ARMSTRONG TECHNICAL MANAGER TONY GILES WRITES:
ALLIANCE IS WELL KNOWN for its
industry leading large washers and
tumblers which we sell under the
Huebsch, Primus and Speed Queen
labels. We were delighted to see a
whole host of new “small chassis”
machine developments this year
which are a neat complement to
Alliance’s larger products, and
which will undoubtedly reinforce
the status of these 8 and 10kg
machines as the world’s best selling
small commercial laundry products.

The Centre is renowned for its high standards
in everything from instruction and schooling
to general horse welfare. They believe the
appearance of the horses is very important,
and everything has to be kept clean. Six
years ago the Centre installed a Primus
18kg washer extractor from Armstrong
Commercial Laundry Systems to wash all
the blankets, rugs, numnahs, bandages and
socks, and this machine is still going strong.
Until recently they have managed the drying
using a hot rail and fresh air, but have now
installed a Huebsch tumble dryer, also from
Armstrong.
Tim Lord explained that, while many stables
send blankets and so on out for cleaning,
they feel that having the laundry facility
on site is both more economical and more
convenient. “We like to be able to wash
our things as often as they need it for both
appearance and hygiene, and to be able
to turn them round quickly and not wait
for items to be sent back from an outside
supplier. The new dryer is a big asset
particularly in the winter and wet weather
when it is impossible to dry things outside,”
he told us. He went on to comment that he
is very pleased with both the equipment and
the service he has received from Armstrong.
THE BERKSHIRE RIDING CENTRE IS A BHS APPROVED RIDING SCHOOL
AND LIVERY YARD near Windsor run by Rosie Lord, well known trainer
and instructor of national and international equestrian teams, and
her husband Tim. The site has 40 horses in residence at any one time,
managed by a team of 12 staff.
High standards
The unit comprises six Primus washers – three 7kg and three 16kg models, six Speed Queen tumble dryers and two Primus ironers. It is open to the public from 08.00-20.00 on weekdays and 10.00-16.00 at weekends, with service washes, which include an ironing service, offered from 12.00-16.00 daily. It is attended at all times, and members of the public purchase vouchers from the site’s main reception which are exchanged for tokens from the attendant.
Ironmonger Row Baths, now operated for Islington Borough by charitable social enterprise GLL, comprises a comprehensive range of leisure facilities
including a gym, two swimming pools and a group exercise studio. It is also home to Spa London, an affordable spa and thermal facility that includes traditional treatments such as a hammam, steam rooms and sauna sited with the building’s original art deco Turkish Baths.
Sarah Matson, operations manager at Ironmonger Row Baths, told us, “The launderette is in constant use with the laundry we generate and the members of the public who use it. We have been very pleased with the equipment and the service we have had from Armstrong and overall the unit is a very valuable part of our popular and busy site”.
AS PART OF A MAJOR REFURBISHMENT BY ISLINGTON BOROUGH COUNCIL OF THE IRONMONGER ROW BATHS ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1931, a launderette has been installed, equipped by Armstrong.

Owned and run by Patrick and Rose Vyvyan-
Robinson, Alltybrain also has stables and
paddocks to accommodate visiting horses,
so is the ideal stopping off place for anyone
trekking or touring in the National Park.
Until recently Rose handled all the laundry
for the complex with a domestic tumble
dryer, but has now installed a 9kg (200 litre
drum) Huebsch LEZ commercial tumble
dryer from Armstrong Commercial Laundry
Systems. Rose said “I’m thrilled with the new
dryer. It makes such a difference to the job of
handling all the laundry.”
The Huebsch LEZ is the world’s best selling
9kg dryer, able to handle large loads in a very
small floor space.
Making a huge differenceTHE BEAUTIFULLY SITUATED ALLTYBRAIN COMPLEX LOCATED NEAR
THE BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARK consists of three self-catering
farm cottages and a farmhouse B&B – at full capacity the complex can
accommodate 18 guests.
British Laundry Machinery CO
Tony has been buying Speed Queen dryers from Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems for many years. “I have an excellent relationship with Armstrong – they’re friendly and helpful and definitely have the best dryers on the market”, he told us. Most recently he bought six new Speed Queen 17kg capacity dryers and two 2x15kg stacked dryers.
The launderettes are all open from 8.00am-8.00pm every day largely for self service, but staff at some units do
take in service washes when they are on site. He told us that most of his business comes from local residents, often using the launderettes for non-weekly washes of items that are too large for domestic machines such as duvets, bedspreads, curtains, etc. “This has been one of the reasons for increasing the number of dryers in the units in recent years,” he told us, “and also for installing some of the stacked dryers which are popular with our customers and make better use of space.
TONY DUCKWORTH, PRESIDENT OF NALI (THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE LAUNDERETTE INDUSTRY), owns and manages a total of 11 launderettes in Lancashire under the brand name Washbowl.
The campus can accommodate up to 140
students at a time in self-contained multi-room
flats – most of the students are in London
for three and a half months. Among the
communal facilities provided for the students is
a laundry, equipped by Armstrong.
Janice Moody from the facilities office at the
London campus told us that the laundry is an
essential element in the facilities offered to the
students, and that they are very happy with
both the quality of the equipment and the
service offered by Armstrong.
THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, BASED IN TALLAHASSEE, has a London
Study Centre where selected students get the opportunity to spend part
of their course in order to broaden their experience and enjoy all the
attractions that London has to offer.
Excellent facilities
Reliability and service
With 42 in-patient beds the hospice
generates a considerable amount of laundry,
and for many years now the hospice has
had a relationship with Armstrong to supply
and maintain their washers and dryers. The
large laundry room includes two recently
purchased Amazon steam heated 18kg
washer extractors from Primus, a larger Primus
high-spin speed 40kg washer, two small
washers that are used for patients’ personal
laundry and three Huebsch tumble dryers
which are still going strong at 12 years old.
Paul Freeman, facilities supervisor at the
hospice, told us that the relationship with
Armstrong was excellent. “The equipment
is robust and reliable – even after many
years of service”, he told us. “If we do have a
problem with a machine the engineers come
out within 24 hours to get it up and running
again, and there’s always good advice when
we need to expand or replace a machine”.
The machines are operated by dedicated
laundry staff and are all in operation seven
days a week. “We aim to get all the washing
done in the mornings when the beds are
changed”, Paul said, “leaving the afternoons
for ironing and finishing and doing personal
items for the patients.”
In common with every other aspect of
the hospice, the laundry comes across as
impressive and well organised, with space
for further expansion when required. Of
the 42 beds, eight are respite beds to give
two week breaks to carers. Apart from
the in-patient facilities, the hospice runs
numerous groups and social events for the
some 1200 outpatients that it deals with
every year, has a thriving café on the ground
floor and a delightful garden where patients
can be wheeled out in their beds in good
weather. Of the £14 million a year it costs to
run the hospice, only 50% comes from the
Government with all the rest having to be
raised from charitable donations.

across Scotland, from the borders to the most
northern highlands and islands.
Office Manager Garth Harris says: “We really do go the extra mile in
Scotland but we are lucky in as much as many of our customers in
very remote locations are extremely self reliant – so if we can’t get
to you the same day our engineers can often troubleshoot and
resolve problems remotely. We are also well stocked with
machines and parts for quick delivery”.

Probably the most significant change to the
Huebsch topload washer and matching gas
and electric dryers are the new electronic
controls. They are incredibly easy to use and
amongst other things feature preset cycle
buttons, cycle adjustability (load size,
temperature, soil level etc), moisture level
indicator lights, and cycle status indicator
lights as well as a time remaining display.
With Speed Queen’s frontload “Horizon”
washers and dryers, the vertical controls are
now replaced by an angled control panel for
improved ease of operation. The washer
drum increases in size to 96.8 litres (10kg
capacity) and with a 1200 spin producing no
less than a 440G Factor, drying times and
energy inputs – which are the most energy
intensive part of any laundry process – are
cut to a minimum.
Horizon washers are Category 5 WRAS
certified for direct connection to mains water
supplies and available as single machines, or

As welcome as these upgrades are, what is equally
pleasing is that Alliance haven’t compromised in any
way on the well known durable build quality of these
machines – and that’s what makes them really stand
out head and shoulders above their competition.
