The Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre), locat-ed in Paris, is a historic monument, and a national museum of France. It is a central landmark, locat-ed on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st ar-rondissement (neighbour-hood). Nearly 35,000 objects from the 6th millennium BC to the 19th century AD are exhibited over an area of 60,600 square me-tres (652,300 square feet). The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace (Pal-ais du Louvre) which be-gan as a fortress built in the 12th century under Philip II. Remnants of the fortress are still visible. The building was extend-ed many times to form the present Louvre Palace. In 1674, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leav-ing the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum, to display the nation’s mas-terpieces.The museum opened on 10

August 1793 with an ex-hibition of 537 paintings, the majority of the works being confiscated church and royal property. Be-cause of structural prob-lems with the building, the museum was closed in 1796 until 1801. The size of the collection increased under Napoleon when the museum was renamed the Musée Napoléon. After his defeat at Waterloo, many works seized by Napoleon’s armies were returned to their original owners. The collection was further in-creased during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, and during the Sec-ond Empire the museum gained 20,000 pieces. Hold-ings have grown steadi-ly through donations and gifts since the Third Re-public, except during the two World Wars. As of 2008, the collection is di-vided among eight curato-rial departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etrus-can, and Roman Antiqui-ties; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; and Prints and Drawings.

Musée d’OrsayThe Musée d’Orsay is a museum in Par-is, France, on the left bank of the Seine, housed in the former railway station, the Gare d’Orsay. It holds main-ly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furni-ture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by such painters such as Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Cezanne. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum’s opening in 1986.

Galerie LafayetteMain dome of the Galeries Lafayette department store in ParisIn 1893 Théophile Bader and his cousin Alphonse Kahn opened a fashion store in a small haberdasher’s shop at the corner of rue La Fayette and the Chaussée d’Antin, Paris. In 1896, the company purchased the entire building at n°1 rue La Fayette and in 1905 the buildings at n°38, 40 et 42, boulevard Haussmann and n°15 rue de la Chaussée d’Antin.Théophile Bader commissioned Georges Chedanne and then his pupil Ferdinand Chanut to design the layout of the Haussmann location. A glass and steel dome, and Art Nouveau staircases were built in 1912.

La Sainte-ChapelleThe Sainte-Chapelle, the palatine cha-pel in the courtyard of the royal pal-ace on the Ile de la Cite, was built to house precious relics: Christ’s crown of thorns, the Image of Edessa and thirty other relics of Christ that had been in the possession of Louis IX since August 1239, when it arrived from Venice in the hands of two Dominican friars. Unlike many devout aristocrats, who swiped relics, the saintly Louis bought his pre-cious relics of the Passion, purchased from the Latin emperor at Constanti-nople, Baldwin II, for the exorbitant sum of 135,000 livres, which was paid to the Venetians, to whom it had been pawned. The entire chapel, by contrast, cost 40,000 livres to build and until it was complete the relics were housed at cha-pels at the Chateau de Vincennes and a specially-built chapel at the Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. In 1241 a piece of the True Cross was added, and other relics. Thus the building in Paris, con-secrated 26 April 1248, was like a pre-cious reliquary: even the stonework was painted, with medallions of saints and martyrs in the quatrefoils of the dado arcade, which was hung with rich tex-tiles.

they say that a photographer's portfolio is like a deep dig into their soul, into their subconsciousness.Sarah is a photographer of character and she is not to be left unseen. She might find it impossible to use words to describe her photographs but her photographs speak loud

about her persona, a silent crescendo of feelings. Sarah knows about photography and plays constantly intriguing games with black and white . Effortlessly. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, she discovered her keen eye for beauty in photography along with events of great impact on her life, events that related her passion to feelings of loss and life. Her portraits are protagonists of modern drama and her darkness, delightful and inspirational, exposes deep feelings. She is inspired by life and her children and through her lens she communicates her passionate mind. Shadows, light, mystery and genuine talent mixed with techniques of high contrast, noir atmosphere and pure life.

After my studies in Greece as stylist and footwear designer I came in the UK for postgraduate studies at University of Arts London. My MA Final collection is inspired by Ancient

Greek Civilization and, at the same time, its construction is taken from ancient Greek footwear methodologies. My primary research includes ancient documents, historical references, sculptures, murals and few other sources. Trying to 'translate' extinct techniques from the soldiers' flat shoes to contemporary footwear manufacture and high heel shoes was a high-standard motivation for me, which achieved through research, experiments and innovative changes at the basic traditional footwear methodologies / techniques. The collection title ''UpSide Down'' defines , literally and also metaphoric, the irregularity of the designing / closing / making process .My studio development probably could be lead to wearable shoes and different approaches at footwear methodologies and this may be my next challenge/ project. Additionally, a key element of the collection development, was the Colors, which their combinations could possibly affect our mood in a positive way, as it was stated at my dissertation survey that has been responded by more than 550 women .

Part of my collection is showcased at Virtual Show Museum( http://www.virtualshoemuseum.com/valentini-argyropoulou )an innovative platform for Footwear Designers who create something 'more than a shoe'.

I have always had a love of art, back as far as I can remember, to my early school days. I was never an academic student and had an art teacher who neither nurtured or encouraged me, which just made me more determined to succeed in two ways; first, to show that I could produce work of a good

standard (which I managed by obtaining an ‘A’ in my finals) and secondly to teach Art by encouragement & understanding – to try and ensure that other people did not fall victim to short sightedness in a creative education. As I was no more an academic at the end of my school days than I was at the start, I did not possess the necessary overall grades to pass through to university. Back in the 80’s university really was for the privileged few, and so I stumbled immediately at my teaching hurdle, and ended up in an office job. This continued for many years until some small financial stability meant I had the opportunity to change my career to a creative one – to start producing art in the form of designing hand painted house signs. I took the plunge and left my full time paid employment to follow the chance to get back into the art world I loved. As a part of this new venture, I found a market to sell pet portraits, and I ended up staging demonstrations at Art and Craft shows in the south of England. People started to approach me about tuition, and finally, I got the satisfaction of teaching, albeit outside the academic system.Back in 2008, together with my husband, we decided on a full lifestyle change. We headed to Crete – our favourite ‘homely’ place within our favourite country of Greece – along with all our belongings we settled in our favourite town on the south west of the island, called Paleochora. As an artist I find the inspiration here is endless and the need to create artwork grows greater every day. I spend my time between my two favourite pastimes – creating art, and teaching art.I display my artwork at local venues each summer in Paleochora and I am also one of 5 local artists & sculptors that formed a committee to create the ‘Paleochora Art Week’. This is a cultural experience for the whole town – set up in and around the bars & tavernas – and now takes place in September each year.My art courses and day workshops are available through my website www.paintpaleochora.com

Page 64: Neu Tymes Vol43

My Empty Phantom is the moniker of one man band and multi instrumentalist Jesse Beaman from

Austin,Texas. He plays various instruments on stage Piano, Guitar, Drums with looping pedals. My Empty Phantom is described as classical rock, experimental, avant-garde, progressive and ambient. You could say it's a multiple genre fusion to create “Visual Rock”. Jesse has performed in the States, Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, Spain , Netherlands, England & Scotland. He has also shared the stage with musicians/ bands such as Cocorosie, Silver Mt Zion, Dosh, White Denim, Efterklang, Joan of Arc, Maserati, Julianna Barwick and This Will Destroy You.Well I know I have raised your eye brows and opened up your ears. Beaman once quoted “"Lately I've been thinking a song never has to be finished.

Especially since recordings can easily be changed and always redone. I like the idea of an album never really comes to an end”. Jesse Beaman is an artist with a full on international audience and he isn't in that traditional album making spot. Its sort of like a never ending live performance. So here at NeuTymes we found him and talked about his creativity goals and inspirations! Such talent on PIN music (Pretty in Noise) label. You can get on bandcamp and enjoy his latest EP “Red Giant”. Music can speak louder than words. In this case its a kaleidoscope collage with beautiful thus dramatic soundscapes that progresses in your soul as you move around them in your natural state of mind. You just think your floating with a band but its all in the faith of a one mans lion heart full of power and passion.

Page 65: Neu Tymes Vol43

Hello Jesse, 6250 miles divide us, but that's the great thing about internet. You can talk about music over a virtual coffee. So tell us more about your artistic name "My Empty Phantom". How did it come up and was it planned to be a one man show of yours over the years?

I came up with the name a long time ago.I guess at the time I felt like I didn't have much direction in my life. Feeling lost and empty.I didn't plan on keeping it a one man project this long. I'm hoping to get some musicians to join me in the near future.

You've got your own kind of Paradox working. You have just released your last EP online, sell material after your live sets and you have toured all over the place (Europe & USA) . Other bands or musicians need twice the time span to make things happen! Lucky star, hard work and an open heart? Tell us a bit about your music evolution…

I feel lucky but I've worked very hard and sacrificed a lot to get where I am now. It's been exciting. Also, people have put in a lot of work to get me to these places. I'm very thankful for all the support.

I recently found out on your facebook page that you were playing with fantastic Julianna Barwick! Are you friends? What have you gained with music friendships over the years, from touring ,sharing the stage or just ex changing views.

I've been lucky enough to play shows with bands/musicians that I already love their music.Julianna was one of those. We became friends through our music cause we've done three shows together now.Hopefully not the last. She makes beautiful music.I think performing with all the great bands really helps me see music differently and inspires me to keep being creative.

I believe you transform on stage and your album is another aspect of that emotion you hold. As you have once said "the song never has to be finished" i really admire your point of view. What is music to you. Could you imagine yourself doing something else?

Music has become such a big part of my life the last few years. Music to me is a way for me to speak up and express myself. It's everything I've been through and everything I'm going through.I like to imagine myself doing film scores someday. I also would like to own a music venue eventually.Outside of the music world I see myself painting, growing food, and traveling.

Tell us a bit about your art projects caressing the music you make. Any other hobbys that you enjoy?

I've been painting since I was sixteen years old. I painted much more a few years ago but I still love it.I've always wanted to do a music project to go with my paintings…maybe someday.I'd say creating music, art, and photography are my only hobbies right now.Everything I do besides that is just stuff like long walks, bike rides, going to movies, going to concerts, hanging out with friends or hanging out at home. Some things I'd like to take up is getting really great at cooking and building things with wood.

What 3 things come to your mind when the word Greece comes up? Same goes for some Greek music. Are you aware of any bands or artists? Or will we meet up on the next European tour and go crate diggin!

I don't know too many musicians/bands from Greece. I'm sure there are good ones! When I think of Greece I think of Greek Mythology, The Olympics, and the sea.

What albums have you been listening to the past week? and what was your fav 2013 release?

I've been getting into the album Collections by Teebs. Also I've been listening to the Jon Brion songs from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Soundtrack.Favorite album of 2013…hard to say but I'll say Efterklang's album Piramida.

What are your plans for the future Jesse? I wish you all the best and hope to see you soon in Greece, (something is coming up in May?

I'm working on a new record that should be out for spring/summer.I have a month long Europe tour coming up for all of May!

Any last thoughts. Before the line closes..... lots of love back!

Can't wait to perform in Greece. See you all soon! Thank you!

George MastrokostasAbsent Without Leave

Page 69: Neu Tymes Vol43

The concept of Faded Pho-tographs remixes is not only a minimal dejavu. Its a new road trip, an endeavor within your own memories of

a life times beauty that never fails upon you. George Mastrokostas is Absent Without Leave, from Ath-ens. He travels us through all these different bus stops of electronica, post-electronica , alternative, ambi-ent, post-rock and shoe gaze in this case with the help of friends from the past to the future. A one man solo project has been revitalized with the help of: Dalot, (ghost), Reigns, Aerosol, Ruxpin, Sun Glitters, Eleventhfloorrecords, Subtrac-tiveLAD, Ghost Bike, Landing, Arc Lab, Kontakte, The Echelon Ef-fect, Dedo, Elika, Oppressed By The Line, Dreissk, Plastik Joy, Keef Baker, Crisopa, Dankerque (Giardini Di Mirò’s Jukka Rever-beri & Con_Cetta), Slow Dancing Society, To Destroy A City, Midas Fall, Mark Harris, Olan Mill, Ex Confusion, Tokyo Bloodworm. You can imagine that every time you trav-el through a track it differs again in concept and sentimental act. Although the whole project of a double CD is an aura of bliss into a maze of mu-sical stardust. All you really need is moments you can feel free to jump in the star-dome. Take your time and experiment with the different puls-es of a Polaroid universe. This view-master will never say "fin" for you.

Page 70: Neu Tymes Vol43

It will keep on playing until the infinite warmth. Lights on though, I think you should start reading about this project in depth. As George kindly shared his thoughts with us. I'll finish off with a David Lynch quote "Music deals with time and timing. It's so magical..." so get rid of your watch on a cozy day or night and dive into your own musical cinema of faded photography....

The phrase "Absent without leave" was first captured in Mr. Rushworth's Historical Collections, Volume VI, 1646 to 1648, as a military US acronym. I’ve always imagined that your artistic name has nothing to do with it. Rather the opposite. A heartfelt stand alone from reality but always into the feeling of the moment. How did you come up with your alter-ego nickname?

Ι chose the name Absent Without Leave because I liked it in general as an expression and therefore I don’t want to give a particular interpretation to it, although at times I have heard many different interpretations. I like it when everybody, (just like you did), just by listening to it can make up a different story around it.

So George, our first contact with the album "Faded Photographs" was in 2010 out on your own label Sound in Silence. You return in late 2013 with a remix concept again on SIS. Some artists choose to go straight forward to the next album. Why did you decide to make a new

approach on your past work? The truth is that after the "Faded Photographs" I did another release with new material. This was the "Neath The Tumbling Stars EP" which was released in mid 2011 by the Swiss Three: Four Records, exclusively on 12” vinyl. I was thinking about a new approach on the material of my last completed album Faded Photographs long enough, imagining how the feeling of the tracks on the album could be interpreted by some artists whom I admired and I would have liked them to participate so we could work together.

How did this project come to life? The timing, the funding, the process...More than two and a half hours of musical bliss and 28 artists we love, respect and admire are ft in your new album "Faded Photographs Remixes".

The project with the remix album began in 2012 when I first approached some artists who I did like for them to make a remix on the original songs of the album. Almost all of them responded immediately and positively while later on there were still some of them who asked me themselves to participate by making a remix. So finally after some time I had already gathered enough remixes and that’s why the release

Page 71: Neu Tymes Vol43

had to be on a double CD format. I decided to fund this album myself just as the "Faded Photographs" so it got released on Sound in Silence. By these means, I had the personal editing and final sound and aesthetics in my own hands.

You must be a very happy man for having such great collaborations by your side (all these years)! Were all these friendships from tours, in and out of Greece or new approaches? So many like-minded visionary artists in one place!

I am very happy indeed and I think it is honorable that all these years I have worked with some of the most important names in the world of the music scene I represent either it's in concert by sharing the same stage with 65daysofstatic, God Is An Astronaut , I Like Trains, Piano Magic, Arms And Sleepers, Manyfingers etc. , or in discography such as Port-Royal, Stafraenn Hakon, Epic45, Yellow6, Richard Adams (Hood) etc. So in Faded Photographs Remixes great artists are also involved such as Landing, Slow Dancing Society, Sun Glitters, Midas Fall, Ruxpin, SubtractiveLAD, Reigns, Kontakte, Keef Baker and too many others. With most of them we have developed for years now a

more personal friendship, with others we have done live performances together, while there are a few of them that we have only communicated via internet for some time without having the chance to meet in person. However with all of them we have something that unites us, such as the common aesthetic that we have in terms of music and beyond.

What does the internet do for you as for "face-to-face" these days. Speaking always on a making music basis.

The internet nowadays is a substantial assistance for music composition and in its promotion. For example, it is now much easier to collaborate between musicians who are far away from each other, even in a different continent, by only file sharing sounds. Also, each musician can spread the work around the world through various music sites, but also you can come into direct contact with both audience and with various companies, promoters, magazines, radios, etc.

Some tracks are remixed more than once, was it your choice? Did you have a vision how to hand out songs?

From the beginning I wanted each piece to have more than one versions and I already had in my mind which artists I would like to work on a

Page 72: Neu Tymes Vol43

particular track. To me the word remix ignites my soul into new paths that are always full-filled with pleasures of the original song. What does the word remix stand for you? As for your album.

The remix for me is a new approach on an existing piece. Anyone who makes a remix gives a new dimension to the piece, adding his own elements on the original. So in a way there is a collaboration between the remixer and the composer of the original song. I believe the remixers worked in the same way on my album. Everybody put their personal imprint on the initial ideas, making the track to fly in new, but equally beautiful trails.

You have a diy approach in your work aesthetics. You obviously enjoy getting your hands on everything and it becomes more personal for your listener. I'd be fascinated to hear about your passion of photography and how you make the handcrafting, blend all together.

Most of my work has been releasesd by independent labels around the world , as Unlabel ( England ), Distant Noise Records ( England ), Awkward Silence Recordings ( England ), Chat Blanc Records ( Canada ), Thisquietarmy Records ( Canada ), Three: Four Records ( Switzerland ), Duotone Records ( Japan ), Bsbta ( Denmark ), Fuzzy Panda Recording Co. (USA ),

etc.All these companies have a diy aesthetic and that was was one of the main reasons I worked with them in the first place.Beyond these , however, I've done some releases on my own label Sound In Silence, which have a complete diy approach. In these releases the aesthetic part is up to me , i make the packaging and care about the whole artwork. I love how each packaging is handcrafted and thus so special in its own way. I think the artwork of each release is equally important as for the music and how these two together bind and create a unified work of music . So I prefer the photos of the covers to be printed on real photograph paper and to be glued on the packaging and I always use photos I have taken myself, that my girlfriend has or a friend of mine . Also , the packaging is usually made out of recycled cardboard and the inserts are often made out of specific paper quality. Finally , the handcraft style is completed with the use of seals and each copy is i n dividually numbered, maki n g it so special for every listener .

Feedback. Is always important to make us grow into the future. Evolve . Can you remember a moment from your fans that really filled you up with a glow?

Each response and criticism from the publi c , either positive or ne g ative, is welcome and he l ps me to evolve and imp r ove. I can remember several times when I felt joy and satisfaction after a live, l istening to someone telling me that my music means a lot to them or reading messages via the internet, telling me that my music has accompanied them in some very special personal moments.

What is your pattern in making music? Some need traveling others want dark roads....

There is no specific pattern in which I write music. You may be inspired both by good moments, such as a trip, a beautiful landscape or a good movie, and some more difficult situations like a personal problem, a loss, etc.

What album did you enjoy listening to, this week? Do you hunt down new releases, dive into the past or whatever you come across?

What I heard in the past few days was the The Lighthouse Project of Amiina. Generally I love to dig into new releases and discover new beautiful music, but occasionally I return to older releases that

I consider timeless.Any comments on the Greek Music Scene these days? Has the crisis affected the alternative scene? We can enjoy your music on BBC 6 and Resonance fm but something is going wrong here with the media market. What do you think about the Greek independent radio stations that are growing more and more lately?

The Greek music scene nowadays still continues to have meritorious releases, just as it did in the previous decades . I don't think the so-called "crisis" has affected the alternative scene , as there are still too many artists/bands , which indeed keep growing, some very good albums are coming out, and there are many lives on a daily basis. The problem of the alternative scene in our country is that it appeals to a very limited audience and thus it cannot have the promotion it deserves from the Media. It's an oxymoron that someone can hear my music from a large radio station abroad , such as the BBC 6, but can't hear it from Greek stations . Fortunately nowadays the radio landscape has begun to change with the growth of more Internet radio stations . In the recent years many new Internet-based radio stations have been created , that are really independent

Page 75: Neu Tymes Vol43

, without being manipulated from multinational companies , playlists etc., and can support the Greek alternative scene .

Where can our readers find your album? I believe it goes worldwide on some fantastic labels.

The Faded Photographs Remixes in Greece is currently available only from my page on bandcamp, which is www.absentwithoutleave.bandcamp.com , while abroad its available in Europe, America and Asia, through major distributors and record stores such as Rough Trade Records, Norman Records, Tower Records, Linus Records, n5md etc.

You have made music for the short film "Crossroads" (Petros Sofikitis). Will we listen to future cinematic soundcsapes? In this case, do you go through your same making music guidelines or is it a different process you enjoy?

In the future I would be very interested to deal with the world of soundtracks, but at the present time being there is no agreement with any such sort of cooperation. My music contains many cinematic elements, creating images for the listener, and overall I still love combining music with images at my live performances. The process of music composition for a film differs , the inspiration is based on a project that you

are given and there are some restrictions, such as the du-ration etc.

Any plans for the future? Upcoming events or new work coming out? We wish you all the best!

There are some discussions about possible lives during Spring in Athens, Thessalon-iki and maybe to some othe-er cities but at the present there is nothing certain to announce. Also in the up-coming months I plan to record some new songs and maybe toward the end of the year or early next year release a new album. Thank you for your good wishes and your support especially.

In the end, what is Music... instant photographs? Fading and Re Fading?

Music is above all, an ex-pression and way of com-munication. Once a musical track is composed it reflects the feelings of its creator, just like a photo captures a particular moment. When time passes by, even a faded photograph can somehow stimulate the imagination of what one sees, making him create his own story about it. I believe that’s how music works in the exact same way. Listening to a track all people can create their own images and travel through them.
