WeareexcitedtopresentanotherYoungPeople’sConcertwithNettaHadariasourMaestro,alongwithourvaluedyouthparticipantsandNewBritainSymphonymusicians.OneofthemostimportantmissionsoftheNewBritainSymphonyistoofferthisconcertforthebenefitofourfifthgraders,welcomingthemtowhatwelookforwardtoasacontinuedventureinbeautifulmusicduringtheirlives.Thecontinuedcollaborationamongadministrators,music,artandfifth-gradeteachersfromtheNewBritain,Berlin,PlainvilleandNewingtonpublic,parochialandprivateschools,isavaluedpartofourprogram.Withsuchcooperationandsupportfromoureducatorsandfunders,thedoorsareopenforourstudentstoappreciatethemusicofaliveorchestra.PreparationfortheseconcertstakesplaceinschoolswithteachersusingthisHandbookpreparedespeciallyforthisevent.Withinourprogramthespotlightshinesonwinnersofthe“WhatMusicMeanstoMe”EssayandArtPostercontests.TheworksofthePostercontestwinnerswillbefeaturedthisyearataspecialexhibitattheNewBritainPublicLibraryduringthemonthofApril.Inaddition,duringtheconcert,astudentintheaudiencewillbechosentoconducttheorchestraforJohnPhilipSousa’s“StarsandStripesforever.”

WhatIsASymphony?Sym:“with” Phony:“soundsofanykind”
Symphony:“soundingtogether” Asymphonyorchestraisagroupofmusiciansplayinginstrumentsthatbelongtothestring,woodwind,brass,andpercussionfamilies.Asymphonyorchestracanplaymanytypesofmusicbutmostoftenperformsclassicalmusic.
AbouttheConcertmaster
TheConcertmasteristheleaderoftheviolinsectionoftheorchestraandisthelastmusiciantoenterthestage.Heorshestandsfacingtheorchestraandgivestheoboeplayerthesignaltosoundthepitchof“A”.Thisisthepitchusedbymusiciansfortuningtheirinstruments.WatchasourConcertmastercarriesouthis/herresponsibilities.
ResponsibilitiesofaConductor
TheConductorofanorchestraislikethecaptainofateam.Ineveryfineorchestra,eachmemberisanexcellentmusician,amasterofhisorherinstrument.Eachmusicianisanindividualwithallthedifferencesthatexistamongmembersofanygroup.However,theminutetheconductorraisesthebaton,allthesefinemusiciansbecomelikeoneinstrumentthroughwhichtheconductorpresentsmusic.Theconductormusthavetheabilitytobeagoodleader,seeingthatthemusiciansplaywithprecision,balance,andwiththesamemusicalintention.Theconductorselectstheprogram,rehearsestheorchestra,andshapesthemusiccollaborativelywiththeorchestramusicianswithhishands,arms,andfacialexpressions.

NettaHadari
NettaHadaricomesfromamusicalfamily.HehasplayedinconcerthallsinJapan,Israel,Italy,Portugal,andtheUS,asatouringviolinsoloist.Duringhisvariedmusicalcareer,NettahelpedleadMusicHaven,anon-profitorganization,fromstart-uptomaturityasDevelopmentDirector,foundedhisownconductorlesschamberorchestra-theLiveMusicProject-andeducatedandmentoredmanyyoungpeopleasmusicdirectoroftheGreaterNewHavenYouthOrchestraandasprofessorandorchestradirectoratFairfieldUniversity.Currently,NettaistheconductoroftheStringOrchestraatChoateRosemaryHallandwasappointedInterimOrchestralDirectorandViolinProfessoratMountHolyokeCollegein2018.HeisexcitedtobeworkingwithMaestroNgTianHuiandthePioneerValleySymphonyasInterimAssistantConductorduringthe2018-19season.NettaholdsaBachelor'sdegreeinmusicfromSouthernMethodistUniversitywherehestudiedwithEmanuelBorok,andaMaster'sdegreeandArtistDiplomafromtheYaleSchoolofMusicstudyingwithSyokoAki.AtYale,heearnedtheHoratioParkeraward–thehighestawardpresentedtoastudentattheschool.Inhissparetime,heenjoysreading,cooking,andcomposingchildren’ssongs.HeisexcitedtobeworkingwiththeNewBritainSymphonyontheireducationalprogramsanddevelopingtheirpresenceinthecommunitythisyear.HeliveswithhiswifeandtwodaughtersinNewHaven.WhenNettaHadarientersthestageforourYoungPeople’sConcert,pleasewelcomehimwithyourapplause.Remember,hewillbethelastperformertowalkontothestage.

AbouttheProgram
WeattheNewBritainSymphonyarehonoredtopresenttoyouandyourstudentsthisyear’sYoungPeople'sConcert.Theprogramisdesignedtobeanintroductiontotheorchestra,toconnectthevastarrayofdifferentculturesthatwehaveinourcommunitiestomusic,andtofindcommonalitiesthroughmusicinourexperiencesasAmericans.ThechoiceofAmericanmusicspecificallyisintendedtocomplementthechildren’ssimultaneousstudyofAmericanhistoryinschool.WhatisAmericanMusic?ThediversityofAmericanmusicisreflectedinourcommonexperiencesasAmericans–acountryofimmigrants.Fromfiddlingtofilmmusic,theexperiencesofAfricanAmericansthroughJazz,andLatinoculturesthroughtheiruniquerhythmsandpercussion,Hip-Hop,andfolksongs,ourcountryhasperhapsthemostdiversemusic.WestartwiththemusicofJohnWilliams,themostprolificandfamousofallfilmcomposerswithcreditssuchasHarryPotter,StarWars,Jaws,andE.T.TohonorStarWars,anditsinfluenceacrossculturesandacrossgenerations,webeginourprogramwiththisiconicmusic.JohnWilliamsalsoputsatmemorablecaptoourprogramwhentheNewBritainSymphonyperformstheSymphonicSuitefromHarryPotter.AaronCopland’smusicisfeaturedprominentlyinourprogram,ashismusicisinfluencedfrommanysourcesofAmerica–cowboyfiddlemusicin“HoeDown”,brassfanfaresin“FanfarefortheCommonMan”,andAmericanfolksongsinhis“VariationsonaShakerMelody”.OurNewBritainSymphonystringsectionwillgettoshowtheirhip-hopstylewith“KlapUrHandz”.ThispiecebyHaitian-Americanviolinistandcomposer,DanielBernardRoumain,isfromalargerworkforstringquartetbasedonthestoryandlifeofRosaParks,theiconiccivilrightsactivist.WilliamGrantStill,anAfrican-Americancomposerfromthetwentiethcentury,drawsfromhisrootswithhis“AfroAmerican”Symphony.Inatimewhenjazzwasemergingasaseriousartform,Stillincorporatesthesejazzsoundsinaclassicalsymphony.LeonardBernstein,wasatoweringfigureinAmericanmusicallifeasaconductorandcomposeruntilhisdeathin1990.Theopera/musical“WestSideStory,”acontemporarytellingofRomeoandJuliet,isoneofhismostcelebratedworks.ItpresentsauniqueandnaturalblendofAmericansong,classicalartmusic,jazz,andCubanmambo.Getreadyforsomeaudienceparticipation!Lastly,noJuly4theventiscompletewithoutarousingmarchbyJohnPhilipSousa–“StarsandStripesForever”!Thankyouverymuchforpreparingyourstudentsforthisveryexcitingevent.
