Kimberly Churches, pictured above, Chief Executive Officer of AAUW, will deliver the keynote address at the AAUW Louisiana annual convention in Lafayette Saturday, April 14.
Churches joined AAUW as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer in June 2017.
Previously, Churches worked at the Brookings Institution, the University of Denver, the University of North Florida, and the American Heart Association. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Florida State University.
She currently serves as chair of the BUILD D.C. board.
Churches is the mother of an elementary school aged daughter.

Valerie Jackson Jones, above center, AAUW Baton Rouge Board Member, is a member of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome’s Women’s Advancement Commission. Established to address the needs of women and girls of East Baton Rouge Parish, the Commission will explore opportunities to improve the lives and status of women and girls through public policy, service delivery and the promotion of cultural norms that advance equity, equality and safety. Commission members will use their expertise to consider how City-Parish government can promote policies and services that address the needs of women and their families in our parish. CAMPUS STUDY No meeting in March

The February Campus Study luncheon and speaker event was so well attended that a larger room than usual was required. Above left, Blaine Dzwonczyk spoke about her experiences working for social justice at Tufts University and in Mountain View, CA; Mary Beth Bird was a guest; Dr. Victor Klimash, president of the more than 100-year-old Baton Rouge Music Club, spoke about the club’s activities including providing scholarships to music students in our area; Also shown is June Klimash, Campus Study Chair.

Spring Pilgrimage 2018
Valerie Jackson-Jones has let us know that the Pilgrimage will begin Saturday, March 17. She offers to organize an outing to Elms Court (1837-1853) on either Saturday, March 17; Sunday, March 25; or Saturday, April 14. The house will be open from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 Noon. Valerie suggests that participants could carpool and leave Baton Rouge at 8:30 a.m.to arrive for 9:30 a.m.to tour the home and gardens with lunch in Natchez before returning to Baton Rouge. Valerie mentions that there is seating available should anyone tire. Cost for the home tour is $15 for a single home. If there is another home individuals would like to tour, please let Valerie know. Valerie asks that you contact her by March 5 if you have an interest in making this trip or if you have questions.

SPEAK Out! Day FOR HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, SHAPE America’s member advocacy event was February 13-14, 2018, in Washington, D.C. Our own JiJi Jonas was among more than 150 health and physical education advocates from 42 states. (See Jonas front and center in a red coat.) Participants met with members of Congress in support of health and physical education.
