El The sub-tropical climate of São Paulo fosters a house with large openings in the living

spaces. The housing program is simple: on the ground floor are the main rooms, with direct

access to the garden and pool, while the top floor is dedicated to the guest rooms and the

photography laboratory of the client. Two concrete blocks overlap perpendicularly separating

the patio into two different areas.

Confronted with an unquestionably dignified historic legacy, it was decided to preserve it and

make it the feature of the programme and the image. The 17th century convent holds all the

exhibition areas. The project designs the entrance, the route and all the zones preceding the

actual tour. The entrance is dug into the base of one of the existing buildings, on a long,

narrow plan. A narrow passageway penetrates the precinct, distancing us from commonplace

shapes. The corridor culminates in a dome-shaped reception space, the center of this

reception area. This dome is perforated by another running in the opposite direction, providing

views of the convent from a lower level. This large, empty, secret, sheltered space is also

shaped by the presence of the auditorium, the media library and the entrance to the top floor

This entrance, which brings us into contact once again with the reality of the old convent,

leads to the access point used historically to enter this universe of construction and voids.

The main goal is to transform the sequence of arrival, the reception and initiation of the visit

on a topographical, architectural and landscape device: the Atrium. Intervention is

topographical, not a building that fills the landscape. Playing with terraced areas, a

entry-world to an inhabited space is created, with no external consequences. It goes without

imposing a new presence where the weight of history had already written its long existence.

The wide ramp lateralizes the new Atrium and the narrow crack in the ground progressively

reveal a powerful tectonic that builds landscape while announcing an appellate interiority.

Two penetrable cyclopean walls converge in an improbable vault. As the roots of a hanging

garden, a sensitive spatiality is sensed, which grows from that specific ground in search of the

sky. In the limit of memory, space and light are caved, and with it, the thickness of time.

Freely projected from spaces of centrality, designing a precise space.

The history of the city could be told through its own relation with the river. The evolution of the

city urban form adapts itself to construction and public space molds, which alternates between

the longitudinality parallel to the river, and the transversality perpendicular to it. On this

proposal, interests are in favor spatiality to the detriment of form. In the project the

architectonic shape is a kind of temporal reminiscence of the cultural memory of the city. At

the boundary of the memory, space and light, and with it, time, are excavated. More than a

mimesis of the formal system of the harbor warehouses from the beginning of the past

century, interests the contemporary interpretation that goes from the system character of that

presence. Coming from a legacy more cultural than tactile, the new perpendicular architecture

is caved, pierced, delimited, defining a spatiality and temporality that contain some of the

diverse spheres which travel between a 'ship-city', strongly fictitious, and the real city. PFAMA

The initial gesture was designed by history. The city's remote history, or the history of this

land, wrested from the water, decided that these bodies would be set perpendicular to the

river's edge, which embraces a square, a public space, an a mass of air that signifies the

building. The design is based on vertical elements: modulation, structure, infrastructure and

sunshading. The whole complex is resolved by this means. Variable profiles subtly shape a

gentle, continuous design in which the planes are insinuated delicately. A design that varies

with the changing light, shadows and shade. The viewer's perspective also makes it seem

prominent or flatter, more opaque and mysterious, or more transparent and revealing of the

life that throbs inside. This gesture resolves the project, protecting the work-spaces on the

vertical plane with patios, and installing the public functions in the horizontal space.

The project meets the main needs within this area: protecting the Botanical Garden, urban

links between the lower and upper levels of the city, and making use of the space within the

Parque Mayer as having regeneration potential for the area. The wooded area goes from the

garden to the rough wall of the built-up boundary. The projected garden area covers the

resulting spaces under the large, continuous planes that mould the platform to the upper level.

It continues as a concept, this new green surface: it is open, permeable to streets and

squares, crossed within and open to the sky. This fabric of pedestrian public space links the

varying levels and surroundings in this area. The Capitol is re-centered within a new square,

where all routes meet. Within the paradigm of the historic city, a dense occupation of the

ground and low altitude, the solution etches out urban public spaces as key players in city life,

on a scale appropriate to its center.

The building is organized around a system composed of double height voids, open patios and

terraces through which southern light penetrates into it and help to organized the different

levels. Functional flexibility required by the proposed program is obtained by the neat spacial

organization of the building, the projected access system and the establishment of a rigorous

structural modulation. A peaceful appearance contrasts with interiors treated in a much more

dynamic way, understanding that the virtue of these spaces might lay on its ability to let itself

be occupied by the countless temporary users that may come to visit the center.

The thesis of this Final Project is abstract: to suppose that, there where nowadays and back

in the 16th Century is a convent building, exists the emptiness. There is then the

extraordinary opportunity of creating a new architecture at the historical center, keeping the

current function of High School. The location is interesting both from the historical point of

view (on the inner boundary of the layout of the old city wall), and from the contemporary

point of view. Thus, the proposed building raises from the floor, letting the public space to flow

at ground level, allowing the city to extend itself beyond the limits given by the city lines. The

program is divided in order to offer a semi-basement open to the city, with its sports and

cultural facilities, focusing the academic spaces on the privacy of the upper levels. The school

is organized within a system of patios and corridors that both illuminate and isolate the

classrooms from the exterior. The façade is thought based in reinforced concrete self-bearing

elements that create a scale and a rhythm that respond to the importance of the context. PFETSAV
