LTE-Advanced: what it is and what it is not

ByPamela Garcia

Marketing Engineer

First off, why should I spend the next 5 minutes reading this article?LTE-A is the natural upgrade path for carriers with GSM/UMTS networks and is anticipated to become the first truly global mobile phone standard.

We market ourselves as offering scalable end-to-end solutions, products and services catering to service providers’ ever-increasing requirement for capacity, coverage and competitive edge. We often say that we can help potential clients build new competences to maintain relevance in the more open and aggressive industry (source: 3wnetworks.com). It comes with the territory that we should keep ourselves abreast with the latest trends in the telecom industry.

What is LTE-Advanced?

LTE-Advanced is a standard for wireless mobile communications supporting 1 Gbps download data rates and higher cell throughput and lower cost per bit as compared to LTE Release 8. It was developed by 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and is based on GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies.

LTE Release 8 LTE-Advanced

Peak data rate DL: 100 Mbps, UL: 50 Mbps DL: 1 Gbps, UL: 500 Mbps

Transmission bandwidth wider by approximately 70 MHz in DL and 40 MHz in UL

Latency

Peak spectrum efficiency

Capacity

<100 ms

DL: 3 to 4 times Release 6 HSDPA, UL: 2 to 3 times Release 6 Enhanced Uplink

200 active users in 5 MHz bandwidth

<50 ms

DL: 30 bps/Hz, UL: 15 bps/Hz

300 active users in 5 MHz bandwidth

What are the key benefits of LTE-A?

Optimized heterogeneous networks

Small cells such as pico and femtocells bring the network closer to users and greatly improve performance. LTE-A brings more out of small cells by using range expansion, which increases the utilization of small cells to increase overall network capacity.

Very high data rates for all users

Simply adding small cells to a network only benefits users close to those cells. But LTE-A enhances the experience for all users with higher data rates, even when the small cells are not positioned in optimal locations. This ensures user fairness. Added to that, advanced receivers allow devices to discover small cells early and further increase performance of range expansion.

Flexible resource allocation

Network load is inherently uneven, continuously changing with time and location. The adaptive interference management feature of LTE-A dynamically allocates resources between the macrocells and small cells to balance network load, enabling more simultaneous users per cell.

Carrier aggregation of contiguous and non-contiguous spectrum allocations

LTE-A can aggregate up to 5 carriers (up to 100 MHz) to increase user data rates and capacity for busty applications such as web browsing. Aggregation (multicarrier) when combined with higher order MIMO can provide extremely high peak data rates, theoretically up to 1Gbps.

Is it technically correct to call it “4G LTE”?LTE Release 8 was often seen as 4G standard which is not true for the simple reason that LTE does not fulfill all requirements of ITU 4G definition. 3.9G is more acceptable for LTE.

In the feasibility study for LTE-A, the results of which are published in Technical Report (TR) 36.912, 3GPP determined that LTE-A would meet the ITU-R requirements for IMT-Advanced or 4G, which include:

Seamless global interoperability and intersystem handovers• Enhanced peak data rates of up to ≈ 100 Mbit/s for high mobility and ≈ 1 Gbit/s for low mobility• All-IP packet switched network• Dynamic sharing and use of network resources• Scalable channel bandwidth of 5–20 MHz, optionally up to 40 MHz• Peak link spectral efficiency of 15 bit/s/Hz in the downlink and 6.75 bit/s/Hz in the uplink• System spectral efficiency of up to 3 bit/s/Hz/cell in the downlink and 2.25 bit/s/Hz/cell for indoor usage• High quality multimedia support service•

For all intents and purposes, it is technically correct to call LTE-A as 4G LTE. In fact, in late 2009, it was formally submitted as a candidate 4G system to ITU-T and was subsequently approved into ITU IMT-Advanced and was finalized by 3GPP in March 2011.

Your Funniest Moment? During my studies in Canada, I offered my class fellow who wasn’t aware of the coffee chain “Second Cup” and was new in Canada “Hey, I have a “Second Cup” free coffee coupon for you” and he replied “Thanks Ghazi, but do I’ve to pay for the first cup?”. I still start laughing when I go to “Second Cup” because it reminds me of my friends and the student life when each dollar counts....

Your Happiest Moment? When I was blessed with my kids, a daughter and a son

If you had a choice of getting a superpower what would you want?

Power to convince superpowers of the world to focus on sharing the world resources amongst people without discrimination rather than wasting the resources on developing lethal weapons to monopolize the world resources. This will minimize the sufferings of the people worldwide.

Performance Beyond Expectations3W Networks and 3C websites are both live and running! I am very happy to say that both these sites have been totally designed and developed in house. Website development is not an easy task even for experienced people and when the website needs to be developed and designed by a beginner it can be a bit daunting.

This month the EOM goes to Pamela Garcia. Like they say, one man’s loss is another person’s gain. In this case, proposal’s loss is marketing’s gain! Pamela Garcia was working as a Proposal Engineer before she joined the Marketing team in Nov last year. In few months of being with the team, she has already developed 2 websites for the company completely from scratch. Both these websites are fresh, user friendly, have a very intuitive user interface and very structured content.

A lot of hard work and diligence has gone into the site development and I appreciate Pam’s proficiency in handling the tasks assigned to her. Well done Pam. Cheers!

I go to Thushara because ...

“We used to award staff based on how good they are and how they exceed our expectations. This month is different. It is not about one’s expertise but about what one can do to make a difference.

Thushara has shown that he is capable of doing something beyond his normal daily work by volunteering to perform a task outside his comfort zone, proving that he does not only care about his work but for the company meeting the target as well.

He asked a simple question that is worth recognition—“Sir, I am free. What can I do to help?” It is not easy for a person that performs office cleaning work to ask this question, especially if he does not know integration works, but he did anyway.

This is the kind of attitude that we hope will spread among us like wildfire. This is a perfect example of something worthy of recognition and of being awarded Mr. Whiskers.

I am Mr. Whiskers, the 3W Networks Core Values mascot

Two cops walk into a room with no windows

Solution to March’s riddle:The young racer’s mother is also a brain surgeon.

and find a dead man hanging from the ceiling. After a thorough investigation, they rule out murder. But, with nothing beneath the dead man (no chair, no table to jump off from) save a puddle of water, how could the man have committed suicide?

Answer to this riddle on next month’s issue

The Story of Unemployed Entrepreneur

An unemployed man applies for the position of a janitor at Microsoft. He is interviewed by the HR Chief and subjected to a battery of employment tests.

The HR Chief tells him: Congratulations, you got the job! Just give me your e-mail address so that I can send you an employment package and let you know when to start work.

The man is distraught. He has no choice but to tell the HR Chief that he has no computer and therefore no e-mail

The HR Chief tells him that, if he has no e-mail address, he virtually does not exist and therefore cannot hold a job.

The man leaves in a desperate mood.

He is down to his last $10 with no job in sight. He sees a supermarket and decides to buy a 10 lb box of strawberries.

He starts out making door to door calls, selling those strawberries by the pound. Within 2 hours, he manages to double his capital. He repeats the deal 3 times more and goes home with $60 in his pocket.

He comes to see that he can survive this way. He starts every day earlier and goes home later every day, tripling or quadrupling his money every day.

Before long, he buys a wheel barrow so he can buy and sell more strawberries. After a while, he is able to buy a truck and eventually becomes the owner of a fleet of delivery trucks with several employees working for him.

He adds other produce items to his deliveries. Five years go by.

The man is now the owner of one of the largest food chains in the United States.

He starts thinking about the future for him and his family and decides to buy some life insurance. He calls an agent and selects a good policy. The agent asks him for his e-mail address to send him a confirmation of the policy.

The man tells him that he doesn’t have an e-mail address! That is incredible, says the agent. You have no e-mail but you built this large empire! Can you imagine where you would be if you had an e-mail address?

The man briefly thinks and then answers: I WOULD BE A TOILET CLEANER AT MICROSOFT!

Moral 1 of the story: The internet does not solve all the problems in our lives!

Moral 2 of the story: When you have no e-mail but work hard, you can become a millionaire!

Moral 3 of the story: You received this story by e-mail. Therefore you are closer to cleaning toilets than to being a millionaire!
