The book starts with an unnamed black cat investigating the run-down former living quarters of the wizard Merlin of Arthurian legend… The book tells of Merlin… falling in love with Nimue, the Lady of the Lake. It is revealed that the black cat is Nimue and the owl is Merlin. The couple return to their natural forms and resume their love affair… [Later] a bolt from the wand strikes Merlin and traps him in a magical prison. Merlin's last magical act is to rescind Nimue's human form, and she becomes the water of the lake near the cave where Merlin is trapped. The two are destined to remain trapped, though near each other, until 'the seeker' (referring to the reader) casts 'the spell' (the solution to the puzzle) and causes the wand (the reward for solving the puzzle) to appear.” (Anon. 2017) The British composer-performer here, Julia Taylor-Stanley, known for film and television composing, was working in Tintagel, the reputed birthplace of the medieval King Arthur. “The album enters ’The Cave’ with a marked return to the instrumental soundtrack style. The song contains a vast array of different moods and heightens the mystery theme.” (Elliot 1998) The general idea of mystery is conveyed but it hard to hear any connections with Merlin's Cave. There are sounds of sea gulls and a passing jet plane. In second part of the piece the strings reach a crescendo and then the synthesizer returns to its mysterious ramblings. THE CAVE BEYOND THE CAVE WHAT IS THE CAVE? NA – Ambient – Vocal Comp: Carolyn HILLYER

Perf: Carolyn HILLYER Prod: Carolyn Hillyer & Nigel Shaw

Prod. Co: Second Wave Productions; Totnes, Devon Time: (Tk 4) 4:53 & (Tk 7) 7:43 CD: CAVE OF ELDERS: A SOUL JOURNEY FOR WOMEN

Second Wave HTWCD05 (Tks 4 & 7) Notes: The album is described as – “A powerful and profound journey into the Cave, an intimate underworld, a hidden landscape of the soul. A journey of music formed by voices alone, but without words, voices that give form and song to the ancient Elders, our primeval mothers, who guide and urge us down through the chambers of the Cave, through Blood and Bone and Ash and Night and Moon. A sacred meditation, a raw act of magic. A place where the traveller may experience the journey inward and the journey of return.” (Liner Notes) “This album was recorded live and improvised, over four days and nights. In an unusual departure from the songs and chants for which she has become well known, Carolyn has created a work using voice as the only instrument. A music landscape of many voices interwoven in complex layers giving expression to the ancient women Elders who dwell within our mythic underworld, the territory of the soul, the Cave.” “The map of this Cave describes six levels; BLOOD (The Journey Inward), BONE (The Descent), ASH (A Distant Place), THE CAVE-BEYOND-THE-CAVE (The Rising), MOON (The Journey of Returning), with a seventh piece entitled WHAT IS THE CAVE?” (Anon. 2010) This music has not been heard. A CAVE IN ENGLAND * NA – Nature Sounds – Synthesizer – Instrumental – Recorded in Cave Comp: LARAAJI [aka. Laraaji Nanananda]

American CD: FLOW GOES THE UNIVERSE (1992) All Saints CAROL 6602-2 (Tk 3) Notes: A cave in England – decidedly an active stream cave, but the question is which cave and where? This is New Age music where the cave plays a very dominant role for long stretches. Fading up from silence with 48 seconds of sounds of a running stream becoming more and more present, the synth-music comes in backed by falling sheets of water echoing in a cave passage and a rushing cave stream (these sounds were recorded live in the cave) – very much the feel of a serious water cave.

The harp sounds of the synth break off and the waters in the cave prevail again. Until halfway through he comes back with the harp runs, which carry us for two minutes. At certain points one can hear the very distant mummers of cavers' voices muffled by the rushing waters. Then for intermittent stretches more harp runs return and recede over the sounds of the cave. Finally, the cave waters fade as does the music and there is only silence. See also under Recorded in Natural Caves – United Kingdom. The incomplete audio-video sample uses photos from caves over the world ranging from Rumbling Falls Cave, Tennessee to the Seven Star Cave in China to other unidentified caves. CAVERNS OF TRANQUILLITY NA – Synthesizer – Instrumental – Recorded in Natural Cave Comp: Julian MENDELSOHN

Gong For A Song GFS 045 (Tk 2)

2. CD: THE MOUNTAIN STREAM Gong For A Song GFS 041002 (Tk 2)

Notes: A Himalayan mountain stream runs down to pools and waterfalls. "The power of the water builds to form its own path where it plunges into the tranquil caverns underground. New sounds take to the air as if in nature's own cathedrals the voices of nature are blended in song with the meandering waters." (Liner notes) The sound of running water from the previous track follows right into this track and suddenly the water is heard echoing in a cave chamber as synthesizer melodies with a distinct Japanese feeling are worked out to a gentle rhythm. Occasionally a distant cry or a squawking or chirping bird can be heard. Then wind in the pine trees and other bird songs are heard as, about halfway through, the melody finally fades and we hear only the water running outside now and more bird song. Then the synthesizer returns with a different melody. The birds continue to sing, the wind comes in gusts, and the water sounds fade somewhat until all is light wind and a moody keyboard progression. It ends with water still flowing and bird song, which follows over into the next track. On the 2006 reissue CD on the Vanilla OMP label this piece is entitled, Caverns of Crystal Cascades. SOUNDTRACKS SAMPLER (2004) Ble (?) (Tk 3) Notes: This suite of 10 selections, reminiscent of the New Age music of Vangelis or Jean Michel Jarre, is offered as “a musical journey through Merlin’s Cave…It’s an adventure where you are led by Merlin’s hand past dark stalactites, beautiful haunting melodies of underground streams…and into his crystalline world of inner light.” (Liner Notes) However, the titles of only two of the pieces indicate that they were inspired by caves. Track 6 is given the vague title, “Explorers.” ENCHANTED CAVERNS – The 30-second Internet audio clip provided eerie, high-pitched tones that float and soar in the distance. MERLIN’S CAVE – Prolonged organ tones are followed by light keyboard runs that set the theme. There are at least two known caves in the United Kingdom named, Merlin’s Cave, one on the north coast of Cornwall and another in South Wales on the west bank of the River Wye. MERLIN'S CAVE * NA – Nature Sounds – Synthesizer – Instrumental Comp. & Arr: Medwyn GOODALL Rts: Silver Wings Publ./Oreade Music

Perf: Medwyn GOODALL (keyboards &

percussion) (Natural sounds of cave interior) Prod. Co: Oreade Music; Aerdenhout, Holland Rec. Co: Medwyn Goodall Liner Notes: Anon. Time: 7:28 CD: TINTAGEL, CASTLE OF ARTHUR TINTAGEL CAVE – F. Frith postcard photo Oreade Music OMM 5220-2 (Tk 1) Notes: Part of the "Myths & Mysteries of the World" series, the inspiration for this album was King Arthur and his court, his legendary birthplace at Tintagel Castle, and the nearby Merlin's Cave (also called Tintagel Cave) on the north coast of Cornwall. For more information about Merlin’s Cave see under Cave Picture Covers – United Kingdom. This is volume 4 of a collection of albums celebrating the Arthurian tales. The liner notes describe this selection – "In the bay by the castle there is the entrance to a deep, mysterious cave. Another legend speaks of Merlin discovering young Arthur who was washed ashore here." In Alfred Tennyson’s Idylls of the King Merlin stood on the beach beside the cave entrance with the infant Arthur raised high in his arms. There is another Merlin's Cave in South Wales on the west bank of the River Wye (Oldham & Jones 1995). Medwyn Goodall has his home and studio in Cornwall. He taught himself to play several instruments and claims music influences from Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, and Dire Straits. Beginning with sounds recorded in the cave where we hear the sea breaking on the shore outside and steady drops of water falling, Goodall comes in on keyboards with a lilting, magical theme with long flights of fantasy. Further along in the composition there is a string section that conveys a certain regal splendor. Medwyn Goodall has composed and recorded two other cave-inspired New Age pieces: see just above, Lonely Caverns, and also under Spain – Sacromonte Caves. CD: UNDERWORLD Paras Recording PRC 1104 (Tk 3) Notes: “This ensemble combines Celtic textures and new ambient rhythms and atmospheres in this nod to the home of ‘Celtic gods, poets, sages and druids.’ It is a veritable hotbed of Celtic legend and mythology. (The liner notes relate some of the myths in great detail.)” (Brenholts 2017) DAGDA is an ancient Irish name for the chief of the Celtic gods. This Celtic (?) trance group should not be confused with the Hungarian acoustic Celtic group that plays Scottish and Irish music. MERLIN’S CAVE – Yet another New Age piece (actually closer to ambient music) inspired by the real or mythical Merlin’s Cave. The audio sample had nothing that sounded Celtic, instead it began with a large choral synth sound and some brief flute phrases. The beat picks up and later there are intermittent percussion clashing. More distant flute phrases and synth keyboard variations right to the end. Some record database sites have track 5, “Dawn at Druid’s Cove,” on this album listed incorrectly as “Dawn at Druid’s Cave.” Ref: Brenholts, Jim 2017, Dagda, Underworld CD, Allmusic (◄AUDIO SAMPLE) Dagda, Bio, Owl Records, womex Dagda, Merlin’s Cave, (5:48), YouTube (◄COMPLETE AUDIO SAMPLE) Dagda, Underworld CD, Discogs

Comp: Steve THOMAS

Perf: Steve THOMAS (synthesizer) Prod: Steve Thomas E-mail: [email protected] Prod Co: Musicave Production Rec. Co: Small Trees Studio; Wales Liner Notes: (8-page booklet) Anon. Time: (See above) CD: MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TO THE MOON Photo by Amanda Thomas Heliotrinox HTX 9701 (Tks 1-15) (PC-RE) Notes: An entire album of New Age music, written by a British cave diver, wholly inspired by caving and, in particular, cave diving. The inference behind the title is that there are some horrendously difficult-to-reach places in some underwater caves which only a select few cave divers have ever explored whereas already (between 1969 & 1972) fourteen astronauts have walked on the Moon and have spent all told 332 hours on its surface. (Frémy 1985) All the sound effects here were recorded in caves and all diving sounds were recorded under water within cave sump passages. 1. MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TO THE MOON – Starting with a distant rumble, the sound of a diver maneuvering in a cave water passage, a garbled, distorted voice, the organ chords lead to a voice in

a space launch command center giving the counting down – "We have lift-off!" – wherein the rapid main theme kicks in on keyboards and bass. Then the same space center voice comes back under the bass chords and drums and the selection ends with the sounds of the diver in the water passage. 2. SNOW MELT – The flow in cave water passages can change hourly from a trickle to flood state due to a downpour or snow melt. – Setting down a solemn organ chords, high notes are picked out on the keyboard and an easy rhythm comes in behind some lyrical passages. 3. SPACE HAZE – The idea of murky waters surrounded by black darkness. – Sounds of a caver in a passage, short indistinct conversation lead to energy rhythms and a nervous theme worked out in the middle register. It ends with the sound of air bubbles rising in the water. 4. CONNECTIONS – Making caves connect by diving sumps. – Backed by a metallic percussion, a flowing melody is threaded in and out of other melodies. 5. THE AQUANAUTS – More sounds of water and an ominous theme leads to an ultra rapid rhythm and keyboard progression. 6. SOLO – Vast, expanding chords with a background of bubbling sounds create the feeling of solo exploration. 7. PUSHING THE VOID – Up-beat, rhythmic harmonies progress throughout in a happy mood. 8. 200 BAR BLUES – Air pressure in the bottles are checked in the hope that they are not down to 200 bars. – The organ works out a typical blues piece against a skittish rhythm. It ends with the sounds of rushing water in a passage where two cavers are having a short exchange about cave conditions – "There's more water down there." 9. MICHAELA – Inspired by a beautiful friend, one of the selfless people who helped carry heavy and bulky diving kit many miles underground. – An ample, melodic organ theme with nostalgic overtones is joined by a gay percussion and a playful keyboard.

10. MELLOW PEBBLES – Through sculptured tunnels with eroded rocks. – Water drops introduce a background with a country feeling followed by a light keyboard and a harmonica, which carry the piece into a mellow vein. 11. ETHER BLACK – Long, ominous synth-sounds echo in a hollow space. 12. MERCURIAL SPHERES – Divers rhythmically release a trail of shinny air bubbles, which disappear into invisible places and with these spheres go heat and air. Gone forever. – One of the most visual pieces here. High, rapid, silvery runs on keyboard that closely mimic rising air bubbles are laid over a pounding, insistent rhythm. Low chords on organ weave in behind and then a bass pan flute plays a few notes until all ends with only trickling water. 13. HIGH PLANES DRIFTER – "…the Aquanaut may be going to a place where nobody has ever been – a true explorer in a world where to be the first to see and touch will soon be an extraterrestrial affair." – Trickling water,

organ chords, and a dance beat take the organ on a bluesy romp, leading to an ethereal bridge and onward. 14. HEARTBEAT (INTO THE DARK) – Flowing water brings in long hymn-like organ chords and then ponderous drumbeats, higher whistling notes, and languorous chords with quick woodwind flurries. 15. THE JOURNEY HOME – Sounds of air bubbles and low notes on harp strings run into rapid plucking then a nervous metallic brushes rhythm is set on cruse course. The keyboard comes in with a nervous theme and finally the guitar carries the melody to a mellow finish. The acknowledgement list in the liner notes reads like a roster of many of the British cavers and cave divers active around the turn of the century. “The album sold out within its first year of being released and was re-pressed in 1998 and again in 1999. A new pressing for 2001 in imminent.” Ref: Anon., Descent, n. 136, June-July 1997 and n. 137, Aug.-Sept. 1997, p. 19 Bunnell, Dave 1997, Spelemedia, NSS News, Dec. 1997, p. 382 Frémy, Dominique & Michéle 1985, Quid 1986, Robert Laffont, Paris, p. 42 Steve Thomas, Bio & Film/TV History, musicave.co.uk Steve Thomas, More People Have Been to the Moon CD, musicave.co.uk Steve Thomas, More People Have Been to the Moon, 9 Reviews, musicave.co.uk

LP: NEW ATLANTIS Polydor Super 2383-434 (stereo) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 4)

Notes: A very early example of what came to be known as New Age music. The album was inspired by excerpts from the essay, "The New Atlantis," written by Francis Bacon in 1624. It is a visionary fable which contrasts the ideal, scientifically advanced society of an island called Bensalem (located somewhere in the Pacific between Peru and China) with the inferiority of European society. This track is drawn from an excerpt that talks about the high towers at Bensalem, "the highest about half a mile in height," and also about the artificial caves – We have large and deep caves of several depths; the deepest are sunk six hundred fathoms; and some of them are digged (sic) and made under great hills and mountains … These caves we call the lower regions, and we use them for all coagulations, indurations, refrigerations, and conservations of bodies. We use them likewise for the imitation of natural mines, and the producing also of new artificial metals. We use them also sometimes … for the curing of some diseases, and for prolongation of life, in some hermits that choose to live there …

Wavemaker was a “London based pioneering synthesizer / instrumental duo of the mid-1970s. John Lewis, Bachelor of Music, composer, studied advanced composition with Hans Werner Henze in Rome. Brian Hodgson, 10 years at BBC Radiophonic Workshop - a pioneer of synthesizer techniques.” (Anon. 2017) The notes give a whole list of the electronic equipment used: keyboard & memory bank, oscillators, filters, envelope shapers, etc. The music consists of rambling passages on an organ-like instrument. Well into the piece there is some kettle drumming and gong clashing. The tension on keyboards mounts at the end.
