More Strings in Stereo!When record buyers started to embrace thenew wonder of stereophonic sound towardsthe end of the 1950s they realised that theadded dimension allowed them to hear andappreciate far more of the music than hadpreviously been possible. Conductors andarrangers adapted their styles to take fulladvantage of this leap in the technology ofsound reproduction, as already demonstratedin the recent Guild CD “Strings And ThingsGo Stereo!” GLCD 5153. In this collectionthere are further examples of superbperformances from the orchestras of GeorgeMelachrino, Nelson Riddle, Angela Morley,Robert Farnon, Percy Faith, Morton Gould,Les Baxter, David Carroll - and even theLondon Symphony Orchestra playing one ofEric Coates’ most popular melodies.

Light and LivelyAlthough the title of this collection rightlysuggests that there is a wealth of ‘Light andLively’ music on offer, there are some moregentle - even restful - numbers to provide awelcome contrast. The opening track, RobertFarnon’s famous Derby Day, finds the masterof light music in top form, although thecompetition is tough from the likes of PercyFaith, Helmut Zacharias, Florian ZaBach,Richard Hayman, Frank Chacksfield, RayMartin, Acquaviva, Frank Cordell, MishelPiastro, David Rose and Sidney Torch.Among some special gems are the GérardCalvi instrumental which became aworldwide hit as One of those Songs whenlyrics were added; also a marvellous‘Hollywood-sounding’ tour-de-force fromJoe Leahy with his Theme from Studio X.
