Segal Lecture Brings Renowned Artist to Neve Shalom
NEVE SHALOM Serving the Northern Middlesex County Jewish Community
Congregant Q&A ...................................................... 3 Called to the Torah .................................................... 5 Nursery School News ................................................ 6
W ho is David Moss? Let me tell you. Then you can hear him at this year’s
Israel Segal Lecture on Sunday morning March 23 at 10:00 am. What's more, our kids will have a chance to learn from him and we will have the rare opportunity to attend an artists studio where we can try our hands at creative art under Moss’ tute-lage! David Moss is one of the Jewish world’s most prominent illuminators, animators, transformers of Jewish texts, objects and spaces. Born in Ohio, he resides in Jerusa-lem. Many of us own or have seen at Jewish weddings a Jewish object that Moss pio-neered. The illustrated and artistically de-signed ketubah. In 1969, Moss, beginning his career as an artist and illustrator in the Jewish world, was the first in modern times to transform the ketubah from a black and white printed document into a personalized and artistically enhanced document com-missioned by a bride and groom. Hundreds of artists followed Moss' initiative. Then in 1980 he did the same thing with the Haggadah. He was one of the first moderns to illuminate the Haggadah in original and colorful fashion and guided by the oral traditions of the ancient rabbis. The Moss Haggadah is a modern classic. One reviewer called it the "greatest Haggadah ever." The Reagan White House purchased an original to present as a gift to the visiting president of Israel. Later, David Moss brought the same creativity to Jewish objects and
space...stenders (small podiums from which sacred texts are taught) and pottery. His work has been featured in the New York Public Library, UJA events, and synagogues throughout the world. He has extended himself beyond his own studio...with master classes for other fledgling Jewish artists, and as a scholar in residence at Camp Ramah. Your time with David Moss will provide you with knowledge of the Haggadah and its artistry, which you can then incorporate into your own seder. What a treat for us to spend a day with David Moss. Come with your family and friends to this unique event sponsored by Shirley Segal and her family in tribute to Israel Segal, father and husband and grandfather and pious Jew. Israel inspired us in life and through this annual event in Neve Shalom continues that inspira-tion. One may, but need not come to each event in the whole day schedule. Because David Moss is so dedicated to "spreading the creativi-
ty and artistry” and is eager to impact all ages, the day will be broken into several parts with several groups. As an adult, you will probably want to hear his lecture accom-panied by illustrations, and maybe his artist’s studio. For obvious reasons, the studio re-quires pre-registration) 9:15-10:00: With the religious school 10:15-12:15: Lecture explaining David
Moss' approach to the illustration of the Haggadah
12:15-12:45: Book signing and refresh-ments
1:30: Artists studio...(no charge, but this will require your registration please!). Trying your own hand at the Moss meth-od of illustration, under David’s guidance.
To Shirley Segal and her family, Israel’s children, grandchildren, children-in-law- the gratitude of all of us for this wonderful and unique chance to sit with one of the Jewish world’s most innovative and spiritual artists.

Bar/t Mitzvah Parents On Wednesday, March 5, parents of upcoming b’nai mitzvah in the next few years will have an opportunity to meet with the Rabbi, Ritual Committee leaders, Gift Shop representatives, Rita Devlin from the synagogue office and me to speak about issues and policies regarding your child’s simcha. I have created a new website for bar and bat mitzvah students and families. David Garb and Sabrina Szteinbaum helped shoot and edit the videos. There was no cost to the synagogue. To see the new website with many pages of pictures, policies, forms, prayers, helpful links and much more go to: http://can2r11.wix.com/hazzan11 or at the NeveShalom.net site under “PRAYER,” where you can slide down to bar/t mitzvah. We think this will be very helpful to our families. Feel free to contact [email protected] if you have questions or suggestions about this new site.
Purim There will be some changes to our Purim celebrations at Neve Shalom making them a little different from those of previous years. On Saturday, March 15 at 8:00 pm our “traditional” service with the complete Megillah chanting will take place. Sunday morning at 8:30 am the adult morn-ing service will also include Torah and Megillah readings. At 10:00 am, during Hebrew School, the Purim Family Service will be held with mostly teen readers. We encourage everyone to come in costume and bring your own groggers and other noise makers or we will provide them. The Rabbi will be giving gifts for winners of the Purim trivia questions and the Hazzan will be leading the sing-ing of favorite Purim songs. Immediately after the service, the 4th-6th graders will perform the new musical “Wizards of PersOz” based on tunes from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Wiz” and “Wicked” with new words by the Hazzan. There is no charge and hamantaschen will be served. At 11:30 am the Nursery School will present a Purim Puppet Show for families with young children. At noon, at the JCC on Oak Tree Road, Neve Shalom and the JCC will be having our com-bined Purim carnival. The games are all free. Kosher food will be sold and there is a small admis-sion fee for a cool Reptile Show. To volunteer to run a booth or help with set-up contact [email protected]

W ith this article, I am continuing this inter-
view series to help congregants get to know one another a little better. Feedback has confirmed that these inter-views not only help put names with faces, but people discover things they have in common with others, and help make easier connections. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] if you’d like to be interviewed. How long have you been mem-bers of Neve Shalom?
We joined the shul about 14 years ago.
What made you join Neve Shalom?
They had a great nursery school and Hebrew School. We wanted to connect with a place where our kids could be with other Jewish chil-dren, and the synagogue was Conservative and nearby.
What do you like best about Neve Shalom?
Most of our friends belong to Neve! We’ve made many new friends here since joining.
Where are you each from originally?
We are both from Rockland County, New York, but we did not know each other while growing up.
Tell us about your professions?
Scott is a Project Manager. He goes to various clients and “computerizes” them. Susan sells personalized invitations and station-ery for her company, NotesWorthy. She also teaches the Gan (kindergarten) class on Sundays at the Hebrew School.
What are your hobbies and interests?
Both Scott and Susan are involved in Boy and Girl Scouts as leaders, respectively, and enjoy working with children. Susan works-out reli-giously, and Scott likes chickens!! Jeremy, 20, enjoys doing lighting and works with various technical aspects of theatrical productions and sporting events. He is currently studying Radio, TV and Film at Rowan University. He works for Comcast, aside from being a college student. Evan, 18, enjoys everything about sports, and is pursuing a career in Sports Management at Temple University, where he volunteers for the 76ers basketball team. Allie, 13, spends time competing in Odyssey of the Mind, baton twirling, and hanging out with all her friends on the “Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tour” this year!
What is something that people may not know about you?
Scott enjoys stamp collecting. Susan worked in metals/commodities on Wall Street before having children.

H azzan Nancy Abramson,
the director of the H. L. Miller Cantori-al School of the
Jewish Theological Seminary will be our guest speaker at the 7:30 pm ser-vice on Friday, March 21. Cantor Abramson served the Park Avenue Synagogue for many years prior to taking over the Cantorial School of JTS. She is currently the president of the Cantors Assembly and was recently installed as the first women to hold this post. Cantor Abramson is on the Board of the HaZamir Foundation and for many years sang in the Zamir Chorale. Her love of Ju-daism and knowledge of Jewish music and the current Jewish scene will be obvious in her presentations. During that Friday night service, she will teach us about zemirot (Jewish hymns), After refreshments are served she will discuss changes that are happening in training cantors at the Seminary and the chang-ing roles for cantors in our American synagogues. While some many even question if there will be professional cantors in the future, this will be an informative and interesting opportunity to speak about the present and the future with one of the key players today of the American cantorate. The annual Israel Segal Lecture this year will bring world renowned artist, David Moss, to our congregation. The famous Moss Haggadah has been praised as one of the finest Hagga-dot ever published. Mr. Moss rose to prominence with his well-known ketubah. He has been honored and had exhibits at major galleries and museums throughout the world. He has been an artist in residence at major institutions, schools and camps. Prior to his adult presentation at 10:15 am on March 23 he will work with the Hebrew School children to help them develop their creativity. After the lecture, at the luncheon, he will sign books. Then at 1:15 pm he will invite everyone into his “Artist Studio” to share in the creative process. Mr. Moss lives in Israel and has designed parks and large artistic installations to help bring people together. This “Day with David Moss” is a once in a lifetime opportunity that no one should miss. The annual lecture sponsored by Shirley Segal and her family also includes brunch and has consistently been an important part of our congregation for many years. It is free, open to the public and we invite you to come and bring your friends.

E in Gedi is the place in Israel where the desert meets the oasis. It is located in the Judean Desert, not far from the Dead Sea, Masada and Qumran. Ein Gedi means “Spring of the Goat”.
Goats may be scarce in the area now but there is plenty of other wildlife. Ein Gedi is really a desert oasis complete with waterfalls, pools and large streams and has served as a water source since bibli-cal times. As a popular hiking spot, the lush vegetation from the springs and waterfalls contrast sharply with the brown desert land-scape. Ein Gedi is rich in history and is referred to in the Bible’s Song of Songs as the “vineyards of Ein Gedi”. Three thousand years ago David hid from King Saul here. The remains of an old synagogue with a well preserved mosaic floor dating to the Second Century CE provide evidence of a past Jewish community. In more modern times, Kibbutz Ein Gedi was settled in 1953 and until the 1967 Six Day War, was isolated due to its location along the Green Line sepa-rating Israel from the Jordanian West Bank. The kibbutz’s main crop is dates which have grown in the area for centuries. In addition to its spa, the kibbutz has a renowned botanical garden with over 900 spe-cies of plants from all over the world. Just north of Ein Gedi is Qumran National Park where in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. As early as the 8th century BCE people lived in the caves at Qumran. From 132-135 BCE Bar Kochba’s fighters hid in the caves. The purported owners of the Dead Sea Scrolls known as the Dead Sea Sect lived here around 130 BCE-70CE. Whether you come to Ein Gedi for the spas, hiking or to just to see the contrast between a desert and oasis, come with the knowledge that you are visiting a place that has served as a natural refuge for people for centuries.

Middle School in Metuchen, where his favorite subjects are Social Studies and Language Arts. He is a member of the Track and Cross Country teams at Edgar Middle School and he plays basketball at Kadima. Also, Eitan plays the alto saxophone. In his spare time, he says, “I love going to New York City to look at real estate. I read The New York Times real estate section every Sunday.” In his travels, Eitan has visit-ed London, Israel, France, the Caribbe-an, California, Florida, North and South Carolina, and Washington, DC.
As a special project in honor of his bar mitzvah, Eitan told us, “I have been saving tzedekah money ever since my parents started giving me an allowance many years ago. I am going to donate that money to a fund that helps veterans, in honor of my brother, Jesse, who is serving in the United States Marine Corps.”

I t may be cold outside but there are plenty of activities to keep you warm here at Neve Sha-
lom Nursery School! On February 1, we enjoyed our annual "Shluffy Time" event where everyone came dressed in his or her favorite "jammies" (even some of the parents!) The 3 and 4 year old classes presented a lovely version of the Havdallah service singing and swaying to the Deb-bie Friedman version of the blessings. We would like to thank the Nursery School Committee for sponsoring the evening's entertainment, Matty Roxx a Jewish children’s singer/entertainer, and the yummy snacks! During the month of February, we also en-joyed a visit from the Recycle Robot, a free pro-gram sponsored by the Middlesex County Recy-cling Department. We learned all about the bene-fits of recycling and what items can be re-used to help save the earth. Each child received a free pencil made from recycled blue jeans…..cool! In response to several Nursery School and non-Nursery School families with young infants, we have created a brand new program entitled “Baby & Me”. This is intended to be a free pro-gram where moms and their infants (0 – 12 months) can meet, socialize, and plan activities with each other. Neve Shalom Nursery School offers a free meeting place, but it is entirely up to the group how they wish to spend their time to-gether. We welcome these young families, many of whom are new to the area, and look forward to watching them form a strong bond of friendship and community. The “My Jewish Journey” program which meets once a month on Sunday mornings for pre-school aged children and their families is a re-sounding success! The activities are fun, informa-tive, and interactive with each family bringing home ideas and handmade items to enhance their individual Jewish journey! It’s not too late to join, for more information please contact Martha Mack at [email protected] or download the flyer from our website, www.neveshalom.net. If you know of anyone who is interested in sending their child to Neve Shalom Nursery School, please just let us know and we will be happy to give them a personal tour of the facility. We also offer a "Mommy & Me" program for the 18 – 24 month olds and a “Just Me” program for the 24 month – 2-1/2 year olds. In addition we offer an excellent “Kindergarten Before/After School” enrichment program which is available five days a week for our local half-day Kindergar-teners. If you are interested in more information about these, or any of our programs, please con-tact Martha Mack at 732-548-2238 ext., 17.
