SkillsBasedLearningTheskillofeffectiveCommunicationisatthecoreofalllearningandisdevelopedinaprogressivewaythroughReading,Writing,TalkingandListeninginEnglishlessonsandreinforcedacrossallsubjects.PupilsareencouragedtotakecarewiththeirSpelling,GrammarandPunctuationandtotaketimetolookovertheirworktoensureitisatalltimesneat,withlegiblehandwritingandinlinewitheachsubjectteacher’sexpectations.Similarly,pupils’abilityinUsingMathematics,taughtprimarilythroughMathematics,isdevelopedandconsolidatedacrossthecurriculum.Theschoolhasawell-structuredprogrammetoensurepupilsconsolidatetheirexistingICTskillsanddeveloptheircapabilitytosolveproblemsusingvarioussoftwarepackages,thereforeprovidingthefoundationforcrosssubjectreinforcementandprogression.ICTistaughtthroughtimetabledICTclassesinYear8andeachpupil’sskillinUsingICTisdevelopedthroughoutarangeofcurricularsubjectsinKeyStage3.TheNorthernIrelandCurriculumhasidentifiedthedevelopmentofThinkingSkillsandPersonalCapabilitiesascentraltoenablingpupilstobecomeeffectivelearnersacrossallsubjects.Theseskillsencouragepupils’abilitytothinkbothcriticallyandcreativelyandtodeveloppersonalandinterpersonalskillsanddispositions,whichhelpthemintheirlearning.Thefiveskillsare:•ManagingInformation•Thinking,Problem-Solving&Decision-Making•BeingCreative•WorkingwithOthers•Self-Management

ThisacademicyearweareparticularlyfocusingontheThinking,ProblemSolving&DecisionMakingskillsofourstudents.Pupilsacquireallfiveskillsthroughallsubjects.WeencourageourstudentstodevelopaGrowthMindset-encouragingpupilstounderstandtheirfullpotentialforsuccessandthathardworkandregularpracticebringimprovementsinintelligence.
AssessmentandReporting
Assessmentisanintegralpartoftheschoolcurriculum.Teachersassesspupils’progressinYear8,bothinanongoingway,referredtoasAssessmentforLearning,aswellasinasummativeway,whichisAssessmentofLearning.
BaselineTestingMIDYISAtthebeginningoftheAutumnTerm,allpupilsinYear8aregiventheopportunitytotaketheMiddleYearsInformationSystem(MIDYIS)test.ThisisanaptitudetestadministeredbytheUniversityofDurham,takenbymanythousandsofpupilseachyearacrosstheUKwiththepurposeofhelpingteacherssettargetsandmonitorpupilperformanceintheJuniorSchool.ItconsistsofanumberofmultiplechoicequestionsbasedontheareasofVocabulary,MathematicsandPatterns.Pupils’progressinEnglishandMathsisalsoassessedandmonitoredcloselythroughtheProgresstestsProgressTowardsMaths(PTM)ANDProgressTowardsEnglish(PTE)

AssessmentforLearning
AssessmentforLearningisverymuchintegratedintopupils’everydaylearning.Itispartoftheteachingprocessusedtodeveloppupils’knowledgeandunderstanding.Itmay,forexample,taketheformofindependentorgrouptasks,classdiscussion,homework,projectwork,smallclassorunittestsorteacherobservationofpupilparticipationasanindividualoraspartofagroup.InkeepingwiththerationaleoftheRevisedNICurriculum,pupilsarealsoencouragedtobefullyinvolvedintheirlearning,toreviewtheirworkandsettargetsforimprovement,therebyfosteringself-responsibilityandindependence.
AssessmentofLearningInmostsubjectspupilshavesummativeorendoftopic/unittests,whichgiveteachers,parentsandstudentsagoodmeasureoftheirprogressandunderstandingineachsubject.
SchoolExaminations
PupilssitSchoolExaminationsinDecemberandagainattheendofMaywhentheyareofftimetableforaweek.Copiesoftheschoolexaminationsarepostedonthewebsiteandcopiesaresenthomewithstudentsalongwiththeirrevisionguidesandstudyskillsadvice.
ReportingParentsreceiveareportoftheirson/daughter’sperformancefollowingboththeChristmasandMay/Juneexaminations.TheWinterReportreportsthepupil’sownpercentageachievementandtheclassaveragepercentageforeachsubject.Parentsalsoreceiveanumericaldescriptor(1-4)oftheirson/daughter’sclasseffortandqualityofworkforeachsubject.InadditiontopercentagemarksreflectingperformanceandclassaverageintheMay/Juneexams,theendofyearAnnualReportprovidesparentswithacommentonpupilprogressandachievementovertheyearineachsubject.
TargetSettingandActionPlanning
InkeepingwiththerationaleoftherevisedNIcurriculum,pupilsarealsoencouragedtobefullyinvolvedintheirlearning,toreviewtheirworkandsettargetsforimprovement,therebyfosteringself-responsibilityandindependence.Eachyear,followingthewinterandsummerschoolexaminations,pupilstaketimeintheirFormClasstoreviewtheirperformanceinallsubjectsandsettargetsforimprovement.

PupilsinYear8havesixperiodsofEnglishperweek;oneoftheseisadedicatedLibraryperiod.Pupilsareencouragedtoreadforpleasureandtodeveloptheircuriosityandinterestinlearningthroughtheuseofnon-fictiontexts,magazinesandnewspapers.Throughplannedschemesofworkforeachnovel,pupilsengageinarangeofReading,WritingandTalkingandListeningexercises.Pupilshavetheopportunitytoreadadramatextandtostudypoetryfromananthologybooklet.PupilsusededicatedworkbooksonSpelling,PunctuationandGrammarwithspellingssetandtestedonaweeklybasis.AllpupilsareencouragedtoenterthemanycompetitionstheEnglishDepartmentsupportsincludingBustaRhymeandBBCYoungWritersCompetitions.Additionally,pupilswillhavemanyopportunitiestodisplayandexhibittheirworkintheclassroomandintheschoolnewsletterAllstudentsareencouragedtotakepartinourmonthly‘LiteracyChallenge’;apostercontainingtheliteracyfocusandrelevantdetailsareemailedhomeeverymonth.Thisisagreatwayforyourchildtodeveloptheirliteracyskillsandanopportunityforthemtoreceiveliteracyachievementpointswhichrewardtheirendeavours.EnglishDepartmentExtraCurricularactivities:JuniorBookClub,DebatingClubandDramaclub.
