A Challenge, a Concept, a Project ...Within the past decades, rapid developments in the field of communication technology as well as the ongoing trend of globalisation were causing the change from an industrial to a knowledge society. While worldwide networking today allows quick and easy access to knowledge for everyone, companies lose their formerly competitive advantages. As a result, innovation pressure is growing and companies are forced to refine their existing products, services, and processes.

Especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggle with ever shorter product lives and increasing innovation costs. A solution to these challenges for companies can be to open their innovation process for external input of knowledge and know-how instead of exclusively relying on internal research. The concept behind this idea is called “Open Innovation”, and this is where the OpenAlps project comes into play:

OpenAlps’ overall aim is to support SMEs with enhancing their innovative ability to successfully implement Open Innovation methods. To this end a comprehensive range of services will be created. With this brochure, we would like to introduce one of them: The Open Innovation Labs.

Working groups of SMEs and Research & Development (R&D) centres, so called “Open Innovation Labs”, were set up in six different regions of the project cooperation area. Each lab has its own focus, target group(s), and objective(s), which you can learn more about on the following pages. We’ve included the regional contact data for you to obtain more information.

Enjoy reading and thank you for your interest in our project activities!

Best regards,

Melanie John Elfi Bihler

Open Innovation Labs

The Idea:

The Benefits:

3

Open Innovation Labs in your Region

OpenAlps’ Open Innovation Labs are working groups of SMEs and R&D centres, completed by participants from political authorities and innovation organisations (e. g. cluster organisations).

Within the labs target groups are thoroughly introduced to the concept of Open Innovation and its various methods. Each lab shares a different innovation topic and tries to find elaborate solutions to participants’ innovation problems using Open Innovation. Ultimately, concrete process and/ or product innovations shall be developed.

The Open Innovation Labs are based regionally but are encouraged to achieve transnational impacts. Interested stakeholders thus can participate in any of the six regional labs, according to their specific interests, needs and preferences. The map and table on the following page provide you with a comprehensive overview.

» Supported by innovation experts SMEs can gain hands-on experience with Open Innovation methods and find creative solutions to their current innovation challenges.

» R&D centres have the chance to gain experience with Open Innovation methods on a research level.

» Policy makers can learn about the current state-of-the-art of the innovation processes of their regional SMEs and R&D centres.

» Innovation organisations benefit from networking opportunities and can win new competences in Open Innovation.

Open Innovation Lab Slovenia: ORbITaLA - Creative Industries

What is it about? The Slovenian Open Innovation Lab ORbITaLA is connecting end users with developers of ideas and implementors of solutions. It provides an environment where clear needs and ways to fulfil them are identified, and new technological and process solutions are brought from the abstract model to the implementation level.

Main ObjectivesThe lab will identify the need for specific improvements of everyday household items, for instance to improve the user friendliness for specific target groups such as children, the elderly, or disabled people. Refinements of design and functionality, as well as giving everyday value to innovation and/ or invention will ensure that creative approaches to Open Innovation will be made for the use of the general and specific public and/ or private target groups.

What is happening?Regional SMEs, R&D centres, policy makers, and other stakeholders from the field of Open Innovation were identified as founding members of ORbITaLA and the lab’s launch conference was held in May 2012. The lab is making its presence known in cooperation with the University of Maribor, and to the wider public within Slovenia (outside Podravje region) in cooperation with public stakeholders such as the Technological Agency.

Target GroupsStakeholders in the field of creative industries, research and development centres and the wider public with the need to overcome specific problems.

Kaj je ORbITaLA?Laboratorij odprtega inoviranja ORbITaLA povezuje končne uporabnike s snovalci zamisli in razvijalci produktov.

The OpenAlps ProjectToday, in order to produce a successful product or service, the access to relevant information on needs and solutions is more important than ever. For this reason the OpenAlps project was set up to support SMEs in their innovation processes with external partners, in a push to open their doors for external knowledge and know-how.

OpenAlps is part of the EU’s Alpine Space Programme and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the participating states. The project has a budget of 2.6 million € and a duration of 3 years (July 2011 – June 2014).
