A Level Art & Design- component 1 – Personal Investigation

TASK FOR THIS WEEKHello 6.1’s, we hope that you and your families are still safe and well.

This week we would like you to begin your ‘additional drawings’ which will eventually be mounted on your ‘drawing board’ with your larger study

You will have 4 weeks to produce a minimum of 2 outstanding additional drawings. These drawings have already been planned out with you in tutorials – but do email us if you’re

confused as to what to do next!

TASKS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS

Work that should now have been completed and emailed to your teacher (even if you’re not fully finished –please email us to let us know how you’re doing)

3. Full draft of written essay

LEARNING PURPOSE

LO1: I will select relevant imagery, surfaces and media to

produce my additional drawings from

LO2: I will produce at least 2 additional drawings which

demonstrate excellent observational and tonal skills

Specialist Vocabulary: Observation, shape, form, proportion, scale, outline, tonal, linear, highlight, contrast, deepen, blend, graduated

YEAR 12 – ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS Task: To produce a minimum of 2 additional drawings

over the next 4 weeks for your project that will enhance

your AO3 score and can be mounted with your other

drawing/s at a later date

Your additional drawings have already been planned roughly with

you during previous tutorials (see target lists) – so you should know

what to do – but if not then please email your Art teacher for

further guidance

You will need to consider the following before starting work on your

additional drawings: Images to work from - these may be your own or others’

photographs and need to link to your theme and project aims

Surfaces to work on (white or brown paper / watercolour etc)

Media in which you wish to work (select the media you are most skilled in)

Look through the following slides for some more guidance, examples and inspiration

YEAR 12 – ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS Ideally we would like you to have for next year the

following:

1 x board with pencil drawing / other media

1 x board of charcoal drawing/other media

OBSERVATIONAL DRAWINGS

These are two boards I have ‘mocked up’ on the theme of ‘underwater’ – one in

pencil and other media, the other shows a range of charcoal studies

You should have completed by now your A2 Pencil drawing and your A2

charcoal study – so now we’d like you to start completing some smaller studies

to go on either of these boards

Mostly you should be working from your own photographs –

but you may work some of your smaller additional drawings

from photos that you’ve found online. Please don’t work from

other people’s drawings though!

Consider the following when selecting which imagery to use:

Using enlarged, focussed sections rather than the whole

photo (close-ups)

Using a range of your photos – so as not to be too

repetitive

Make sure the images you are working from are good

quality and sharp so you can attain detail

Consider editing your image to B&W so that you can

analyse tonal values more accurately

YEAR 12 – ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS Images to work from…

It’s up to you what kind of surface you wish to work on and

may also depend upon which media you choose to work in

Options may include: White cartridge paper

Brown or colour paper

Collaged papers

Newspaper or wallpaper

Lined paper

Paper pre-prepared with watercolour

When making these decisions please consider the following:

What your drawings will look like as a group

Providing some variety in your drawing work

Any possible links to artists you have studied and to your theme

YEAR 12 – ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS Surfaces to work on…

Use whichever media you feel most confident with – but if all

of your studies are going to be in the same media then

consider working on some different surfaces

Media to consider: Pencil / Graphite

Charcoal

Biro / Pen

Colour fineliner

Colouring pencil

Watercolour

When making these decisions please consider the following: What your drawings will look like as a group

Providing some variety in your drawing work

Any possible links to artists you have studied and to your theme
