INTRODUCTIONPhilosophyConcordiaSchoolsisaministrycommunitywhichincludesclergy,schoolstaff,parents andstudents. Effortshavebeenmadetomakethisdocumentrepresentativeofallwhocomprisethis community. ConcordiaAcademydoesnotexistinisolation.Werecognizeourroleandfunctioninlightofalarger congregationalcommunity,thelocalcommunityandtheLutheranChurch-MissouriSynod.TheRoleoftheStaffTheWordofGodisthebasisforChristianEducation. Thechallengesetbeforeusistoestablishanatmosphereforlearninginwhichwecommunicate(1)whoweareasindividuals,aswellas,(2)howwefunctionasafaithcommunity-bothgivingwitnesstoChrist.Itisimperativethat,withparentsaspartners,effortsaremadetokeepthecentralfocusonaChristcenteredphilosophy. OurLordcommandedthatweloveoneanotherandmakedisciplesofallpeople.Wepermeatethismessagewithmethodsandmaterials,whichtakeintoconsiderationtheworldfrom whichthestudentcomes,aswellastheworldinwhichthestudentwillfunctionasayoungadult.Webelievethateffectiveeducationincorporatesaspectsofspiritualgrowth,intellectualawareness, socialtraining,emotionaloutletsandphysicalstimulation. Qualitylearningexperiencesrelatethe Christianfaithtolifeexperiencesofthechildren.TheRoleoftheParentsWebelievetheacademic,moral,emotional,physicalandspiritualgrowthofchildrentobeaministrythatbeginsathome.Therefore,parentsaretheprimaryeducatorsoftheirchildren.Thecoordinatedefforts byparentsandstaffareneededtoreinforcetherelationshipbetweenparent,schoolandchild. Together wearepartnerseffectivelybalancingthelifeofhomeandschool.ConcordiaAcademyseekstocollaboratewithparentsforthebenefitofthestudent. We striveto“cometogetherinonenessinourfaithandinourknowledgeoftheSonofGod...sowerun straighttowardsthegoalinordertowintheprize,whichisGod’scallthroughChristJesustothelife above.” Phil.3:14TheRoleoftheStudentsWerecognizethatweareallsinners,redeemedthroughthegraceofGod,whoseektolearnthroughthedoctrineofLawandGospel. Webelievethatacquiringknowledgeanddevelopingskillstowardsself-discipline,maturity,andintellectualgrowtharetheprimaryresponsibilitiesofthestudent.Inaworldofincreasingtechnologyandself-fulfillment,itisimperativetothinklogically,creativelyandcritically. Weutilizecreativemethodsofdiscoveryandscientificapproachestoexperimentationtogain thebasicsofknowledge,improvecommunicationskills,andtoappreciatethecontributioninherentin ourculturallydiversecommunity.. ACCREDITATIONConcordiaAcademyisaccreditedbyNationalLutheranSchoolAccreditation.ThecurriculummeetstherequirementsoftheStateofNebraska andtheguidelinesforLutheranschools. ConcordiaAcademyisrecognizedbytheStateofNebraska.
ACHIEVEMENTTESTSStudentscompleteon-linetestinginthefallandspringthroughNorthwestEvaluationAssociation(NWEA).Thistestingmeasuresthecontinuousgrowthofeachchild.Resultsarereportedtoparentssothattheyareawareoftheirchild'sacademicprogress.
ADMISSIONSNewStudents:AllnewfamilieswillbeputincontactwithourDirectorofAdmissionsforinformationregardingtheschool.ThoseinterestedinapplyingforConcordiawillfollowtheonlineprocessusingTADS.A linktotheprocesscanbefoundonourwebsiteatconcordiaomaha.org.Entranceagerequirementsareasfollows:Kindergarten:Mustbefive(5)yearsofageonorbeforeJuly30ofcurrent schoolyear.Childrenwhohaveattendedacertifiedkindergartenorattended kindergarteninCaliforniamayenter1st
grade.NewStudentInterview: Allnewstudentsandtheirparentsmaybeaskedto interviewwiththecampusprincipalaspartoftheTADSprocess.Thismayhappenduringaschooltourorduringaseparatelyestablishedmeeting. Thepurposeistobeginstrengtheningthehome-schoolpartnershipandbestunderstandhowConcordiacanhelpinthiseducationalpartnership. Thisisnotatestofqualificationforthechild.

Testing: Newstudentsmayberequiredtohaveaschoolreadinessdevelopmentalscreeningassessmentoranentrancetestbeforecompletingtheenrollmentprocess. Oncetheinterviewprocessandtestinghavebeencompleted,parentswillbenotifiedconcerningthe acceptanceoftheirchildintoConcordiaAcademy.NewStudentProbation:Allnewlyacceptedstudentsareplacedonacademicandconductprobation duringthefirstquartertheyattendConcordia. Attheendofthefirstsemester,theprincipalmayextendthelengthoftheprobationaryperiodoraskthestudenttoleaveConcordia.PrioritiesforAcceptance:Re-enrollmentoccursduringJanuary,whencurrentConcordiafamilieshaveachancetosecureenrolledstatusfortheupcomingschoolyear.Duringthistime,registrationisconsideredcompleteandenrollmentissecuredoncetheapplicationiscompletedandregistrationfeeispaid.Failuretore-enrollduringthisperiodmayresultintheforfeitureofenrolledstatus. Whilenewapplicationsarewelcomedatanytime,theywillnotbeofficiallyconsidereduntiltheendofre-enrollmentperiod.Afterthere-enrollmentperiodforreturningstudentsiscomplete,newapplicantsforadmissionareconsideredonthebasisofenrollmentprioritiesthatareestablishedbytheadministration:
• Siblingsofmemberandcommunitychildrencurrentlyenrolledinschool• Newstudentsfromassociationmembercongregationswithoutsiblingscurrentlyenrolled• Newcommunitystudentswithoutachurchhome• Othernewnon-memberstudents
Ifnospaceisavailablefortheappropriategradelevel,theapplicationmaybeplacedonawaitinglist.Allfinaldecisionsrestwithschoolleadership.
ATHLETICPARTICIPATIONPOLICYParticipatinginasportsactivityisawonderfulwaytoextendyourchild’seducation.Wearecommittedtokeepingacademicsasahighpriorityinyourchild’slife.Therefore,thefollowingpolicywilldetermineyourchild’seligibilitytoplayinaschool-sponsoredsport.
a. AthletesmustmaintainaC-ineachsubjectduringtheathleticseason.b. Athletesmustbeinschoolbynoontoparticipateinapracticeoragame.c. Studentbehaviormaycausehim/hertobeineligibleforathleticactivities.d. Ineligibleathletesmaynotparticipateingamesforone(1)week.e. Theathlete’sgradesandorbehaviorwillbereviewedattheendofone(1)weekfromthedatethe
ineligibilitystarted.IfthegradeaveragehasrisentoaC-orbetterineachclasssubject,thestudentwillbeallowedtoreturntopracticeandmayparticipateingames.Iftheathlete’sbehaviorhasimprovedheorshewillbeallowedtoresumepracticeandplay.
f. Studentswhoareineligiblefora combinationofthree(3)weeksduringaseasonshallbeg. declaredineligibleforthe remainderoftherespectiveseason.h. Sportsphysicalsarerequiredbeforestudentscanparticipate.
ATTENDANCEPOLICIESStudentswithmorethan20absenceswillbereviewedforpromotionandmayberetainedif academicprogressdoesn’tmeetstandards. ConcordiaAcademyfollowstheNebraskaattendancepolicy.ProceduresforReportingStudentAbsencesandTardies:Pleasecalloremailtheschoolassoonaspossibletoletusknowofatardyor absence. Ifthereisaplannedabsence,wewouldappreciatepriorknowledge.An answeringsystemisavailablewhenastaffmemberisnotpresenttotakethecall.

ExcusedvsUnexcusedAbsences:Concordiadoesnotconcernitselfwiththedifferenceinabsences.Schoolisimportantandtobevaluedbytheparent,student,andschool.Absentstudentsmisstimewithteachersandclassmatesthatcannotbemadeup.Forthatreason,anabsenceisanabsencewithoutotherdesignation.Plannedabsences(suchas vacations)shouldbecoordinatedwiththeteacherpriortotheabsencesothatimportantworkcanbecompletedinadvanceorduringthetimeaway.
1. Assignmentsmissedmustbemade-up. One(1)daywillbeallowedfor eachdaythatthechildisabsent.Homeworkcanbepickedupattheend oftheschoolday.
2. Whenastudenthasbeenabsentbecauseofillnessforthree(3)ormore days,theymustpresentanotefromtheirdoctorforreadmission.
Note:Usediscretioninsendingyourchildbacktoschoolafteranillnesssuchas theflu,sorethroat,cold,etc.Astudentmustbefever-freefora24-hourperiodbeforereturningtoschool.IfastudentisunabletoparticipateinPE,weneedanote,email,orcallfromthe parentsordoctor.Studentsarenotpermittedtoremaininaclassroomunsupervised.PermissiontoLeaveSchoolGrounds:Ifastudentneedstoleaveduringthedayforappointmentsorfamilymatters,aparentmustentertheschoolandcheckthemoutattheschoolofficepriortothestudentleavingtheschoolgrounds.Note:Undernocircumstancesshouldaparent/guardiangototheclassroomto pickupthestudent. Theymustsignthestudentoutthroughtheoffice.Tardiness:Thebeginningoftheschooldayisanimportanttime. Oftenthetoneofthedayissetin thefirstfewminutes. Studentsneedtobeinclassbeforeitbeginsat8:30a.m.sothat theyhavetimetoorganizethemselvesandsettledowntofocusontheirday. Whena studentarriveslateitcreatesadisruptiontotheclassandcausesthemtomiss instruction.Pleasegodirectlytotheschoolofficetoreceiveanadmissionslipforthedaysothat attendancecanberecordedaccurately.Excessivetardies(fiveormoreperquarter)willresultinthelossofrecesstomake upthetimemissedduringthat quarter.Truancy:NebraskastateregulationsareinforceatConcordiaAcademy.Attendanceatschoolisoneofthemostsignificantaspectsofschoolsuccess. Parentswillnotifythemainschoolofficeat402.592.8005by9:00amonthedayofthechild'sabsence. Studentswhomisstheschooldayduetoillnesswillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinafterschoolactivitiesonthedayoftheabsence.Studentsmustbepresentforanacademichalf-dayfollowingthelunchhourtobeeligibleforextra-curricularactivities–practiceorplay–onthatday. NaturalConsequences:Concordiabelievesinlettingthenaturalconsequencesofanactionbeamotivationforbehaviorchange.Thenaturalconsequenceofbeinglatetoschool/classismissinganyworkthatishandedoutor graded

duringthetimethatthestudentwasnotthere. AllteachersatConcordiamayrefusecredit toworkthatastudentmissedbecauseoftheirtardinesstoclass/school. Exceptionsmaybemadefor familyemergencies,medicalappointments,orotherapprovededucationalappointmentswitha notesignedbytheresponsibleperson. Continuedtardinessmaybehandledas defiance.
AUTOMOBILESIndividualautomobilesmaybeusedtotransportstudentsonschool-relatedactivitiesattheowner’srisk. Insuchcasesthefollowingshouldbedistributedtoalldrivers:Duringthoseinstanceswhenyoudriveyourownvehicleforaschool-relatedactivity,pleasenote thefollowing:• Concordiaexpectsthatnomorepassengerswillbecarriedinthevehiclethanthenumberof available
workingseatbelts.• Allpassengersshouldhavetheirownseatbeltanduseitwhilethevehicleisbeingoperated.• Thedriverofthevehiclemusthaveautoinsurancefortheirvehicle.• Concordiainsurancedoesnotinsurethenon-schoolownedorhiredvehicles. (Inotherwords, shouldan
accidentoccur,thedriver’sinsurancewouldbeused.)• Concordiadoeshaveinsurancetoprotecttheschoolagainstlawsuitsbroughtagainstitshould an
accidentoccurandtheschoolisfoundnegligent.
BUILDINGANDPROPERTYCAREResponsiblestudentstreatpropertywithcareandrespect. Studentsareaccountableforany intentionaloraccidentaldamagetoschoolproperty. Textbooksbecomethestudent’sresponsibility whenissued. Whilenormalwear isexpected, studentswillbe charged replacement costswhen unnecessarydamageoccurs.Studentsmayberequiredtocovertheirbookswithasuitablebookcoverto reducewear.Studentswhoinanywaydamageorloseschoolorchurchequipmentwillbeassessed afee.Feesmustbepaidbytheendoftheyearorstudentgradeswillnot bereleased.
CHAPELStudents attend a weekly chapel service. Offerings are received at chapel to support local, regional andglobalmissions.Parentsarewelcome.ChapelisheldWednesdaymorningat8:45a.m.
CHEATING/PLAGIARISMCheatingisdefinedasusing,submitting,orattemptingtoobtaindataoranswersbydeceitorbymeansotherthanthoseauthorizedbytheteacher. CheatingdoesnotexemplifyChristiancharacter development.Thestudentwhoallowscheatingtotakeplaceisasguiltyasthestudentwhocheats. Becauseworkdonefromcheatingisnotatruereflectionofastudent’sability,cheatingwillresultinthe totallossofcreditonthetestorassignmentforthestudentsinvolved. Theteacherwillnotifyparentsif theirchildisinvolvedincheating. Additionaldisciplinaryactionmayfollowbytheteacheror principal.
CHILDABUSE/NEGLECTInaccordwithConcordiapolicyandNebraskaStateLaw,schoolstaffis obligatedunderpenaltyoffineandjailtermtoreportthereasonablesuspicionofphysicalabuse, emotionalabuse,emotionaldeprivation,physicalneglect,inadequatesupervision,orsexualabuseand exploitation. Inthisveryseriousandlegallynarrowarea,theschoolwillnotcontactparentsinadvance ofmakingareporttolegalauthoritieswhichwouldbetheprocedurefollowedinmostotherlegal matters. Theclearintentofthelaw,basedontheseriousnessofthecrimeslistedabove,istomandate thatareportofreasonablesuspicionofabusebemade. Schoolstaffwillmakesuchreportsinthebest interestsoftheaffectedchildanddonot,once

Theprincipalwillreviewtheacademicprogressofallstudentswhoare involvedinathleticsonaweeklybasis. StudentsearningagradelowerthanaC-dueto missingorincompleteassignmentsoralackofeffort,asconcludedbyteacherandprincipal,maybedeclaredineligibleandplacedonaweeklyreview. Studentswillbeallowedtoparticipateinpractices,buttheycannotwearauniformorplayinthegamesduringthe week. Theprincipalexercisestherighttoreinstateeligibilitywhenrequirementsaremet. Studentswhoareineligibleforacombinationofthree(3)weeksduringaseasonshallbedeclaredineligibleforthe remainderoftherespectiveseason.Theappropriateparticipationformsandfeesmustbeturnedinduringthesign-upperiod priortothestartofeachseason.Astudentwhoisabsentfromschool(unlessitisanapprovededucationalserviceabsence)isineligibletoparticipateinafter-schoolsportsforthatday. COLDWEATHERPOLICYWecloselymonitortheoutdoortemperatureandwindchillfactor. Studentswillgo outsidedailyandshouldcomepreparedbydressingaccordingly. Wegooutsideifthe windchillisabove10andstayinifitis10orbelow.Teachersandtheprincipalwilluse theirowndiscretiononotherweatherrelatedorsafetyissues.

DISCIPLINEPOLICYInanefforttoensurethatstudentsareFaithSecure,WorldReady,KingdomLeaders,weseektoemploydisciplinestrategiesthatpreparestudentsfortheworldwhileprovidingthemremindersthattheyareforgivenchildrenofGod.Itisourgoalthatstudentswilldomostofthethinkingwhenfindingsolutionstotheproblemsthattheycreate.Webelievethatstudentsshouldbegiventheopportunitytomakedecisionsandlivewiththeresults,whethertheconsequencesaregoodorbad.Whenstudentscreateproblemstheywillbeguidedtosolvethoseproblemswithoutmakingproblemsforanyoneelse.Assuch,studentmisbehaviorswillbeaccompaniedbylogicallyconnected,naturalconsequencesinsteadofpunishmentswheneverpossible.Examplesofsuchconsequencesincludelosingtheprivilegetouseanitemthatwasusedimproperlyorunsafely,fixingorreplacingitemsthatarebroken,makingupforlostclasstimeatanotherpointduringtheschoolday,orbeingremovedfromclasswhenbehaviorisdisturbingtheirabilitytolearnorthatoftheirclassmates.Whenastudentrepeatsthesamemisbehaviormultipletimesorcreatesasignificantdisruption,teacherswillcommunicatewithaparent/guardianofthechildandtheprincipalsothattheycanalsopartnerwiththechildtoensuretheproblemissolved.Teachersmayalsousetheirdiscretiontoreferachildtotheprincipalbasedonhisorherbehavior.Theprincipalwillworktosupportthechild,parents,andteacherinfindingasolutiontotheproblemandhastheauthoritytodetain,suspendorwherenecessaryrefertotheHeadofSchoolsorSchoolBoard.Allofficereferralswillresultindocumentationandnotificationtoparents.Insituationswhereadetentionorsuspensionisgiven,awrittennotificationwillbeprovidedtoparents.Theschoolboardistheonlygroupwiththeauthoritytoendachild’senrollmentatConcordiathroughexpulsion.
DRUGTESTINGConcordiaSchooldoesnotrequiredrugtestingofstudentsduringtheenrollment processandtheydonottestrandomlyafterenrollmentiscomplete. However,ConcordiaSchoolretainstheresponsibilitytoassure

thatstudentsaredrugfree. Tothatend,if substantiatedevidenceisprovidedtotheprincipal,astudentmayberequiredtoundergosufficient drugtestingbyaqualifiedmedicalofficer. Homeworkisassignedwhenworkrequired forconceptmasterycannotbecompletedintheavailabletime.Regularattendanceandconscientioushomeworkcompletionaretwo essentialingredientsforsuccess.Studentsshouldexpecttohave homeworkonmostschooldays. Theamountofhomeworkwilldependuponthecoursesthestudentistaking,thespecificunitsbeingcovered, anindividualstudent’sabilityandworkhabits. Acustodialparentwillonlybedeniedaccessto theirchildwhencourtdocumentation is sharedwith theschool. Thisdocumentationmustbespecificenoughthattheschoolcan clearlydeterminewhichprivilegeshavebeenrevokedandshouldincludebeginningandendingdates.AmemberoftheConcordialeadershipteamwillcommunicatewithdistrict-providedorindependentcounselifquestionsremainunansweredafterviewingofficialdocumentation.Insuchcasesacopyofthecourtorderwillbekeptonfileintheschooloffice. Thefacultywillbe informed,inconfidence,ofthecourtorder,andinknowingwillsharetheresponsibilitytoseethatevery effortismadeonbehalfoftheschooltoupholdtheofficialruling.
RETENTIONANDPROMOTIONConcordiaSchoolbelievesineducatingthewholechild. Thus,retentionandpromotionarebasedonthechild’sage,abilitytoworkatagivengradelevel,attendanceand behavior. Achildwillbeplacedeachyearatthatgradelevelwhichismostappropriatetothatlevelofhisorheracademic skillandabilitytosucceedsocially. Allreasonableinterventions shallbeconsideredbeforeadecisionismadetoretaina student.ThispolicyisineffectforallConcordiaAcademystudents.Ifachildisretained,aspecificplanwillbecreatedandimplementedforthatindividual childtoensurethechildhasasuccessfulexperience.IfastudentreceivestwoquarterF’sinanysubjectarea,he/shewillberequiredtoshowproofofsome typeofremedialworkinthesubjectareabeforebeingpromotedtothenextgradelevel. Remedialwork couldincludetutoring,summerschool,learningcenters,etc. Remedialworkmustbeapprovedbythe buildingprincipal. Itistheresponsibilityoftheparenttoinitiateaplan.Promotionofstudentstothenextgradelevelrequires:
• 90%dailyattendanceand90%ofdailyassignmentscompletedtothestudent’sabilitylevel.• 95%ofprojectsandtestscompletedtothestudent’sabilitylevel.• Promotionrequiresatleasta“D”averageforallcoursesingrades4and5.
