Polymers as your go-between for tiles and substratesMounting ceramic tiles onto floors and walls requires the use of adhesives. As far as ceramic tile adhesive mixtures are concerned, these can be split into three categories:

• CTA paste based on polymer in emulsion, fillers, and additives, yet without cement• 2K systems, which are based on mix of cementitious materials and a polymer in emulsion•• 1K systems, in which the polymer is based on a redispersible powder (RDP). Note: Please refer to our separate application bulletin on ceramic tile adhesives made with RDP.

Ceramic Tile Adhesive Paste - Based on Liquid DispersionsTheseThese liquid formulations have the advantage of being ready to use. Thanks to this, craftspeople can immediately start and stop as needed and are not restricted by the pot life of the system, which is crucial requirement of 2k systems.

CCTA paste can be formulated to be very elastic, using soft elastic dispersions. Typical dispersions for this application are Revacryl AE 4522, Revacryl L 8761 and others.

Ready-to-use tile adhesives are available in two quality types to accomodate different requirements:

• standard requirements (D1)• increased requirements, for instance water resistance (D2)

ForFor D1 products, we recommend standard dispersions such as Revacryl AE 4625. For D2 products, the dispersions require adhesion promoters which are polymerized inside the polymer. Here, Revacryl AE 4522, L 8761, AE 3737 and others represent excellent choices.

2K Ceramic Tile AdhesiveForFor application to floors, mostly cementitious adhesives are used. These are mixtures of sand, fillers, cement, cellulose, additives and dispersions in liquid polymer dispersions. Suitable choices are XSBRs like Lipaton SB 29Y130 or acrylics like Revacryl R 387.

ForFor application to walls, 2K cementitious products (which need to be mixed with water or dispersion) may be used. However, paste-like adhesives based on liquid dispersions are oftentimes recommended, thanks to their ease of application.

TestingThe bonding properties are tested in a bonding test or in a shear test. For both tests the value > 0,5 N/mm² needs to be reached for the product to meet the DIN EN 12004

For the bonding strength test below, the tile adhesive was applied to an earthenware tile and pressed on a concrete slab. The shear test, on the other hand, was carried out in accordance with DIN EN 12004.

The wet shear adhesion, which is the most critical test to achieve a D2 classification, is more difficult to pass with calcium carbonate paste. Synthomer‘s new dispersion, Axilat™ L 8761, is suitable to attain a D2 classification for water resistance in both silica and calcium carbonate based formulations.

As such, Recryl L 8761 heralds the onset of a new generation of polymer dispersion for CTAs that meet highest demands in most challenging contexts.
