To this end, the general education courses promote learning in broad areas of human knowledge leading to an understanding of historical, social, and scientific phenomena as well as ethical perspectives. The professionally oriented courses promote learning that emphasizes evidence-based practice, including the latest research and clinical expertise of practitioners, quality improvement approaches, and the use of information technology.

Liberal education concepts and theories found in general education courses, along with professionally oriented courses in a student’s major, support and facilitate the development of skills students need to competently function in life and work. These skills include information literacy, critical thinking, oral and written communication and interpersonal/team building.

CLINICAL ASSIGNMENTS POLICY:

1. Labouré College will provide assistance in securing appropriate clinical sites for students, but cannot guarantee the nature, timing or location of any particular placement. Students are responsible for their own costs and arrangements for relocation or other adjustments in their personal and professional lives that may occur in connection with clinical placements.

2. Concurrent with each professional course, students must participate in clinical education at a previously arranged site.

3. All activities required in clinical must be educational and students, whether compensated or not, must not be substituted for staff nor left alone with patients.

4. Students are expected to continue at the arranged site for the duration of the

program.

5. Exact days and times of clinical education will be arranged, by the student, prior to the start of the first day of class.

6. Semester breaks are the time for students to take vacations and refresh themselves. Excused absences will not be granted for vacations taken during any semester.

7. Continuous clinical attendance 2 weekdays per week is required for the duration of the program. Nights and weekend shifts are not an option.

8. First semester students must post clinical days, times and supervisors’ contact

information in EOL 1020.

9. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the clinical course instructor of any changes in clinical days or times throughout the program.

Page 11: NEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY (NDT) DEPARTMENT Online

11

10. Students must be in clinical a minimum of 16 hours per week (preferably two 8-hour days).

11. Students dismissed from a clinical site for any reason (inappropriate behavior,

violation of policies) will be not be permitted to continue in the program.

12. Students who choose not to return to a clinical site for any reason will not be able to meet requirements for program completion; under these circumstances withdrawal from the program may be required.

13. The College or NDT department are not responsible for securing (will not

secure) another clinical site if a student is dismissed or chooses to leave a site. If a student is not in clinical, meeting program requirements is not possible; this may necessitate withdrawal from the program.

14. While in clinical, students are expected to participate as part of that

department’s health care team.

15. Clinical affiliates function independently of the College. On rare occasion, the affiliate may notify the College of inability to accommodate an accepted student. The College will make every attempt to find another site. However, a new site cannot be guaranteed. The College is not responsible for costs incurred or delay in program completion.

Policy: Clinical Grading: On the first day of clinical, students must bring copies of all clinical forms and review with clinical supervisor(s). The “Operational Definition of Satisfactory Clinical Performance” form must be reviewed, signed by both student and supervisor, and then uploaded to Coursework in EOL 1020 as instructed. The student will be evaluated as satisfactory or unsatisfactory for each outcome. The student must demonstrate the ability to perform each clinical skill as outlined in the outcomes for that course. The student will also be required to demonstrate on-going

Page 12: NEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY (NDT) DEPARTMENT Online

12

consistency of performance in order to earn a passing grade for the course. Successful development of clinical skills is necessary to meet program outcomes. Successful is defined as demonstrating skills necessary for each competency as defined in the clinical packet. Unsuccessful is defined as an inability to demonstrate skills necessary for each competency as defined in the clinical packet. Procedures: The clinical instructor will evaluate the student on an on-going basis. The student must demonstrate ability to perform competencies as outlined, as well as demonstrate on-going consistency in performance. Lack of consistency and inability to meet competencies will be noted by the supervisor. A conference between student, supervisor and course instructor or Chair will be initiated. The student will maintain a clinical journal, documenting clinical experiences on the provided clinical activity forms. The student will be responsible for maintaining clinical evaluation and clinical activity forms and have them signed on a timely basis by the clinical supervisor. Incomplete outcomes and incomplete end of semester clinical form packets will result in an unsatisfactory status for the course. The student will be responsible for returning all completed and signed clinical activity forms to the course instructor at the end of the course.

HIPAA REGULATIONS & PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY Policy: All students are required to meet HIPPA and patient confidentiality requirements.

Page 13: NEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY (NDT) DEPARTMENT Online

13

Procedure:

1. Prior to or concurrent with the first-year professional courses, all students must participate in HIPAA training.

2. Students will take a brief quiz indicating their understanding of patient confidentiality.

3. Students will sign and submit a document indicating their participation in the training and agreement to respect patient confidentiality in all clinical facilities.

4. All information taken from a clinical facility must have prior approval from the Chief Technologist of that clinical site or their designee (i.e. student liaison, educational coordinator).

5. All information must be de-identified (no patient names should appear on any file including when saving information to a disk).

6. HIPAA regulations as they relate to patient confidentiality will always be observed.

7. Students will respect the college policy on academic behavior, found in the college catalog on the website. This policy implies the observation of patient confidentiality.

than three clinical days during one semester, he/she may be unable to reach the clinical and program outcomes.

Page 16: NEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY (NDT) DEPARTMENT Online

16

PROCEDURES: 1. Being tardy three times will necessitate a student/faculty conference to assess

student progress. Faculty will initiate the conference and determine if continuation in course is possible.

2. Faculty will notify department chair of decision. 3. In the event of extenuating circumstances, it is the student’s responsibility to call the clinical facility indicating expected time of arrival, so that patient scheduling will not be interrupted. DISMISSAL OR TERMINATION (STUDENT-INITIATED) FROM CLINICAL FOR ANY REASON WILL NECESSITATE WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PROGRAM.

for make-up time. 5. Such arrangements must be made immediately after absence and carried out

within two weeks of missed time.

Page 17: NEURODIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGY (NDT) DEPARTMENT Online

17

6. The Department Chair must be notified, in writing, (e-mail required) by the

student of all arrangements made (date, time etc. of make-up).

7. The Chairperson will respond to the student, in writing via e-mail, providing documentation that the student has permission to be in the clinical on a non- assigned day and time.

8. The student will call the clinical supervisor, no later than 7:00 a.m. (or by time

required by clinical) on the day of an absence.

9. The student will email the Chairperson, no later than 8:00 a.m. on the day of an absence.
