THE STEPS OF FAITH FALL ON THE SEEMING VOID, AND FIND THE ROCK BENEATH.-WHITTIER.

2 NOW. e

Primary Lesson No. 4.EXPLANATION OF MENTAL HEALING.

Facts are rapidly accumulatingthat testify to the power of the mentalpractitioner. The questions are: Whatis the power? And how is it done?Since thought is now known to be a

mode of motion swifter and more po-tent than either light or electricity, itcan readily be admitted that thoughtdoes it. This is readily understoodwhen the power of one's own thoughtupon his body is recognized.

`

Thought Transference supplies theneeded link in the solution of the prob-lem. All claims to the myterious or thesupernatural, and all claims to a mon-

opoly or a patent-right, fall away be-fore the present understanding.

All the various schools, whethercalled " Christian Science," "Homeof Truth," Divine Science," "MentalScience," "Metaphysicians," "Ontolo-gists," etc., effect their cures by thesame power and telepathy, or what isalso known as "Mind Reading," is a

potent and ever present factor. The"Mind Reader" goes to the thing he ismentally told by the operator, just as

the needle is drawn to the magnet byits slower vibrations. He acts as theoperator suggests because he has be-come willing to do so. Il] therefore, the operator thought "pain," the sub-ject would feel pain. If he had a painand the operator thought "relief," thepain would go. This is what the men-

tal healer of whatever kind does.Though he may rise to that realm ofbeing where thought is not yetformulated-the realm of spirit.

This is the principle known in phy-sics as "Sympathetic Vibration." Ex-periments illustrating this may easilybe tried. Press down the C key of thepiano and then strike the C in anyother octave, and the striug of the firstC will give tone, as may be discoveredby letting up the key. Thus,a violinwill, if lying in the room, vibrate withthe piano. Since all nature is one andall force is one, this principle ofsympa-thetic vibration will explain the phe-nomena of mental healing, telepathy, inspiration and all occult phenomena.Thoughts are received by all minds inthe same key, or what is the same thing, are in sympathy with them.

A thought thus received has the same

power in the mind receiving as itwould have had come into it by thegrdinary channels, And as thoughts

control life, and can make one sick, theycan also make one well.

Mental healing requires on the partof the practitioner, a warm and gener-ous nature and a concentrative mentalpower. His thought should in its in-fluence be like the powder in the can-

non behind the projectile, and not likethat flashed in the pan.

Only through the mind can the bodybe reached, and thus those who are not

susceptible to this mode of treatmentmust have something in shape of medi-cine or some hygenic measure to makethem receptive to the thought of cure.

Whether medicine does or does notdo good is not wise to affirm, but thisis true:-If there is no faith on part ofpatient and his friends in the doctor, and in medicine, there will be no cure, whatever other factors be absent theseof suggestion and faith must be presentfor success.

As a people, we are becoming more

sensitive every generation, consequent-ly are susceptible now to the finerforces as our fathers were not.

The faith-curist, the mental scientistand the magnetic healer would nothave found a field one hundred yearsago. Now the field is ready and theycome in response to that sensitivenesswhich has outgrown not only calomel, but the high potencies of the homeo-pathists. _

The evolution of the healing art liesalong this field. Sometime we mayexpect a system of mental cure inwhich this principle is as perfectly de-veloped as are physical sciences now.

To-day, under the operation of force, but partially understood, they heal, butare themselves like the man healed byJesus who "saw men as trees walk-ing," but partiallyfreed by the Truthtoo great for one generation to fullyperceive.Psychometry

Demonstrates in a man, and ex-

plains the mechanism of those trans-cendent powers which have hitherto de-fied the comprehension ofphilosophy, and which have been regarded with de-fiant hostility by materialistic cultiva-tors of mere physical science, whilethey have been welcomed by poetry, religion, and the deepest emotionswhich ally man to heaven.

In studying Psychometry mysterydisappears, and the most cautious en-

quirer in vital science will feel that heis treading on safe and solid ground.-

Dr. ]. R. Buchanan.

EIl'ect of Hind on Body.Frank F. Moore in his "A Journal-

ist's Note Book" tells this story: Ayoung man in the civil service in Indiaconsulted an M. D. in regard to hishealth. After an examination the doc-tor said, "I will write you to-morrow."

The next day the letter came and init he was advised to lose no time inclosing up his affairs. "You may livemany weeks but you had best not leaveimportant matters undecided."

The young man was dismayed andtook to his bed with difficult respira-tion and with severe pain in his heart.During the night he became so muchworse ~ that he sent for the doctor."What on earth have you been doing,"asked he; "there were none of thesesymptons yesterday." "It is my heart,"said the sick man. "But your heartwas all right." "And my lungs," con-

tinued the man. "What is the matterwith you? Have you been drinking P""O, Doctor, your letterl You said Icould live but a few weeks." "Are youcrazy? I wrote you to take a vacationfor a few weeks and then you wouldbe all right." The patient then drewthe letter from under his pillow."Heavens !" cried the doctor on look-ing at it, "This was meant for anotherman." The young man at once sat upand made a rapid recovery.

What was the result upon the otherman is not told, but by the same lawhe should have become well. "Evil tohim who evil thinks." Sickness to himwho thinks sickness.

"I Cannot Alford lt."So reply many when asked to sub-

scribe to NOW. Why think so P Andif you think it well for you to have it,you can not afford to forego it more

than you can afford to go withoutbread. The mind needs food and tostarve it is to invite poverty. Whenyou cannot afford anything you feel itright to have, buy it if it takes your lastnickel. That is the way to conquerpoverty. A lady teacher of mentalscience tells me she did not conquer tillshe spent one Saturday evening herlast nickel for car fare when she hadnot a cent for food on the morrow. "Iwas tired and wished I could afford toride. I thought I could not afford it,Then came the thought, 'God is my sup-ply and I will trust Him.' I did, andon the early morn came a lady for treat-ment and paid me $10 in advance.Since that time I have not counted mymoney. To feel that it is right to

spend is enough.Ingersoll said: "If you have but a

dollar to spend, spend it royally."

NOW..A gentleman told me recently that

he had been wishing for a desk, but couldnot, he thought, afford it. Was tryingto get enough ahead to pay a debt. One day looking in a window he saw

a desk he wished. Feeling that he /:ada nigh! to ii, he went in and bought it." Since then I have felt free; moneygoes easy but it comes also much easier.I seemed to have let some obstructionfall from my mind." He had droppedLimitations. This will ever free theindividual from poverty as from pain.

A friend recently had but 25 centsin his .pocket, with the uncertainty ofearning more. He was lonesome, andsaid to himself: "I wish I could affordto go to the theatre." As this thoughtflitted through his brain came this: "Iam the~equal of any one. If anothercan afford it, so can I. I will go andtrust the future." He started, and on

his way met a friend who put him on

to the way of earning a $I before hewent to the theatre. Since that he hasseen the law of Opulence to lie inTrust in the Omnipresent Life withinand without him.

We can afford To do Rzlglzt. That isall we can afford. So let there be no

economy where you feel it right for youto have from" the ALL that which youwish. To refuse, is to put a limitationthat will keep you poor. Well, saysHelen Wilmans: "Economy is the roadto the poorhouse." And economy inpapers and books is the road to mentalpoverty. Take NOW and all the papersyou can study. Let the records ofcrimes and political harangues andgossips in the dailies alone. SeekTruth.

This is the affirmation. I can affordall that is good for me.

The Editor

Is obliged to those who have sent

manuscripts to NOW, but he is com-

pelled to decline all such contributions, forthe space and the scope of thepaper is limited. All contributions, not his own, are solicited from thosewhom he feels has something that iswithin the mission of NOW. It mustbe affirmations. There will be nothingof a negative character in the columnsof NOW and only those who can

AFFIRM truth will find room for a

line in its pages.

Mind in Disease.

[From an article by Q. A. R. HOLTON, M. D.,in the Cali/arma Mzdtrnl four/ml, for _laun-ary, 1900, on the treatment of disease.]

The medical profession has longmade the mistake of trying to trace alldiseases from the material to the psy-chical, and in the treatment they havestill more closely adhered to the mater-ial and neglected the immaterial forces. Not only does a weakened and irregu-lar acting heart produce a sense of fearand alarm, but fear produced from out-side influences, will much more readilyproduce a weak and irregular action ofthe heart. Sudden fright or fear willalso produce an excessive flow of urineand a watery painless diarrhoea, thus

showing its depressing effects on thevital functions of the body; carried toextremes it has often produced death.

Long continued indigestion willbring on irritability, melancholy, de-

pression and anxiety, but these condi-tions ofthe mind, when produced fromcauses without the body, will veryquickly destroy the appetite and the

power of digestion. The recipient ofbad news loses appetiteand the processof digestion is stopped.

The presence of a crowd of strang-ers suspends the action of the bowels. Thus people who leave home with itsquiet routine to travel in public, or to

mingle in crowds, find themselves suff-ering from constipation, which theysuppose to be caused by a change ofdiet, but which is in reality caused bychanged influence on the mind, andthrough the mind on the nerves.

Anger is a disease producer; excita-tion is followed by depression and weak-ness, very much like alcoholism. Ionce had a patient who had a sick spellafter every quarrel with her husband.

Hope, confidence, cheerfulness, faithand a clear conscience, are sustainers,if not creators, of vital force and

power. They not only help to main-tain a state of health, but are powerfulforces in throwing off diseased condi-tions.

The medical profession while ac-

knowledging the influence of the mindon health and disease, has been woefullydeficient in utilizing this powerful fac-tor and turning its potent influence to

their aid against disease. Develop-ment along this line is needed.

It is difiicult for one who has beenused to reasoning and living intellect-ually, to understand the Mental Scien-tist who, holding the same philosophyand differing not with him in opinion, nevertheless does not stop with merelyseeing Truth by way of logic, butLives it by afiirmation till he comes tolive it by Realization. The centurieshave known all the principles we af-firm. We do not attempt to reason

nor by logic to prove the existence ofGod or the "I AM," but to afiirm thistill we sense that we arc and that God ir.

From sources that at first one wouldthink would be ready to welcome us,comes our worst misunderstanding. One who has lived by reason will beapt to die by reason before he learnsto use and realize the Truth he hasreasoned out. Applied Truth is artand mechanics. Applied Truth to

daily living is Mental Science. Thedifference between the New Though!and Free Thought is that betweenScience and Art. Mental Science ismore properly termed The Art ofLiving. i

This difference is shown in a sermon

preached before the Pacific Unitarian

Conference recently by Rev.. W. D.Simonds of Seattle. He pays atten-tion to NOW.in these words. "Notlong since I received a sample copy ofthe 'organ' of a new religion. It hailsfrom San Francisco, which this religiondeclares is the 'Psychic Centre' of theWorld'. Before me lays the new- creed-destined to supersede all others-astatement of truth forvwhich the ageshave waited. I read its principal af-firmations just as they are now for thefirst time 'given to an eager worldz"And here' he quotes thirty-one of thethirty-nine affirmations. in the MarchNOW. By his comments is shownthat the gentleman has not yet com-

prehended in the slightest degree thefirst principles of Mental Science. Hehas not learned to live deeper than theintellectual perception of Truth. Heis where the ancients were who knew.that there was electricity but had no

use for it. The axioms of mathemat-ics are not reasoned upon, but statedand form the basis of all future mathe-matical operations. So affirmations ofwell-accepted Truth are stated for thepurpose ol* making them the basis of

practical work in the art of living. Itdoes not harm TRUTH for this Unitafrian brother to thus misunderstand thepurpose of NOW in Love. NOW takeshis words asuan incentive for harderefTort to make plain its purpose and thework _.of all metaphysical teaching, whether it be "Christian Science" or

the rational method of "Soul Culture."Iwill note his comment upon one af-firmation, merely pausing here to saythat upon the close of his remarksupon NOW he says "This creed seemsto be a question of capitals,of inanityina large type." The brother in his ser#

mon has capitals for "God," "M.E.Church," "L.L.D.," "D.l).," "Bible,""Christian," etc. NOW_ has capitalsfor its _God, also, and puts them inCapital that the _old conception of God*may pass away. And, by the way, its

conception is the Unitarian conceptionand this gentleman's creed is that ofNOW. It is "Love to God and Loveto Man." All the difference lies in theone smelling only of the study# and

pulpit, and the other is of the work-shop and the field of daily life. 'Wepractice what the liberalism of all timehas taught. -

_ _

The basic afiirmations of all philos--ophy must that of the Me and theNot-me. The common word for theNot-me is God. Therefore, the basic af-

fimations of NOW are-I AM: GODIS. Of this latter aflirmation the Rev.says, "How wonderfull"

`

Yes, wonderful. It bears the same

relation to Mental Science that theaxiom "The whole is equal to all itsparts," does to mathematics. Howwonderful! could one exclaim. Whytell anything everybody knows? Buttill everybody works upon that axiomno possible solution of any problemof quantity. So not till one worksfrom this axiom, God is, will there beany solution to any problem oflife, andno practical growth in the applicationof Truth to life manifestation. But toafiirm this, and to dwell in thoughtupon all that God means, is to carve

life, with the only tools Man uses, intoconsciousmanifestation, Till one doesthis there is only the manifestation in-cident to the sub-conscious in him. When he does this, he becomes theconscious director of his life. Thoughtis creative, and to use afiirmations as

nearer to what will be the philosophyof the future than any I have ever

present metaphysical aud psychicmovements. Truth is ONE. The Men-tal Scientists, the Metaphysicians, the

Theosophists and the Spiritualists, willultimately meet on the common ground-I am Spirit/ All is Spiril. Thenwill there be a united movement thatmeans the redemption of Man fromsickness, poverty, sorrow and death. The twentieth century is to see the ap-plication of Truth, made clear in all the

A very pleasant evening was SPQIWby members of the First SpiritualUnion at their rooms in Sleeper Hall, last evening. The reception, whichwas tendered to the society's newly-chosen teacher,Henry Harrison Brown, consisted of a short musical and liter-ary program followed by a social hour, during which refreshments were served.-Herald, San Jose, July 28, I900.

At Noon

Each day let each reader ofNOW _send forth the aliirmation ofPEACE. Peace first, for self; Peacefor the nation; Peace for all humanity. As the clock, or bell, or whistle, or sun, announces the meridian hour, let thethought of Peace in some form goforth. This will soon become a habit, and as noon approaches the sense ofPeace will steal over you. That sense

will each day extend its reign until ul-timately each moment will be one ofinward Peace. These vibrations How-ing from so many souls will do muchto mold the world-thought into that of"Peace on earth: Good will to men."

The "Suggester and Thinker"

For july has these kind words forNOW: "Henry Harrison Brown, a

well and favorably known contributorto the Suggesier and Thinker has justbegun the publication of a very excel-lent 'New Thought'periodical, with the

appropriate title of NOW. Every one

Power of Thinking.Through thinking, states of con-

sciousness are set up. If this thinkingconforms to Truth, harmony results. The law is, that thoughts become exter-

nalized, for thoughts are creative. Wenever think a thought that does notmake an impression on our body, or

upon that of others, or on our or theirenvironment. So far as the physicalmanifestation is concerned, it picturesthe growth of the soul; the body re-

presents the sum total of what we havethought. It is true that other people'sthoughts have had somewhat to do withit, since thought is force; nevertheless, their thoughts cannot effect us unlesswe let them into consciousness and ap-propriate them and make them our own.

We must shut the door to evil thoughts, let them come from where they may. This we can do if we keep in mind theTruth of our Being. Thoughts come

and go, and effect a lodgment wherethere is the least resistance, in obe-dience to the law of attraction. Butwe must not emphasize the power ofother people's thought over us. lt iscarried too far when we try to saddleour sins and shortcomings upon others, because of this power of thought. This is simply the old orthodox devilmade over to suit the occasion. Wehave the work of choosing and over-

coming to do. No thought can enterour consciousness that does not find a

welcome there. Do not welcome evilones.-j. W. Bennett, in Unigy.

Your Real Self

Is that which says "I am." Itcannot be described, because descrip-tion is limitation, and IT is unlimitedin its capacity BE. It is the AllPossibility, yet ignorant of the statesof consciousness into which it is usher-ed (mtil it has experienced them. Inthe flesh consciousness it is Will. Inthe spiritual consciousness it is Love.

There are people 'who have hadenough of fleshly experience and de-sire to be born into Spirit. That de-sire will open the door. You have onlyto desire to be, and you surely will findthe way to be that which you desire. There is no exception to this inherentprinciple of Being. You have polar-ized your desire in the direction of theflesh or you would not be having theexperiences of the flesh.-Lea Virgo,in Unigi.

TODAY OF

NOW.How to Read NOW.

Occult Tru!/as has this direction forits readers which is good enough forNOW. Learn how to get the goodNOW has for you. The New Thoughtdemands study; students, and notreaders. Keep each issue by you untilit has become yours by assimilation.Absorption is the word. I have readEmerson's First Series of Essays since1864 and have only begun to absorbthem. They have never been awayfrom me on any journey nor at anytime. I am beginning to FEEL themin my life. So may NOW be to you. This is what brother Smiley says:

"To merely read this magazine once

will do you no appreciable good. Ifyou read it over and over for at least 7nights, its truths will soak into yourconsciousness, change your thoughts andthen your movements, till prosperityresults. Do not read in a hurry, nor

when liable to be interrupted, nor

thoughtlessly. Do not discuss its state-ments with unsympathetic people.Treat it as achild must treat cube root,as a lesson to be learned when you are

quiet and undisturbed. Otherwise itsgood influence upon you may be lost.Divine knowledge springs up withinconsciousness when one is quiet, undis-turbed, alone, peaceful, and attentiveto the voice within. Outer distractionsdrown its words. Cherishing truthleads us to acts which produce healthand wealth."

It is good to get such words as thesefrom a co-worker of power like Mrs.Jean Porter Rudd: "NOW is splen-did. It will surely win its way. TheAffirmations are glorious. Emersontells us that 'The soul is fed on affirma-tions,' and I know this to be true. When souls are fed and nourishedthere is no doubt that our bodies willbe. Do you ever give away a sub-scription to NOW? I am interestedin a little family. They are respecta-ble working people who were well andliving in content till overwork broughton sickness and this in such cases soon

means want. I have taken them undermy care, to heal and to teach." YesJean, NOW will go and we will healboth body and purse by stimulatingtheI AM to affirmation. Somebodywill pay the 50c.

I. S. P. of Windsor, N. C., writes:-Your ideasgive me more information than I have ever found inothers.

ALI. DAYS IS THE ONE T0 BE ADMIRED.

Hrs. H. E. CadyIn the introduction of her Lessons

gives these directions for all who wishto obtain good from the teachings ofothers. "Let each one as far as pos-sible, Iay aside for the time being allprevious theories and beliefs. If thereis anything you do not understand or

agree with, just let it lie passively inyour mind until you receive the entirecourse; for statements that arouse an-

tagonism and discussion will be clearedand accepted a little further on. Bewilling to be for the time as littlechildren."

I am whole. I am prosperous.I am rich. I am happy.I am generous. I am loving.I am good. I am true.Nothing tempts me, nor binds or

limits me. I am free,I am free. InTruth I am free. So /et it be.

Mind Over Pain.

A gentleman met a boy on a coldwinter morning riding a horse and cry-ing with the cold. He advised the boyto get 05' and walk. The youth replied:" No, Sir! this is a borrowed horse andI'll ride him if I freeze."
