    Inspiringresponsibility?

THE JURY IS IN. SHELLEYWRIGHT .WORDPRESS .COMPosted on Dec 01, 2010 (Check out the wholearticle).I am absolutely sold on the powerof student-centered learning &moving myself off center stage. Ihave received comments from otherteachers who have heard from mystudents how much theyvelearned, & how excited they are tobe doing it this way.

This is not something I expectedwhen we first started this. I had noidea what the outcomes of thiswould be, or that it would be sorewarding. For the first time, oneof my students has a class she

feels she can do. & I feelincredibly honoured that its mine. This makes all the uncertainty &missteps worth it.

Think I should make a list ofhow I can allow students to beeven more responsible for theirlearning...

    Are You Too Old School?

    There is so much diversity

    across the education system

    that you can always find

    examples of bad practice

    that is hurting young

    peoples chance of getting

    any education which will

    prepare them for success in

    the modern world. To

    prepare students for their

futures, teachers need toSTOP the destruction caused

    by:

    Leading Lessons trying to

    guide students to think in

    certain ways, memorise

    particular useless facts, &

    emulate methods which have

gone by the way side along

    time ago destroys their

    innovative minds.---------------------------

Exams no where in life is

    reward given for being able

    to remember things you have

    memorised - apart from game

    shows & the current

    requirements for teachers.

    ---------------------------

    Measuring Everything - as

    schools focus on doing the

    wrong things with

    increasing efficiency they

    propagate the problems of

    eating up teachers time &

    focus with demands to

    assess & measure redundant

    information & skills.

    ---------------------------

    Rote Learning by schools

    only challenging the

    capacity of students to

    memorise out of date

    information & processes we

    condemn them to first

    unlearning before learning

    the skills to be successful

    in the current times.

    Stun your Students!!!

    1. How might YOU use this in YOUR FUTURE?Let students build the connection between what they arelearning and how the skill or info might be useful to them now

and in the future. This is the basis of self sustaining motivation.

    2. How might others use this in their life?Allow students to discover and ponder what makes the world goaround. By challenging and supporting them to think outside

their normal boxes they will gain more options in life, anappreciation of what others do, and see the application of whatthey are being asked to learn.

    3. How could you make money using these skills? No person, business, or group is an island. By allowingstudents to start seeing the connections around them they will

build the important ability to see complex interactions that drivesuccess in the real world.
