advantage of the presentations, help, advice available and use the event to build/develop your network not only with the exhibitors, but also fellow attendees, a good network will prove to be extremely valuable in the future.

If you are an exhibitor, you may be here for a number of different business reasons, but to me you offer a variety to our target audience, whether it be immediate/future employment, training opportunities and/or advice on careers in Construction and/or Engineering; I ask you to take time and make the effort to engage with as many attendees as possible, attendance will be relatively low at this event

compared with other events that we run, but the potential reach, through today’s attendees may well be considerable, many will already have networks and can help you market your organisations services and/or opportunities further, but this will largely depend on the way you conduct and sell yourselves to attendees today. Additionally, BFRS will use the event and your attendance/contribution to reach those that could not be at the event today through ongoing marketing.

Finally, thank you all for coming and remember resettlement/transition is a process and the event today is just part of that process, your experience today, whether attendee or exhibitor is important to us, so can I ask you all to let us have your constructive feedback at the end of the day.

WELCOME TO OUR ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION EVENT

Welcome to the BFRS Construction and Engineering Awareness and Careers Event, this is the second of our Sector Specific events and will help us to shape such event formats for the future. so please let us have your feedback at the end of the day.

Today’s event provides a huge variety of possibilities to someone making the transition from Military to Civilian life. These include employment, training, networking and support opportunities for Armed Forces personnel during all stages of their resettlement and beyond.

If you’re not sure where you want to work or what you want to do when leaving the forces, a careers fair can introduce you to a range of possibilities. Just don’t engage exhibitors in conversation unless you have at least some idea of what they do. Keep a copy of the event magazine with you for reference and chat to someone on the BFRS stand if you need a bit more guidance.

For most Service Leavers this will be new, so if you’re a nervous, see this as an opportunity

Get the Most from Today’s Eventto practice speaking to hiring managers. Try and step outside your comfort zone by setting a personal target: identify two or three employers you want to speak to and prepare some questions beforehand.

After the event, make time to digest all the information you’ve gathered. Think about how you will use this to focus your search or enhance your applications.

Aim to get the contact details of people you have met. They can form part of your network not just for the immediate, but also for the long-term future.

If you think of a question later, contact the person you met to find out if they can help.

Most of all, have fun! Today is about enjoying yourself, meeting many new people and finding new career and training opportunities that may lead to long-term careers. Have fun, be confident and approach any and all exhibitors!

Armed Forces Day is the perfect opportunity for you to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces Community (AFC); from those who are currently serving, families of service personnel, veterans and the Reserve Forces.

There are many ways for you to get involved and show your support, from attending events, celebrating online or even holding your own Armed Forces Day event.

Saturday 25th June, Armed Forces Day, will be celebrated in many different ways throughout the UK by individuals and organisations wanting to show their support for those who have served for our country. What will you be doing this year?

British Forces Resettlement Services (BFRS) will be in attendance at a variety of events throughout the UK, with team members showing their support and representing BFRS.

So make sure you keep an eye out for the BFRS badge if you’re at any Armed Forces Days events in the UK!

Armed Forces Day happens once a year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t show your support for the Armed Forces Community all year round. There are always events on throughout the UK that you can get involved with to show your support, fundraise and enjoy!

Details of some of these events can be found on the events page of the BFRS website at www.bfrss.org.uk!

With this in mind, BFRS are here to support the Armed Forces Community 365 days a year, and are on hand to help individuals in their resettlement from Military to Civilian life and beyond.

We have an online portal where members of the AFC can create an online profile, to search and apply for vacancies, training and education via our website. The BFRS team are also available to advise individuals about various steps of their resettlement and will always try to help as much as we can with any questions you may have.

How are you celebrating Armed Forces Day 2016?

At BFRS we are in contact with a large number of organisations looking to support and employ individuals from the AFC, and these organisations also attend our careers events throughout the UK. Our upcoming careers events for the remainder of the year are;

• Grantham Jobs & Careers Fair – 14th July 2016 – Grantham Meres Leisure Centre

• Tidworth Jobs & Careers Fair – 15th September 2016 – Tidworth Leisure Centre

• IT, Telecomms & Project Management Industry Careers Day – 20th October 2016 – Coventry, West Midlands

• Catterick Jobs & Careers Fair – 24th November 2016 – Catterick Leisure Centre

Just like attending an Armed Forces Day Event; why should you attend a Job & Career Event?

There isn’t just one advantage of attending a fair, but many. Here are some:

1) Instant & Long Term Employment: Many organisations are present at job fairs to instantly recruit new employees, as well as securing potential personnel for their future recruitment objectives. The time, money, and efforts spent on the complete recruitment and selection process is significantly reduced for employers by simply attending an event. They get to have a one-on one meeting with YOU, the prospective job applicants and even conduct on-the-spot interviews.

2) Industry Exposure: Even if a delegate is not interested in immediate employment, they can simply meet with employers from different industries to determine where their future career choice lies. You can talk to several organizations and their hiring managers to discuss what sort of skill sets and qualifications will be required in case you decide to apply in the future. You can also ask an employer to review your CV and gain their opinion on what needs to be included or removed to perfect it. Some organisations are willing to give career counselling free of charge which is also a fabulous opportunity for delegates who have yet to decide their career path.

3) Networking: The number one benefit of job & career fairs is that it is a great opportunity to network with prospective employers. Be friendly, polite, and professional with anyone you meet, especially if he/she is a hiring manager. Ask for business cards and tell them that you are interested in working with them should a vacancy arrive. If you make an impression, they might ask you to submit a copy of your CV and keep in touch with them after you complete your Service.

4) Person Above Paper: A piece of paper (CV) can easily be ignored and tossed into a bin. However, meeting a potential employer person-to-person will put a face on your application. You have the opportunity to dress, talk, and behave professionally to make a winning first impression. That way your contact with the employer is more personal and memorable. Plus, it will also improve your chance of employment.

As you can see the list could go on, but what’s important is that you get the very best from everything that is on offer to the Armed Forces Community, whether it be Armed Forces Day or the various services we provide.

Registering for ELCs From 1st April 2016 the Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) and Further Education and Higher Educa-tion schemes have seen some changes.

The key changes to the schemes are as follows:

• All Service Personnel (SP) currently in service will be auto-enrolled to be eligible for both Schemes, as will future SP on completion of Phase 1 training

• A new ELC payment has been created: an aggregated lower tier payment, a single payment of up to £3000 for those with 6 or more years of qualifying service completed on or after 1 Apr 16, which will count as all 3 payments.

• The qualifying service required for lower tier payments and FEHE will increase from 4 to 6 years from 1 Apr 2017. SP who have already accumulated 4 years qualifying service before 1 Apr 2017 will keep their entitlement to use lower tier payments and FEHE.

• Post service access to ELC and FEHE, for all those leaving on or after 1 Apr 2016, will be reduced to 5 years.

• Those who left between 1 Apr 11 and 31 Mar 16 (both dates inclusive) will have until 31 Mar 21 to use ELC or FEHE – 5 years from now. Anyone who left before 01 April 2011 will retain 10 years of post-service access.

What you can use ELCs for • You can claim up to £1,000 (Lower Tier) or £2,000 (Higher Tier) per financial year

(31st March – 1st April) towards qualifying courses

• ELCs can be used for up to 80% of a course; you have to cover the remaining 20% yourself (you can use your Resettlement Grant for this)

• You can claim 3 times (as long as they are in separate financial years)

• You can use ELCs for up to 10 years from your last day of service, but for all those leaving on or after 1 Apr 2016, this is reduced to 5 years

• ELCs can be used towards the costs of tuition fees including VAT

• ELCs cannot be used towards travel, subsistence, accommodation, meals, equipment or course materials where additional fees apply

• You can use one claim for multiple courses, as long as they are linked by a single career goal or industry, and are with the same provider.

Qualifying CoursesFor you to be able to yours your ELCs on a course, it must:

• Be from an ELCAS accredited provider (Visit the ELCAS website for a full list).

• Be accredited by NQF or QCF (National Qualification Framework or Qualifications and Credit Framework).

• Result in a qualification which is Level 3 or higher.

Anil’s StoryAnil Gurung was serving in the Ghurkas in Afghanistan before an incident with an IED, which meant he had to be discharged from service. Read how Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, a leading social enterprise by the RBLI helped Anil back into employment.

Joining the army was something that Anil had always dreamed of and in 2006, he fulfilled his lifelong ambition and became a rifleman with the 2nd Royal Gurkha Rifles. Thousands apply each year to get into the Gurkha’s but only 230 are chosen.

Page 13: New Challenge | New Beginnings: Engineering & Construction

www.bfrss.org.uk Engineering & Construction 2016 Careers Fair | 13

Anil’s first tour was to Afghanistan, where he conducted day to day patrols and security. 20 days before he was due to return home he stepped on an IED, lost one of his legs and had multiple other injuries. He was only 24.

Anil comments: “In Afghanistan I spent my days doing patrols and security, then one day I stepped on an IED and my career ended. It felt bad, I didn’t want my career to end and it was tough.”

Anil returned to the UK and went to Headley Court for several years of rehabilitation. He says: “Lots of my friends came back injured. We used to share our feelings and pains. This helped me through rehab; it would have been very hard to take on my own.”

Anil was discharged from Headley Court in May 2013 and in June he applied for a role at Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company with the RBLI.

Anil has been in stable employment ever since and has become a highly valued member of BBMC’s Signs Team in Aylesford. He also has the skills and ability to work across other teams at BBMC.

In 2014, Anil competed in the Invictus Games, supported by Prince Harry. Anil was on the sitting volleyball team and took Gold, winning in the final against the USA 3-0.

Anil says: “I was very proud to be chosen for the Gurkhas. I served in Afghanistan but was medically discharged as I stepped on an IED and was badly injured. I was only 24, I thought

I would serve my whole life. I felt depressed, it was not how I thought my life would be. I didn’t know what I would do. Working every day in the factory is the best thing that could happen to me. When you are working you are busy, you don’t have the time to think about depressing things. In the factory I am surrounded by people who were in the Forces like me. We all have this in common and work as a team.

“I was also lucky to be part of the Invictus Games 2014 on the volleyball team. We are selected in the national team for the games. We played against 13 countries and won gold for the UK. I am proud to be in the GB team again and competing in May.”

Britain’s Bravest Manufacturing Company is a leading social enterprise by the RBLI, which helps provide sustainable employment for ex-Forces personnel. You can find out more about BBMC here: www.britainsbravestmanufacturing.org.uk
