Saturday Morningwith Speaking in ColourFor these group activities you will make your choice at the venue after registration – each of the activities can take up to 60 people and it is recommended that if there is more than one person from a service attending the retreat that you go to difference activities.

A: ABORIGINAL DANCE: Educators get to learn about Aboriginal dance: the when, why and how and differed regionally. Willing participants will have the opportunity to learn a few moves and a local dance with empathise now how Aboriginal people would use dance as a way to communicate stories regionally. Those brave enough will also get the opportunity to have their hands painted in ochre!

B: WEAVING: Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the significance and place for traditional weaving in the NSW and ACT regions. Participants will learn two contemporary techniques they can take back to their service to share with the children.

C: ABORIGINAL ART APPRECIATION: Participants will learn about Aboriginal art, the differences regional and most importantly how to be inspired by tradition to create something contemporary. Participants will have the opportunity to try a few different activities, all of which they can take back to their services.

These activities have an OOSH focus. Speaking in Colour will teach you content you are able to share with the children at your service.

There will be 2 workshop sessions on Saturday:SESSION A – 12.00 PM TO 1.15PM

A:1 Tribal Council - Participation & CollaborationAn opportunity for educators to meet and share their stories of success and challenge in their work with children and families around the areas of participation and collaboration. The Council will explore these stories in the context of research by Harry Shier and Roger Hart.

A:2 Managing the Politics of Tricky PersonalitiesA grumpy boss, whiny colleague or a difficult parent: all recognisable characters from our everyday work in OOSH. Dealing with difficult and challenging moments is part of life. It is how we react to them that is important and can often lead to the outcomes we want. In this taster session using some quirky tools participants will be given a deeper understanding of all types of human behaviour and the best approach to take… If you are having difficulties with another human being, then this is the session for you… Importantly, this session will help you to understand and appreciate what a difficult person might be able to teach us, and become aware of our your own shortcomings in our dealings with others.

A:3 Play! Fertiliser for a Growing BrainDid you know that when you laugh, five centres of the brain light up? Come and find out more amazing facts about children’s brains and how they work. We will also explore play as a tool to build powerful brains!

A:4 Understanding Trauma, Development & BehavioursHow can knowledge of trauma-informed practice help us to support the children we work with? In many situations children are coming to OSHC with a trauma history. Research proves that trauma affects brain development, attachment and day-to-day functioning. This then impacts on the way a child interacts within their environment, the way they communicate and function. Our reaction to the way individual children act and react when triggered by their trauma determines what happens next.

A:5 Treasure Hunts & Eco MapsSam Crosby from the Centennial Parkland’s/Botanic Gardens Education team will show you how to set up treasure hunt activities and eco map making with kids who have a sense of adventure. These activities will introduce animal tracking and basic navigation as nature engagement concepts and as a method of creative learning and problem solving. This workshop will be located outside utilising the natural bushland around the resort and will go ahead even in bad weather so bring walking shoes and wet weather gear.

B:1 Tribal Council - Managing Crisis Situations in Services

The key to survival is preparation and planning.

B:2 Managing the Politics of Tricky PersonalitiesA grumpy boss, whiny colleague or a difficult parent: all recognisable characters from our everyday work in OOSH. Dealing with difficult and challenging moments is part of life. It is how we react to them that is important and can often lead to the outcomes we want.

B:5 Developing Engaging Outdoor Play SpacesDuring this workshop you will learn about play space design, play affordances and the use of loose natural pars to create permanent or temporary nature play spaces in any location. SESSION C – SUNDAY 9:00AM TO 10:15AM

C:1 Whose Problem Is It?Well let’s find out! Join is for some interactive problem solving on common and uncommon issues in services. Develop your skills to trouble shoot problems before they turn into a crisis. Essential skills for every educator!

C:2 Play, Passion, and Playfulness Playfulness is an essential part of play. Embracing play in OOSH means accepting some chaos and mayhem. Much of what passes for play in our current society is devoid of playfulness. Playfulness is an important factor in building relationships with children both formal and informal and can ultimately impact children’s daily experiences and have a direct impact on their lives. Even our own play experiences can affect our own playfulness!!! This presentation explores play to passion to playfulness and its implications in OOSH.

C:3 Tribal Council - Educational LeadershipAn opportunity for educational leaders to meet and share ideas and strategies that they are utilising in their roles as educational leaders. Time to review and explore how educational leadership is displayed in your service

SUNDAY 10:45AM

Symposiums - designed to challenge common understandings and empower educators to think differently about their work.

1. Unpacking the Dark Side of PlayThis symposium will challenge educators to think differently about children’s play - the rituals, the traditions, the role-play and the macabre.
